Now here be a story:

Whilst transporting ones family to Tynemouth today (daughter #2 was going to a party) we spotted the inshore lifeboat racing through the torrent that was the North Sea. On arriving at Tynemouth two police cars headed in the same direction and I thought ah-hah, someone's in trouble. If the ambulance in hot pursuit didn't confirm my suspicions then the Marine Rescue Landrover certainly did. Anyway's more about that little drama later.

With a couple of hours to spare Mrs H and daughter #1 headed for the gifty shoppy places, I headed for the pier, pleased that i had the camera with me. I got quite a few shots of the waves crashing over the pier but with a maximum focal length of 105mm my angle of view was a bit too wide to really capture the drama. I did capture this shot of the waves crashing around the pier steps. As I was about to head off in search of other vantage points I noticed some dude had gone halfway down the steps and was posing for a photo when, you guessed it, a bloody huge wave came and gave him a right soaking. I reckon if he'd been at the bottom of the steps he could well have been swept off his feet.

Later, as I was heading back to the car, I stopped to talk to a gentleman who turned out to be a member of the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade. It transpired that the earlier drama was due to some idiot playing chicken with the waves at Whitley Bay. Luckily he was plucked out of the sea but his fate could have been much worse.

Before taking the above shot I spent a couple of minutes watching the waves and sussing out the extent of thier reach. All I had to cope with was a bit of sea spray. Respect the raging sea for it is more powerful than some folk imagine.

Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel, Egypt, 2012.

I'm always amazed at the history of our world. While we recognize the speed of change in our time, it's a relatively recent phenomenon. We have come so far in such a short time that we don't always see how we got here. And living in America, with such a relatively short history of civilization, everything seems new!

There are so many amazing sites around the world, but Egypt has the oldest man made monuments that I've ever seen. The Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel is an engineering marvel both when it was originally built and when it was saved from the building of the Aswan High Dam. The monument was carved into the side of a mountain and must have been an imposing site to travelers on the Nile. The High Dam would have submerged the monument under water, so the entire structure was cut into pieces and moved to higher ground to save it. Even now, you can barely see the cuts made when moving it.

Our collective history is the key to our future. We cannot dive into the future without a respect and understanding of our past.
