Photograph taken at an altitude of Fifty seven metres at 11:23am on an overcast morning on Friday 3rd March 2023, off Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.

Here we see an adult Female Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), a bird of prey belonging to the kestrel group of the falcon family Falconidae. It is also known as the European kestrel, Eurasian kestrel, Common Kestrel or Old World kestrel. In the United Kingdom, where no other kestrel species commonly occurs, it is generally just called "kestrel".

Female kestrels are an unremarkable shade of mid-brown, with their upper parts a richer shade than their breast and underparts. Their wingtips are darker brown than the rest of their bodies, and their tails are light brown, barred with darker, almost black banding. Female kestrels’ bodies are speckled all over with mottled darker markings.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Forty nine metres at 09:36am on Saturday 20th February 2021 off Blackheath Avenue and Charlton Way in the grounds of Greenwich Park, one of the Royal Parks of London situated in Greenwich, South East London.

Here we see, Sciurus Carolinensis (Eastern Gray Squirrel or Grey Squirrel), a tree squirrel native to North America and first introduced to the UK in the 1870's. Though it was largely responsible for the decimation of our own native red squirrel population, those are now on the increase and found in certain parts of the UK including Scotland. The Greys are still an ecologically essential natural forester regenerator.

May an old log beaten by wind and rain,

Grey from the long winter,

burnt at the base in late summer.

May an old log, washed ashore by tumbling waves.

Refuged by the ants and moths, Oh… so surrendered...

May an old log so forgotten today…

command respect for what it once was?!!!

Tunabreen is a glacier at Svalbard. It is about 23 kilometers long merges with Von Postbreen, and the combined glacier flows into Tempelfjorden. The area is part of the Sassen–Bünsow Land National Park

The foreground ice boulder was one of many on top of the fjord ice. The locals bring back ice for the cocktails here :-) The ice wall of the glacier is almost 30 meters / 100 feet tall.

Around 5000 years ago the average temperature in Svalbard was around 4 degrees warmer than today. Since then the landscape has cooled down creating better conditions for the growth of glaciers and permafrost. Therefore, many of Svalbard’s glaciers are around 3000-4000 years old.

Respecting one another takes us in the right direction. We all have our traditions and ways of life, which, if we choose to we can use to our benefit by learning from one another and appreciating and embracing our differences.

WAVE PLAY in FLAMBOROUGH…

Taken at Flamborough, this is up North, Yorkshire, the North-Sea, but no matter, a wave is a wave is a wave, where ever...

Always different and never-ending, they keep on rolling in.

I love them and can sit staring at them for hours.

Love the smell, the sound, the spectacle.

The wind was playing with the water, the sun was playing with the colours, the gulls were playing with wind and water in the sunlight.

Hope you have a lovely day and thank you for your comments, Magda, (*_*)

About World Photography Day

Many people that have mentioned that they’ve never heard of World Photography Day. Why is that? World Photography Day wasn’t ‘created’ by a big brand as a marketing tool. Rather, it’s a day where photographers had started to come together to celebrate photography, just because they could. Any excuse to throw a party right? Slowly, groups around the world have started to get on board with the idea of World Photography Day and you will find traces of World Photography Day being celebrated over the last 20 years or so. Each year, World Photography Day has gained momentum and this year, we’re hoping to bring photographers together once again with an even larger audience.

Why August 19th?

World Photography Day originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic processes developed by Louis Daguerre. On January 9, 1839, The French Academy of Sciences announced the daguerreotype process. A few months later, on August 19, 1839, the French government announced the invention as a gift “Free to the World.”

Another photographic processes, the Calotype, was also invented in 1839 by William Fox Talbot (it was announced in 1841). Together, the invention of both the Daguerreotype and Calotype mark 1839 as the year that photography was invented.

With deep respect for the Veterans who have stood between us and a deep abyss.

Currently 100% of our forces are volunteers. They are paid peanuts and their families struggle to make ends meet.

I was surprised to hear on the History Channel this morning that only 20% of the Viet Nam Vets were draftees. I would have thought the inverse from popular lore.

