VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredge Currituck opens its hull like a clam shell to release dredged sand it collected from the federal navigation channel at Rudee Inlet. The sand is released approximately 500-feet from shore so the current of the water can bring it closer to re-nourish the shoreline. The Currituck was off the Virginia coast from July 18-21, 2012 to dredge within the federal channel of Rudee Inlet. The Currituck is a highly utilized resource throughout coastal projects along the East Coast. During this project, approximately 7,715 cubic yards was dredged. The Wilmington, NC-based Currituck will return to Virginia next year to dredge anticipated shoaling in the channel. (U.S. Army photo/Pamela Spaugy)

This building on 5th Avenue was the home of the Alaska Gay and Lesbian Resource Center (AGLRC) for 6 months in the first half of 1983. AGLRC was located in an apartment on the second floor — the two leftmost windows belonged to it. The apartment consisted of a large squarish room with a large walk-in closet, which was large enough to fit a desk for volunteer staff members who staffed the Gay & Lesbian Hotline (later "Helpline"). This building is in the block on 5th Avenue just west of the Egan Convention Center, which was nearing completion at the time this photo was taken in June 1983 on the day of that year's gay/lesbian pride march.
At the end of June 1983, the AGLRC closed its physical facility due to an inability to continue to pay rent. Shortly thereafter, AGLRC was renamed Identity, Inc., an organization which still exists today. An Anchorage gay/lesbian/bi/transgendered community center was finally opened again by Identity in 2001.

Final Draft of the Client Resource Map for the City of Santa Ana…I hope. I had to change the colors to fit our department’s official color scheme. The map isn’t actually approved yet but I don’t foresee any real significant changes.
The map is targeted towards homeless residents of the Santa Ana Courtyard Shelter from which all of the bus lines originate at the center of the map. I obviously focused more on medical resources such as clinics, hospitals, etc. because I’m a nurse and that’s kind of our department’s purpose. I did however also include routes for Social Services, Social Security, the DMV, mental health, and community resource centers like Micah’s Way and the Southwest Community Center.
I’m hoping the map itself is user friendly enough for residents, or at least simple enough for outreach workers to use to instruct clients on how to get to where they need to go. The reverse side is a little bit more detailed and complicated and might be more useful for outreach workers and staff for planning purposes. I plan to also make a few blown up versions of the map for the Courtyard staff which might make it easier to read then the 8x11 pamphlets.
Something like this might also have some value for the cities further North around the riverbed encampments (like Orange, Anaheim, etc.) but I’m not sure what site I’d focus my efforts around like I did with the Courtyard. Unlike Santa Ana a lot of the homeless population is more spread out through Northern Orange County. La Palma Park or the Honda Center would be two obvious picks, having large concentrations of homeless around each site. I could do one or the other or both. Mary’s Kitchen is also a likely candidate and the site of Illumination Foundation’s planned homeless service center will be conveniently right between La Palma Park and the Honda Center (883 S Anaheim Blvd Anaheim CA 92805). www.midnightmission.org/
