Syracuse Grows will host its 4th Annual Spring Resource Drive on Saturday, April 21, 2012 to support community gardening and urban agriculture throughout the City of Syracuse. The signature event links vital community resources with grassroots food gardening efforts by connecting volunteer labor and much-needed tools and gardening materials with the city’s many community gardeners. During the Annual Spring Resource Drive new and used gardening tools, equipment, and materials are collected from area businesses and local community members for distribution to community gardens across the city. Desired items include gardening tools, lumber and other materials for raised vegetable beds, and compost and manure to build healthy soil. Syracuse Grows is accepting donations throughout the month of April. On April 21, from 10am until 12pm, community members can bring donated items to the Southwest Community Urban Farm on Bellevue Avenue, between Midland and Lincoln. From 10am until 3pm community members can help kick off the gardening season by volunteering at various community gardens. Many city agencies, businesses, organizations, and individuals provide support for the resource drive. This includes seedlings from Grindstone Farm and Daily Harvest Farm, compost from the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency, mulch from the City of Syracuse Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Services, and water access thanks to the Department of Water. “Syracuse Grows is a network of community gardens. We are a coalition working to facilitate city-wide collaboration,” explains Syracuse Grows Board Vice Chair Mable Wilson, “the Annual Spring Resource Drive is an important event for engaging and connecting existing community resources.” Please check the Syracuse Grows website (www.syracusegrows.org) for more information on the resource drive and how to get involved, including details on the items needed and information on the community gardens in your neighborhood.
