There are 334 large inflated egg-shaped lights floating on the Dragonfly Lake at Gardens by the Bay. When people touch the oval structures perched on the lake's boardwalk, the lights change colours and each egg emits a musical note depending on the colour it's depicting. The floating eggs - a work entitled Autonomous Resonating Life on the Water and Resonating Trees - is one of seven interactive exhibits at Gardens by the Bay. 32080

A rare scene of stillness in the Magallanes y la Antartica, Chilena Region of Chile. Patagonia is known for it's majestic splendor but definitely not it's moments of silence and stillness. Even in this silence I felt the chaos radiating from the rising sun and colliding with the earth and misty fluctuating clouds high in the sky. A crooked staff lay prone in the water beckoning me to cast spells, so I decided to use it's shape to embrace the scene. I sort of felt like a sorcerer casting a spell of reflection and stillness this day. It was a quiet moment.

We usually hear the expression "Don't ever let them take your dreams away". But what that means anyway? How can anyone take my dreams away from me? And why are my dreams so important for someone to steal them? What's lying behind those words? Well for this one me thinks, we gotta dig a little deeper. Come, join me for a ride then... I dare you!

I have to have dreams in the first place, aren't I? And there has to be an "I", in order to have those dreams. That's key. Our dreams is an extension of us. In essence they are us. Us as in what we wanna be. Who we want be. Where we wanna go. Those are the dreams I'm talking about. Be my guest and replace the word "dreams" with words such as "thoughts", "feelings", "ideas", "emotions", "desires", "passions" anytime. Replace it with any word that resonates with you and pinpoints your inner self. That deep voice in your head and in your heart, that's there when you wake up every morning and motivates you to be who you are, each and every single day. Letting anyone alter those dreams in any way, by any means and to even the smallest extend, is letting him take them away and replace them with his own version. Or plan perhaps...?

But if we let that happen, we won't be ourselves anymore. We'll be a projection of someone else's dreams. Someone else's self. In reality we are letting him take away our identity, we're giving ourselves up. Except for Love, the ultimate betrayal that is. Therefore "I" will not exist anymore. I won't be me anymore. I won't be at all. And without "I", there can't be "We". There will be only copies of someone else. And most probably bad copies, since we won't be authentic any more. Not in a physical level. But in a mental and spiritual level. In that sense we need that "I" to be. Else we would all become the "Rest". Like in the rest of the world. We need to keep our dreams and thoughts and feelings and everything else that makes us unique and original, we need them to build upon them. We need them to be the foundation for our tomorrow's world. We need them as a starting point, as a first step, as a milestone somewhere along our way and as a destination, as the crossing line, at the same time. They can be a beginning or an end. We need them for without them, even Love would cease to exist since it would need that "We", which in turn needs those "I". And if Love would not be, then Hope would not be either. And it goes deeper and deeper. In the end there would be no feelings, no emotions, no driving force, no nothing. We would be empty inside. Empty shells, just look alike of our once mighty self, mere puppets serving someone else's purpose...

That's the real power and the true value of our dreams. They are a force to be reckoned with! What a Man can dream, a Man can do. That's why they are so important. That's why we need them in their original, unique form, coming from inside us. That's why we need to guard them at all costs, until we turn them to reality and therefore they'll have fulfilled their purpose. For in the end, being the gatekeepers of our dreams is being the makers of our own destiny and thus, the guardians of our freedom itself. And to do so, we need to be brave and be strong. We need be daring to dream. We need to be an undaunted soul...

Summer Recollections from the Garland of life on an Autumn evening with a wistful yearning ...

Crepuscular Charm gently resonated echoes as daylight faded in an alley in Folegandros.Lush growth of branches cast shades ; tangled shadows were dancing on the stage of a white wall and in the distance a wavering blaze of light was flaring in the silence of the empty alley ...

Now,all is a memory page in the book of life ; each page retains its trove of recollections,as I'm leafing through, there they stand, ranging like figures from a dream, never forgotten ...

Crepuscular spell and faint sparks in Folegandros,in an alley in Hora, and a story from the harp of memory's strings,as wild, forceful winds are battering the Greek islands now ...

Inside the Castle of Chora ...

I was not planning on shooting tonight with it being cloudy all day. But driving home from work I seen a crack at the horizon and you know the rest of the story. I listened to a talk show from Coast to Coast AM after the shoot walking my dogs and a NDE (Near Death Experience) survivor Tommy Rosa was explaining his experience. A person on the other side said fear attracts things that cause fear. That resonated with me so I looked up a quote on fear. "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

Note di violino

.

…sento da lontano,

nel sordo silenzio di

una fresca e buia notte

un suono dolce e soave,

a volte triste e malinconico

ma mai banale. D'un tratto....

...scendono da lassù… a volteggiare

mille stelle splendenti e…

fra le folte chiome degli alberi

iniziano a danzare per poi

nelle cristalline e fresche acque di

una candida fontana andarsi a posare.

Chiudo gli occhi dolcemente

un lungo e profondo respiro

alzo le braccia al cielo ed

inizio a volare su in alto nel cielo scuro

dove i ricordi ti portano indietro, lontano,

….negli infiniti spazi della mente.

