On 16th Anniversary of UNSC Resolution 1325, SRSG Kubiš Stresses Women’s Participation in Rebuilding Post-Daesh Iraq

Baghdad, 27 October 2016 – On the 16th anniversary of United Nations Security Council resolution 1325, a high level conference was held in Baghdad that primarily assessed progress made towards implementing the Iraqi National Action Plan on 1325.

In remarks at the opening panel on Thursday 27 October 2016, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš, stated that “In the forthcoming post-Daesh period, the implementation of the National Action Plan on 1325 presents a great opportunity to translate the vision of 1325 into actions to improve the lives of Iraqi women and girls”.

He added that comprehensively addressing the issues covered by the Action Plan and the impact of conflict-related sexual violence will also necessitate examining women’s political representation and participation in governance structures in the aftermath of the conflict with Daesh. He emphasized that women shall be involved in rebuilding Iraq and called upon their full participation in community, local and national reconciliation efforts.

SRSG Kubiš stressed that the budgetary and fiscal shortfall should not dismiss the responsibility of the Governments in Baghdad and Erbil to fulfill obligations to protect women’s rights. He urged the international community to continue and increase support to the government and civil society in this area.

Resolution 1325 is a watershed resolution that, for the first time, acknowledges women's contribution to international peace and security and requires women's participation in all aspects of peacemaking, peacekeeping and peacebuilding. The resolution calls on the United Nations and member states to undertake a range of actions to increase representation and participation of women in decision-making and in preventing, managing and resolving conflict.

Cross Sector Task Force 1325 High Level conference was co-organized by the Government of the Republic of Iraq and the Government of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and was supported by the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Iraq.

China Town. London. Not the sort of picture I would usually take but fascinated by the artistry that had gone into making them. Straightened, cropped and sharpened.

The home – made coffee descended from our African Ancestors is commonly founded in homes where there is an elder. This picture was taken from a home where a young boy was sent by his grandmother to pick some ripe coffee from the coffee tree behind their house then placed in the sun to dry.

I only have one New Year's Resolution this year: embrace my mistakes, be more positive

I happen to live in one of the coolest places ever and yet I've stopped enjoying it, I need to go back to having adventures, even if it means having them alone, bad things are going to continue to happen, that's life, but I simply must stop dwelling on them

One of the little ones playing with Yiayia's fitness equipment, despite a number of warnings to stay off.

1. Finish spinning most of my wool before buying more. It's so easy to start obsessing over colourful blends and fancy wool. I've run out of storage space already, and these fibers are just bundled in a bag on the floor.

2. Finish my work-in-progress knitting projects and try not to start new ones or buy more yarn until old projects are complete. I have quite a few ongoing works including a jacket, top, three pairs of socks, scarves, hat and a pillow case.

3. Finish my three zoom loom projects: two blankets and one doll carrier bag. No more new blankets!

4. Finish up the brown teddy bear for Cinzia and my purple bunny too. Both have been in progress since March 2016. Where has my sewing mojo gone?! There is even purple involved, but it's not enough to motivate me, apparently.

My 3 submitted works for the Resolution Open photography Show.

Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, is in the south-central part of the state on the Cook Inlet. It's known for its cultural sites. The city is also a gateway to nearby wilderness areas and mountains including the Chugach, Kenai and Talkeetna.

Costa Rica has a national motto, one they widely share with tourists and locals alike. Pura Vida. Pure life- live life. Embrace life. Love and live to life's fullest potential. These two simple words embody a powerful message, one that this beautiful country taught me the meaning of. My goal in this year is to try to live by this mindset, to live life for all it's beauty and potential.
