July 9, 2014 - North of Minden Nebraska US

What a Day to remember...

I was just out of surgery for my left knee, I wasn't supposed to be out at all. Knee was swollen to the size of a soft ball or bigger. Wrapped & in a cast but I wasn't about to let one of the best photographic storms of the season pass me by. Mrs & Friends helped me into my truck. Gear in hand I was off!

Before I was able to get on this storm. Historically, this storm wrecked havoc on 16 counties with softball and baseball sized hail. I caught up with it just to the south of Minden Nebraska as I was traveling south. I would never get in front of it but only on the back side as it proceeded to the southeast into North Central Kansas.

From my point of view, it was one of the best photographic storm of the year in South Central Nebraska. Some incredible captures from the back side of this incredibly photogenic thunderstorm. Light & Shadow played well as the Sun peaked out at the end of this day!

The inscription on the front archway of São João Batista cemetery, founded in 1850, in the Botafogo neighborhood, is an invitation to those who come there because they want to or because they have to: Volta para onde habitas (Return to where you live). Guided by historian Milton Teixeira, the groups of tourists and Rio citizens who leave superstitions behind get a true outdoor class about architecture and Brazil’s history. Common in cities like Paris, London and Buenos Aires, the guided tours in cemeteries are surrounded by respect and triggered by curiosity. Details that would go unnoticed even for the most attentive eyes make the visit even more interesting, like the tomb dedicated to dead aviators located right in front of the tomb of Santos Dumont, the father of aviation.

Respect League is a not-for-profit group of junior football clubs that have come together to give children the best possible start in football. The League is leading the way in fully implementing The FA's vision for children's football and there whole approach is more child-centered and age-appropriate than traditional Leagues.

They give children the ideal environment to accelerate their learning. The FA have awarded them Charter Standard status and they've won the coveted Bronze Award as the best League in the whole county !

The referees are trained to 'manage' the game rather than just blow a whistle. This means they're talking to the players throughout, encouraging them, advising and helping them to avoid foul play. It's calm, safe and fun. Oh, and the football is fantastic!

It is good to see the tax collectors have always been treated with proper respect.

"Microblast" at Project One Gallery in the Design District of San Francisco features the work of respected San Francisco artists Jet Martinez and his wife, Kelly Ording. Curated for the first time together by Gallery Director Brooke Waterhouse, the artists present some of their best work to date in an atmosphere where their paintings merge together into a union of colors and conceptual patterning. Working side by side in their home studio, these Oakland based artist's paintings take the viewer down two divergent paths which eventually meander together in visual poetry.

Not sure who this is or where the irony is aimed. Potentially sketchy.

The is a photograph from a set of photographs of the 15th running of the Fields of Athenry 10KM took place on Monday, St. Stephen's Day, December 26th 2016 at 11:00 in Athenry, Co. Galway, Ireland. Just under 1,200 participants finished the race today under the Medieval Arch in the town. The weather, for a change, was almost perfect for road running. While there was a stiff breeze into the face of runners for the first 4KM the conditions turned very pleasant and favourable for the final 6KM of the race with the winter sun also appearing.

This is one of the leading 10KM road races in Ireland. It is hard to believe that the race is "only" fifteen years old. It's superb organisation, atmosphere, and great race history gives it the characteristic of a race that is many years older. The credit for this goes to the wonderful athletics club in Athenry AC and the team of volunteers. The attention to every detail in the race which this year attracted over 1,200 participants means that the race has earned it's stripes as one of the leading road races in Ireland.

The race started at the Railway station and then took in a loop of the famous fields of Athenry where it turns left and begins it's return to the town, passing the soccer club, over the railway lines, and finishing under the medival arch in Athenry town for a fittingly atmospheric finish to the race. Race HQ is in the Presentation College in Athenry. Post race showers, prize giving ceremony, and refreshments were provided in the College after the race.

We have a very extensive set of photographs from this year's event. The link to the full set of photographs on this Flickr photostream is here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/albums/72157676673218051. USING OUR PHOTOGRAPHS - A QUICK GUIDE AND ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS

Can I use these photographs directly from Flickr on my social media account(s)?