Come spiriti danzanti volteggiano tutt’intorno

coi loro bianchi veli che al dolce suon di un violino

in un soffice abbraccio ti coinvolgono

ti trascinano indietro in quella vita passata

in quei preziosi momenti quando

in compagnìa di un "Fiore"....d’amor parlavi.

Note romantiche, virtuose, scuotono

Notes of violin

.

... I hear from afar,

in the dull silence of

a cool, dark night

a sweet and gentle sound,

sometimes sad and melancholy

but never banal. Suddenly....

... they come down from there ... to whirl

a thousand shining stars and ...

among the thick foliage of the trees

they begin to dance and then

in the crystalline and fresh waters of

a white fountain to settle.

I close my eyes softly

a long, deep breath

I raise my arms to the sky and

I start flying up high in the dark sky

where memories take you back, far away,

…. In the infinite spaces of the mind.

Like dancing spirits they whirl around

with their white veils than to the sweet sound of a violin

in a soft embrace they involve you

they drag you back into that past life

in those precious moments when

in the company of a "Flower" .... you were talking about love.

Romantic, virtuous notes shake

your heart in love, is that violin

enchanted, invisible to your eyes but what

resonates with arrogance in your mind

it mixes with the sweet and intoxicating perfume

of the spring air.

But, .... at the first light of dawn

in a city still almost asleep

its notes slowly thin out, are lost

and the sweet scents with the memories of that life

sadly they are confused with nothing.

Now that past life goes away,

inexorably .... I have lost it forever.

I'm so tired of being here

Suppressed by all my childish fears

And if you have to leave

I wish that you would just leave

'Cause your presence still lingers here

And it won't leave me alone

These wounds won't seem to heal

This pain is just too real

There's just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears

When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears

And I held your hand through all of these years

But you still have all of me

You used to captivate me by your resonating light

Now I'm bound by the life you left behind

Your face, it haunts my once pleasant dreams

Your voice, it chased away all the sanity in me

These wounds won't seem to heal

This pain is just too real

There's just too much that time cannot erase

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears

When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears

And I held your hand through all of these years

But you still have all of me

I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone

But though you're still with me

I've been alone all along

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears

When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears

And I held your hand through all of these years

But you still have all of me

All of me... me... me...

A handsome and familiar gamebird, the Common Pheasant is large and colourful, and has a long tail. Common in farmland and woodland throughout the UK, the males' loud, sharp, croaking call can be heard resonating through the countryside before the bird is actually seen. Pheasants eat seeds, berries, leaves and insects; they roost in trees and can form flocks in winter. During the breeding season, one male may mate with many females, who then raise the chicks alone.

This male was seen in my garden this afternoon - heading for the seed feeders!

In this digitally painted watercolor and ink scene (from one of my own pictures of that place), the charming alleys of Sarlat-la-Canéda come to life, showcasing the extraordinary architecture characterized by its warm, yellowish stone. The alleys are bustling with a delightful mix of locals and tourists, creating a lively atmosphere around numerous cafes and restaurants. The scene captures the essence of this picturesque town in the heart of the Dordogne region.

The stone buildings, adorned with intricate details, form a captivating backdrop to the vibrant street life. The warm hues of the stone resonate with the inviting glow of street lamps, creating a harmonious interplay of light and shadow. The alleys wind through the town, revealing hidden corners and quaint storefronts that beckon exploration.

Locals and visitors alike are depicted engaged in leisurely activities, seated at charming outdoor cafes or strolling along the cobblestone streets. The air is filled with the aroma of the local cuisine, enticing passersby with the promise of culinary delights. The renowned local gastronomy takes center stage, with specialties such as the famous liver pastes from duck and goose, as well as the delectable truffles, making Sarlat-la-Canéda a haven for food enthusiasts.

This digital watercolor painting not only captures the architectural beauty of Sarlat-la-Canéda but also conveys the lively and convivial atmosphere of a city where the love for local gastronomy and the joy of exploration seamlessly come together. It serves as an alluring invitation to experience the charm and flavors of this enchanting destination.

I met Kenneth when I was looking for a different subject, a truly unique looking fellow named Nia (a fearsome large head, dreadlocks wrapped around in a crazy crown,) who a few weeks earlier had agreed to me making his portrait. I described Nia to Kenneth and he told me that Nia had died, perhaps only a week after I had spoken with him. The suddenness. The finality. Even of a near-stranger, jarred and resonated.

Kenneth and I chatted about Nia, that he would do anything for anyone (even annoying amateur photographers). We chatted about death and what is common to all of our lives. Kenneth told me he used to be the chief engineer on several vessels and had traveled all over the world in ships.

I was so sorry not to have made Nia's picture before he left. But I was thankful for Kenneth's reflection, sadness and resilience in these images.

Be thankful.

I accidentally released this yesterday before I was ready so please forgive me for re-posting it! Thank you all so much for the amazing and overwhelmingly positive feedback on my latest announcement. If I was having any second thoughts you guys really bolstered my resolve. Each and every one of your kind comments went straight to my heart. I thank you all so much!!

