The Rev. William Rutkowski, Vicar General for the Diocese of Saginaw, celebrated Respect Life Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption in Saginaw. Landstown wanted respect, and the Eagles got it Thursday night.
The No. 5 Eagles used a stifling defense that game-planned perfectly for Ocean Lakes’ read-option offense and got a huge game from quarterback Brent Stukes to upset the No. 2 Dolphins 26-23. The win helped Landstown stay unbeaten and take sole possession of first place in the Beach District.
The Eagles (6-0) held Ocean Lakes quarterback Xander Jedlick and running back Iniko Tauti in check all night. Jedlick came into the game with 884 total yards and 10 touchdowns. Tauti had rushed for 288 yards and four touchdowns in his past two games.
But neither was effective against Landstown.
Ocean Lakes (5-1) did score on its first possession when Jedlick threw a short pass to a wide open Jaevon Becton, who sprinted 33 yards for the touchdown.
But Landstown answered when Stukes hit White on a 9-yard touchdown pass. The Eagles missed the extra point and trailed 7-6.
That didn’t matter because Landstown scored again on its next possession. This time, running back Victor Jones scored on a 1-yard run to make it 13-7.
Landstown scored again at the end of the quarter when White intercepted Jedlick and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown and a 20-7 lead. Jones scored his second touchdown of the game on an 8-yard run to put the Eagles up 26-7 at the half.
The Dolphins didn’t give up. Jedlick threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Vinny Jarvis in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 26-15.
Ocean Lakes had other opportunities to get closer, but Landstown’s defense had two more interceptions by both of their starting cornerbacks.
The Dolphins made it interesting when Becton scored on a 4-yard run and made the two-point conversion to make it 26-23 with 1:47 left. But they wouldn’t get any closer. Ocean Lakes had no timeouts left so that’s all Landstown had to do was take a knee and the game was over. To be continued…
In conversations with members of local civil society and local authorities, in particular the
Culture Delegate and Inspector of Monuments and Sites, the so-called Portuguese
Church has frequently been cited as the final religious monument in danger of being lost
and requiring urgent attention. Interestingly, despite their diverse uses at the time, the
Simon Attia synagogue; the Portuguese Church; the recently renovated Sidi
Mohammed Ben Abdullah Museum; the French Consulate (now the Alliance Franco-
Marocaine d’Essaouira);and the Danish Consulate building (where renovation is about
to start with a view to the creation of a cultural centre) display a striking homology of
design, due to their construction at the height of the development of the Kasbah district
at the end of the 18th century as Essaouira gained prestige and standing as a trading
center.

We visited a Hindu Temple recently to hear a friend sing traditional songs from Southern India. We almost turned back at the door when we were told we had to remove our shoes/socks. It turned out to be a fun experience and I couldn't help but snap this corny shot.

Apparently this gentleman has mistaken the vendor for Smudgy The Cockney Bootblack.
Either that, or he works in the warehouse at Circuit City.
Whatever, judging by the gesture that the vendor is making it's easy to imagine that there's a lot more junk on display here than at any other vendor space at the flea...

Originally built as a Greek Revival office building about 1859, this Elizabeth City, North Carolina (Pasquotank County) building was converted about 1880 into an Italianate style structure. Here Dr. Palemon John (c 1827-1902) published his weekly newspaper, "The North Carolinian", published from 1869 to 1902. In addition to housing a newspaper, the building has served as "a piano store, music shop, marriage chapel law offices, and as a barbershop."** It was again a law office in 2018, the date of this photo. The sign at the bottom right of the structure memorializes the first account of the Wright Brothers aeronautical efforts. Quoting from the sign which quotes from the newspaper's August 1, 1901 edition: "If report is to be credited, there is building on an unfrequented part of Carolina's coast an air-ship . . . An Ohio inventor with two companions and fellow-workmen, it is stated, have located . . . near Nags Head . . . and have been there busied for sometime in the perfection of a machine with which they expect to solve the problem of aerial navigation." The sign also shows an illustration of the building circa 1871.

This commercial structure is a 2-story brick building with a wooden storefront. The eave has prominent brackets which are duplicated on the lower level storefront cornices Four 1/1 sash windows on the upper level accentuate the symmetry of the structure; the window caps are molded and the sills are of stone. In the center of the street level is a single-leaf wooden door with panels and a rectangular transom with 2 vertical panes. At each side of this entrance are wood doors with a single large glass. There are variations in the transoms, a feature that might indicate a later alteration. To the side of each of the glass doors is a large 4-pane display window. On the upper level cornice and in the storefront cornice is a course of ornamentation consisting of alternating circles and diamond shapes. The building is included in the Elizabeth City Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places, October 18, 1977 with reference number 77001007. The nomination form is found at files.nc.gov/ncdcr/nr/PK0003.pdf

As much as people seem to hate the sight of these, you really have to respect the guys keeping the roads fit for traffic. And there's absolutely no way I'd like to end up working in an asphalt crew during a heat wave. There have got to be far more pleasant ways of cooking oneself alive.