Yes - of course you can! Flickr provides several ways to share this and other photographs in this Flickr set. You can share directly to: email, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, LiveJournal, and Wordpress and Blogger blog sites. Your mobile, tablet, or desktop device will also offer you several different options for sharing this photo page on your social media outlets.

BUT..... Wait there a minute....

We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. We do not charge for our photographs. Our only "cost" is that we request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, VK.com, Vine, Meetup, Tagged, Ask.fm,etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us or acknowledge us as the original photographers.

This also extends to the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?

You can download this photographic image here directly to your computer or device. This version is the low resolution web-quality image. How to download will vary slight from device to device and from browser to browser. Have a look for a down-arrow symbol or the link to 'View/Download' all sizes. When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

In summary please remember when requesting photographs from us - If you are using the photographs online all we ask is for you to provide a link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. You will find the link above clearly outlined in the description text which accompanies this photograph. Taking these photographs and preparing them for online posting takes a significant effort and time. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc. If you are using the photographs in newspapers or magazines we ask that you mention where the original photograph came from.

I would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

He became famous for standing against the U.S. Government & for holding out the longest. He was a spiritual leader & medicine man. Geronimo final surrender in 1886 was the last significant Apache guerrilla action in the U.S., his group consisted of only 16 warriors, 12 women, & six Children.

Mangas Colorades

1797-1862

A Chiricahua Chief & natural leader because of his intelligence & size. Unusually tall, he was over six feet in height. Mangas united the Apache tribes, led them in a successful war of revenge & cleared the New Mexico area of white settlers. After the Americans started to occupy the region, searching for gold, Mangas tried several peaceful ways to get the whites out of his land. On one occasion, miners tied him to a tree & lashed him nearly to death before releasing him, he was killed by Union soldiers at Fort McLane. One soldier took his scalp, another boiled his flesh from his head, & sold the skull to a phrenologist.

Loren

1840s-1889

Lozen was the younger sister of the mighty Apache war leader Victorio, & the most famous of the Apache War Women. Victorio is quoted as saying, Loren is my right hand...strong as a man, braver than most, & cunning in strategy, Loren is a shield to her people." Loren was quite unlike her counterpart, Dahteste. Loren had no concern for her appearance &, even though she is an several famous photos of Geronimo with his warriors, there is nothing to indicate that she is a woman. She was manly in her appearance, dressed like a man, lived & fought like a man. She devoted her life to the service of her people.

Cochise

1800s-1874

Shi-ka-she was a tall man, six feet, with broad shoulders & a commanding appearance. He never met a man his equal with a lance, & like Crazy Horse, was never photographed. Many have said that he was the most powerful Apache leader in history. At his death, it was reported that his people wailed loudly for more than a day. After his death, the Government broke the historic treaty made with Cochise & in 1876 moved the Chiricahua from the ancient mountain homeland to the dry Arizona desert. "Nobody wants peace more than I do. Why shut me on a reservation? We will make peace; we will keep it faithfully. But let us go around free as Americans do. Let is go wherever we please".

Victoria

1825-1880

A Chiricahua Chief of the Warm Springs Apache. When his people were removed from their ancestral home to the desolate reservation of San Carlos, Arizona, Victorio bolted for Mexico with a group of followers. He & his people terrorized the border country with continual raids. Victorio always managed to elude his pursuers. In October 1880, Victorio died at a place called Tres Castillos while waiting for a small raiding party to acquire ammunition they needed. Victorio was taken by surprise when Genral Joaquin Terrazas & his army attacked Victorio & his band of 78 Apache. His descendants reside on the Mescalero Apache Reservation.

Nana

1810-1900s

Nana was married to Geronimo's sister. After Victorio's death at the Tres Castillos massacre in 1880, it was Nana who guided the remians of the tribe into safety. For more than two months Nana eluded 1400 troops in a thousand-mile campaign with only 40 warriors. Even at an old age & almost with a crippled leg, Nana could out-ride & out-last any warrior in the saddle. He showed no signs of weakness, & challenged any white man that stood in his way. It is said that to revenge of Victorio's death Nana was responsible for killing more white men than Victorio had done in his lifetime. Nana died of old age, & lived his last years in reservation.
