Guess what they're doing? I'll give you a hint... there's a slightly smaller third Egret standing off to the left, out of frame, half-watching...
Cold and drizzling day at the AWR... caught out in a tee shirt and shorts in November (the cold weather is here, it seems) and the mud pulled a sole off my three-year old fave hikers... undaunted, I waited until it got warmer and saw three Great Egrets flying in together and had enough time to set the exposure correctly (ha!) and then waited hopefully for them to come closer. Instead, they decided to play... forgot I was cold and wet for 30 minutes... :-)
M31 the Andromeda galaxy, can be found about 2.5 million light years distant. The galaxy contains 400 billion stars, though some estimates say up to a trillion stars. The galaxy is destined to crash into the milky way in the distant future. Does life exist, most likely it does.
This image, my best yet, is not an accurate representation of the true colour of the galaxy. But I can say the blue colour in the outer spiral arms are regions of young hot blue stars, whilst the orange central core area, is densely packed with much older yellow stars, these cannot be resolved, as they are to far away. The mass of foreground stars across the image all reside in our galaxy, the milky way. The smaller galaxies, at the bottom of the image M110 and M32 just left of centre are both gravitationally tied to the Andromeda Spiral.
61 images at iso 6400iso, at 25 seconds, stacked in deep sky stacker, with dark frames subtracted, 25 minutes in total. Canon 760D, 80mm F6 Refracter, on a driven mount, unguided.

I have a feeling that in these days many people realize what is really important in their lives. Now make a resolve and follow it up!
I found this small slice of shadow to rest beneath on the first real hike of the season. Compared to last year, I am very out of trail shape. I knew that going into it, but I underestimated recovery.
The hike itself was pretty easy and I didn't overdo it. I rested a lot and took it pretty slowly. But also, I did over nine miles over some pretty rough terrain.
It's a whole damn thing, but I've been resting since. I had another hike planned for this weekend, but I'm holding off.
Anyway, there were some really lovely flowers out and I got a few photos of them here and there. You'll see. Also, it was nice to see some actual, mostly native shrub-steppe since so much has been lost to invasive species and farming.

Diese Aufnahme entstand bei einem kurzen Halt mit dem Bus in Südfrankreich an der Ardéche. Ein sehr schönes Gebiet für Vogelfotografie aber man sollte Zeit mitbringen.
Tech. Detail: Senkrechter Sonnenstand und gegen den Himmel... Wenn dieser Geier nicht ein (für mich) absolut exotischer Vogel wäre, hätte ich die Kamera bei diesem Licht nicht einmal ausgepackt. Die niedrige ISO (bzw. der bei dieser ISO größere Dynamikumfang) hat aber geholfen den harten Kontrast in der Nachbearbeitung brauchbar aufzulösen.
This photo was taken during a short bus stop in the south of France in the Ardéche valley. A really great area for bird photography but you should be able to put in some time.
Tech. Detail: High Noon and with the sky as background.... If it hadn't been this (for me) absolutely exotic bird, I wouldn't have even taken the camera out in that light. But the low ISO helped to largely resolve the harsh contrast in post processing.
Mike, my dive partner, pointed to a cloud at the limit of visibility--we watched it get bigger, and it resolved into this school of horse-eye jacks, Caranx latus. I got just one shot and then they were too far.
Messier 3 (M3 or NGC 5272) is a globular cluster of stars in the northern constellation of Canes Venatici. It was discovered by Charles Messier on May 3, 1764, and resolved into stars by William Herschel around 1784.
This cluster is one of the largest and brightest, and is made up of around 500,000 stars. It is estimated to be 8 billion years old. It is located at a distance of about 33,900 light-years away from Earth.
A globular cluster is a spherical collection of stars that orbits a galactic core as as satellite. Globular clusters are very tightly bound by gravity, which gives them their spherical shapes and relatively high stellar densities toward their centres.

This was all taken as well during the full moon period, as Globular clusters are less affected by moonlight than other Deep Sky objects.
