Stond langs het Lieverensche Diep

Reseda is a working class neighborhood located in the west San Fernando Valley.

Sherman Way Blvd is named after Moses H. Sherman, an early day businessman who invested in land, water, and railways.

Reseda has been a filming location for several movies, including The Karate Kid and Boogie Nights.

These yellow signs were installed in late 2020 or early 2021.

This mural was painted on a strip mall building located on Lindley Ave, south of Sherman Way.

It commemorates Reseda landmarks that aren't here anymore.

The Big Donut Drive In was on the corner of Reseda Blvd and Sherman Way. It was replaced by a gas station in the 1970s.

The Reseda Theatre built in 1948 is still standing, but has not been used for many, many years.

The Reseda Drive In was located near Reseda Blvd, north of Sherman Way. It was replaced with commercial development in the mid or late 1970s.

The Reseda mural lasted for a while, then was destroyed by graffiti vandalism. A few months after this photo was taken the strip mall was demolished. It is now a vacant lot.

Reseda is a working class neighborhood in the west San Fernando Valley, about 24 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

1) Biology of Weld

It is a biennial and grows up to five feet in height. The long spikes with small pale yellow flowers start appearing in early June, and they many attract bumble bees and other insects.

2) History of Weld Dyeing

Weld is an ancient dye plant. Apparently it was used to dye the robes of the Vestal Virgins in Roman times.

buy weld seeds

When over-dyed with woad, it produces Lincoln Green, which is supposed to have been used to dye the clothes worn by Robin Hood and his band in the 13th century.

3) Cultivation of Weld

young weld dye plantIt is best to sow the fine black seeds in a tray of compost and it is important not to cover them with soil, as they are then unlikely to germinate. Watering the seeds with the rose of a watering can will cover them enough. These seeds can take up to three weeks to germinate, so keep the soil moist and be patient.

When the seedlings are large enough, plant them out in their final position. Weld does not particularly like a rich soil.

If it is attacked by asparagus beetles, I spray it with liquid derris.

4) Harvesting Weld

I start harvesting the leaves and flower stalks from July onwards, and whilst it is flowering, but while the plant is still green. The colour is more concentrated in the leaves, flowers and seed capsules; the stalks do not have much colour. Old, dried-up weld plants give a dull yellow.

5) Storing Weld Dye

If I have grown more weld than I can use fresh, I dry it. I harvest the plant whilst the leaves are still green, and put the stalks and leaves to dry in my greenhouse. When the leaves have become brittle, I put gloves on and run my hands along the stalks, stripping off the dry leaves and then throw away the stalks.

Reseda, CA - What started out as a fun side project has turned into its own storytelling entity. It was a slot-car racing, sparse and barren landscape and now (three months later) has evolved into a post-apocalypse and World War II diorama complete with: tanks, guns, soldiers, houses, factories, rocks, bushes, and even a brewery (because why not?). It’s not complete, nor do I know what’s next but it is fun to watch it evolve.

Reseda, CA - Meanwhile on my workbench; a dried leaf of Fall blew in the garage and landed on a bed of sawdust. It seemed as if it wanted some sort of attention. We had an impromptu staring competition but I lost. It stayed long enough to tell me its life-story, then suddenly it blew away. That leaf will be missed.

Reseda, CA - Over the past week we have received some much needed rainfall here in Southern California. One of my favorite times of the year is when weather changes, It's like the next chapter or new set of tires.

Reseda, CA - A small storm passed over us as the sun seemly chased it away. This gave our neighborhood a surreal light that lasted only minutes. I was able to only take a few shots before the highly contrasted trees faded into a boring uninteresting light. It seems the most fascinating skys show up right after a storm.

Reseda, CA – There is a reason why the nail was missed. The genesis of this story started about 23 years ago. I was 18 and out with my friends on New Years’ Eve. Like many teenagers I consumed way too much alcohol that night and woke up with the epic of hangovers. So bad I really didn't remember much of the night before (to this day I’m only told ‘stories’).

The next morning my friends dropped me off at my house and all I wanted to do was take a shower, wash previous night off and pass out. It was January but we lived in the desert – so it was HOT, even at 9am. Just as I stepped into the house (hangover & headache in tow) my mother in an ever so sweet voice said, “Before you take a shower your father wants to see you.” I thought, “ok, Dad must of built something in the garage and wants to show me – cool.” I strolled into the garage acting as sober as I could and said, “Mom told me you wanted to see me?”

“Yes!” Dad stood tall and almost emotionless, “I need you to grab those 2 x 4’s, a box of nails and a hammer. Meet me outside when you gathered all of them." As any respective son I followed orders, besides Dad rarely asks me help him when it comes to building anything. There were two; eight foot 2 x 4’s lying next to each other out on the desert floor behind our house. My dad spoke with an authoritative nature, “Now, stack the 2x4’s on top of each other and make a mark every three inches. Take a nail and drive it into the wood until all marks are nailed.” At the time I thought, “alright, simple enough.“

So I began (hangover and all), of course I didn't want to say NO because then I would have to explain to my father that I had been drinking the night before. So here comes the first swing of the hammer, “WHAM!!” Holy Shit was that painful, the sound was crushing and painful to my hung –over ears. But, I had to act like it was nothing or “he would know” So, another swing, another nail and another painful skull breaking sound. This seemed to go on for days. After several nails I was sweating with agony and pain but still somehow managed a weak smile. “There you go Dad, all done.” My father looked at the two pieces of wood slowly. “Good job son.” He then took my creation and threw it away. “Now go take a shower, you smell like a distillery.”

So; all this time my father didn't care about the wood or nails, it was his way of ‘punishment’. That was the LAST time I had a hangover.
