Because the Youth Forum focussed on oil and gas issues, we were taken to the okrug's drill core storage facility. This image is of the facade above the main entrance.

Here, cores drilled anywhere in the okrug are stored for future reference. If the core comes from a government survey, then the whole core is deposited here. If the core was drilled by a commercial company, the law requires a third to be deposited.

When they're received, each core is studied, documented and then stored in 1-metre lengths in a massive warehouse/library (see the next image). A geologist explained how cores are drilled, let us see samples of different sorts of cores, told us how they are documented and then showed us the library.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredge Currituck opens its hull like a clam shell to release dredged sand it collected from the federal navigation channel at Rudee Inlet. The sand is released approximately 500-feet from shore so the current of the water can bring it closer to re-nourish the shoreline. The Currituck was off the Virginia coast from July 18-21, 2012 to dredge within the federal channel of Rudee Inlet. The Currituck is a highly utilized resource throughout coastal projects along the East Coast. During this project, approximately 7,715 cubic yards was dredged. The Wilmington, NC-based Currituck will return to Virginia next year to dredge anticipated shoaling in the channel. (U.S. Army photo/Pamela Spaugy)

The following description of the inoculation process at Dorena is excerpted from pages 72 and 73 of the Whitebark Pine Restoration Strategy for the Pacific Northwest Region. 2009–2013 (available here: ecoshare.info/uploads/documents/WPB_Strategy_PNW_093008cl...):

"The Dorena Genetic Resource Center (Dorena), a component of the regional genetics program of Pacific Northwest Region (and a partner with the regional Forest Health Protection group), has established protocols for blister rust resistance testing of whitebark pine. These protocols are based on those developed and successfully used for screening of western white pine (P. monticola) and sugar pine (P. lambertiana) over the past 5 decades (Danchok et al. 2003).

Resistance testing involves inoculation of young (usually 2-year-old) seedlings with spores of C. ribicola and evaluation of seedlings for up to 5 years after inoculation. Inoculation usually takes place in late August or during September (which coincides with time of natural infection in the field). Seedlings are moved into a climate-controlled inoculation chamber. Temperature within the inoculation chamber is maintained at around 16.7° C (62° F) and relative humidity at 100 percent.

Ribes spp. are the alternative host for C. ribicola, and spores from infected Ribes spp. are necessary to infect the pines. Ribes spp. leaves infected with C. ribicola at the telial stage are collected from forests in Oregon and Washington or from the Ribes garden at Dorena. The Ribes leaves are placed on wire frames above the seedlings, telial side down. Spore fall is monitored until the desired (target) inoculum density of basiospores is reached for each box; the Ribes leaves are then removed. After the target inoculum density is reached for the last box, the temperature is raised to 20° C, and the seedlings are left in the inoculation chamber for approximately 48 hours to ensure spore germination and infection of the pine needles.

Following inoculation, the seedlings are transported outside. The seedlings are evaluated over a period of 5 years for the presence of disease symptoms and mortality. The first symptoms to develop are needle lesions, or ‘spots.’ These are typically assessed approximately 9 months and 1 year after inoculation. Presence and number of stem symptoms along with mortality is assessed annually for 5 years after inoculation."

At the 12MSP, Angola was granted an extension on its mine clearance deadline with the meeting noting “the importance of external support to ensure timely implementation.”

In follow-up to this, Angola presented its resource mobilisation strategy.

The Hoonah Native Forest Partnership (HNFP) is a landscape scale, community led approach to natural resource planning. The overall goals of HNFP are to achieve a resilient blend of timber, salmon and deer production. HNFP will boost local economic diversification and improve watershed health.

An important tenant to HNFP is the development and capacity building of a local work crew. In a rural community where year-long employment is both limited and needed, Hoonah has welcomed this opportunity to train a team of local land managers for a variety of field treatments.

This summer (2015), the team is carrying out assessments of pink salmon abundance and stream type. This data is being combined with advanced landscape-scale mapping and modeling to better understand pink salmon ecology and distribution for watersheds surrounding Hoonah. This data will help inform management, future development and community based planning for surrounding watersheds.

These photographs were taken during a field assessment on Seagull Creek.

The HNFP core partners include,Sealaska, Huna Totem, The Hoonah Indian Association, The Nature Conservancy, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Subsistence Division, the Sustainable Southeast Partnership and the US Forest Service.

El Nido-Taytay Managed Resource Protected Area (16/05/2006)

The El Nido-Taytay Managed Resource Protected Area is located on the north-western tip of the mainland of Palawan. In 1991, the Government of the Philippines proclaimed Bacuit Bay as a marine reserve. In 1998, the protected area was expanded to include terrestrial ecosystems and portions of the municipality of Taytay. It is now known as El Nido-Taytay Managed Resource Protected Area, which covers over 36,000 hectares of land and 54,000 hectares of marine waters. It contains towering limestone cliffs, beaches, mangroves, clear waters, unique forests over limestone and neat farmlands. It is home to five (5) species of mammals, including the Malayan Pangolin and 16 bird species endemic to Palawan including the threatened Palawan Peacock Pheasant, the Palawan Hornbill and Palawan Scops Owl. Bacuit bay is also home to the dugong, dolphins and marine turtles, many of which are threatened species. Colorful coral reef fishes are found here. Some of these are the: butterflyfishes, parrotfishes, wrasses, triggerfishes, angelfishes, surgeonfishes, damsel fishes, emperors, snappers, groupers and rabbit fishes.

In 1984, the then Ministry of Natural Resources issued a MNR Administrative Order No 518 establishing a 36, 000 hectare area in North-western Palawan as a Marine Turtle Sanctuary The El Nido Marine Reserve was expanded by virtue of DENR Administrative Order No. 14 Series of 1992, upon recommendations of the El Nido and Taytay Municipal Mayors to address livelihood opportunities for fishers. Proclamation No. 32 dated October 8, 1998 was passed to Congress for deliberation. Since 1989, several different government and non-government programs and projects have been introduced in the area.