Above are photos of my dad, my two brothers and me. I am the cute baby on the bottom left. My dad with the Lyndon Johnson big ear is on the top left. My older brother is on the top right and I'm pretty sure he is gay - if he is not gay he is missing a good chance. (Just look at the necklace he is wearing.) My younger brother is giving the finger to the world on the bottom right - a trait that he continues to this day.

I thought about the significance of this day when I saw a goofy wall hanging my mom put together many years ago and gave me showing these 4 photos. My Mom and Dad are long gone, but I thought of my Mom carefully cutting photos into circles to place in the frame as a special gift for me. – I removed them to scan for this.

So, my thought is that all of the Vets were once babes in their mom’s arms. They are not statistics to be used by politicians of any stripe. Both sides suck in my opinion.

My dad and both of his brothers served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific. One of his brothers died in service. My mother’s only brother served in the Navy in WWII in the Atlantic. My brothers and I also served in the Navy.

My Father-in-Law served in North Africa and Italy.

Two of my wife’s 3 brothers served in the Air Force.

My older brother’s son served in the Army in Iraq during the first (1991?) conflict in a WMD unit.

My younger brother’s son is currently serving in Iraq in the Army as an interpreter. (Prayers for his safety are welcome and requested).

All of us volunteered.

I did diddlysquat in terms of personal sacrifice during my time in service.

Today thousands serve in harms way and deserve our prayers or good wishes.

I salute the brave men and women who serve and have served to keep us free.

No, it's not gratuitous use of the Flood filter, there was plenty of lake in front of this temple; I simply rotated the scene 180 in Photoshop (plus a few other tweaks, of course).

En la previa de la segunda fumata, una gaviota se posó sobre la chimenea de la Capilla Sixtina;

This was one of those scenes that jarred me back to reality as I wandered about in a local cemetery. It's often the simplest of things that have effect me this way. Here it was solemn figure of a soldier standing vigil over the grave of a fallen Marine. Arm frozen in eternal salute. The dress uniform splattered with the ubiquitous spray of grass and weeds kicked up by an errant weed whip. I felt a presence here. Not in terms of a ghost or spirit. But a weird sort of heaviness, contemplating a life cut short by someone devoted to service. Someone probably much younger than me. Tight knit bunch these Marines. Attended a Marine wedding a few years back, my cousin married a young Marine corporal. At the reception I noticed a small table near the entrance, set up for just one person. I was told this was the 'missing man' table. It was a tribute to fallen comrades and a custom at receptions and official events. The night was filled with joy and laughter but I found myself pre-occupied with the empty little table and what it signified. And how the young Marines in this room had ensured that the table be present. Lots of respect there. It's one of those moments that has never left me. I thought back on the little table as I contemplated this little statue. And now the two images are forever intertwined.

Give me the freedom

of my own mind

and the respect

the dignity

of my own emotions

my own heart

and experience

not placing your importance

2012 was a dry summer and the storm season was few & far between. Last recorded rainfall for us was back in early June. Working constantly I had that Sunday evening off and was able to get out to get a few snaps of this oncoming storm.

Finally received some much needed moisture. Strong thunderstorms had formed out in western Nebraska & were dying as they were entering southwest Buffalo county here in South Central Nebraska.

No warnings on this storm but she was producing some exceptional views of the core. Incredible cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning strikes pummeled the earth . This storm cell was proceeding to the northeast from the southwest. It crested right on the northern outskirts of the city. Couldn't have asked for better light & storm. Many photographic gems in this set!

I've been wanting to pay respect to the horrible tradgedy in Haiti, but I just couldn't find an idea that was simple yet had the image that I wanted. When I remembered that I had these prayer flags tucked away, I knew what image I wanted.

This morning when I woke up I started thinking about how lucky I was to have a warm bed with food waiting for me in my kitchen, and even a coffee maker that turned itself on so that I could enjoy it right away. I am blessed to live in the country I live in, have the things that I have, but much like those in Haiti, it could be taken from me in the blink of an eye.

All I can do is pray for those in Haiti and their loved ones around the world, that they will have the strength to rebuild their nation.