I really love this image! I don't know if its okay to say that when it's my own but when I am feeling something so strongly while taking and creating an image then when I'm done with it I have a certain attachment, It re-stirs those feelings when I look at it again. And if you haven't already recognized "the road", this is my favorite road. The road I have many shots of including the one of my youngest son in The Traveler and Silent Storms. Hopefully this pictures resonates with you the way it does with me.

In this piece, I sought to capture the essence of autumn as a visceral experience, where nature’s last exuberance fills a narrow, winding lane with an almost overwhelming intensity. The hedges and trees here are not passive elements but instead appear to burst outward, seizing the viewer in an immersive embrace. The composition aims to dissolve the boundaries between observer and landscape, suspending us in a fleeting moment where the natural world feels amplified beyond its usual restraint.

The colors are not merely representational but have a psychological weight, intended to evoke the poignancy and transience of autumn. Each hue is chosen to resonate with the viewer on a primal level, straddling the line between warmth and decay, vitality and surrender. By exaggerating this palette and allowing the landscape to “explode” out of the canvas, I encourage an encounter with nature that is at once intimate and overwhelming—a reminder that beauty, at its height, is often inseparable from an impending loss.

In this work, light becomes a collaborator, suffusing the scene with a saturated glow that enhances the contrast between illuminated and shadowed areas. This heightened play of light and color serves as a metaphor for the cycle of life itself, urging us to confront our own temporality even as we find ourselves enraptured by the beauty of the world. This lane, then, is not simply a path through the landscape; it is a passage through time, memory, and the inexorable cycles that define both nature and human experience.

“I return to problems i can't solve, not because i am an idiot, but because the real problems can't be solved. The universe is expanding. The more we see, the more we discover there is to see. Always a new beginning, a different end.”

― Jeanette Winterson, Weight: The Myth of Atlas and Heracles.

Energetically respond to God. Follow the path He blazes. God's message can be as obvious as a message spread across a building, or softer than the sound of water in a small mountain spring. The perceptive blind lady – Hellen Keller – noted that we cannot perceive everything with our senses. “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart”.

God's voice resonates loudest in the heart. Some hear, some never do. King David counsels that we seek the Spirit's guidance along out paths. "Teach me how to do Your will, for You are my God. Allow Your good Spirit to guide me on level ground, to guide me along Your path." Psalm 143:10

Following on from a recent image looking towards the towering spectacle of the Shard, I thought it might be fun to come back to the view from the top of the Shard, this time looking east beyond Tower Bridge and towards the Docklands. Having used my annual pass to photograph sunsets and evenings in every other direction from the Shard's viewing gallery, this was the final view I wanted to capture, and in some ways the one that resonated the most with me, as the route from Tower Bridge, both north of the Thames towards Canary Wharf and south of the river towards Rotherhithe, is the one that sparked my interest in photographing cityscapes.

As with another recent capture from the top of the Shard, this was taken with my camera perched precariously on top of my satchel, adhering to the building's no-tripod policy while allowing me to extend the shooting time and shutter speed. My aim with this image was to capture a hint of the dusk light striking the buildings as the sun went down, as well as the vibrant lights across the city during blue hour and into the early evening. Nine bracketed exposures were captured in short succession a few minutes after the sun had gone down, with an additional nine about half an hour later. Tower Bridge is conspicuously derelict while it's closed for maintenance works, but one of London's City Cruisers sped beneath the bridge while I was capturing my second batch of exposures, and it seemed to add a nice sense of momentum to the final image, guiding the eye along the sinuous path of the Thames and towards the Docklands in the distance.

The two batches of exposures were separately blended in Photoshop using luminosity masks, then selectively merged using a combination of Lighten, Soft Light and Overlay blend modes. This allowed me to preserve the brightest and cleanest possible finish in the shadows between the buildings, as well as providing a high level of control over the intensity of the city lights. This was beneficial for toning down the highlights in two particular areas of the image: the busy A1203 road north of St Katharine Docks, where the longer exposures were producing light trails, and the lights at the tip of the Canary Wharf skyscrapers.

Colour-grading was fairly straightforward: using Apply Image to target and mask separate portions of the image, I used Colour Balance, Curves and Hue/Saturation adjustment layers, as well as two low-opacity Colour Lookups set to Soft Light -- Night from Day, and Futuristic Bleak -- to enhance the chilly futuristic ambience. After this, I used Silver Efex Pro to selectively lower the midtone and shadow structure within the Thames -- smoothing out its texture -- and a sparing amount of the Pro Contrast filter in Colour Efex Pro to add some definition to the image.

The final adjustments were to bring out the intricate detail within the cityscape. The D800 does a remarkable job of capturing every nuance, even through the Shard's glass windows, but I added a minimal amount of Colour Efex Pro's Detail Extractor to the buildings, as well as adjusting the tone and radius of the Shadow detail using a Highlights/Shadows adjustment in Photoshop. The final result hopefully brings to life the spectacular view from the top of the Shard, but it was also a fun image to shoot and edit considering how many of the buildings in this view I've photographed from a ground-level view.
