Brisbane Tramway Company
[...] Since the printing of the report the company had sold to the Townsville Omnibus Company a considerable number of light horses which were unfit for the Brisbane traffic, and had formerly been used on the "feeders." They had also disposed of four waggons and three omnibus, the lot coming to nearly £700. This had relieved the company of a considerable number of animals and vehicles for which they had no present use, and they had agreed to take payment for this rolling-stock and these horses in shares in the Townsville company. He [the chairman] had looked into the matter very carefully when he visited Townsville, and he believed the little 'bus company there would be an extremely remunerative investment. The town was so laid out that there were no hills on the routes, and the wear and tear would be but small. At any rate, the board was convinced that they had done the right thing in getting rid of these 'busses on the terms agreed to, and had experienced considerable difficulty in getting rid of them.
He could not allow the opportunity to pass without mentioning the point that was casually mooted at the last annual meeting - namely, the possibility of substituting electricity for horses as their traction power. During the twelve months that had elapsed since that meeting there had been an immense development in the phase of electical science. There was now in Richmond City, Virginia, USA, an electrical street railway that had been running for a number of months with absolute success at a cost of less than half of what the same company had previously expended for the propulsion of their cars by horses or mules. The result of the success of this new system had been very marked in America, and one of the most important effects was that the West End Boston Company had absolutely determined to adopt the system.

The Brisbane tramway network served the city of Brisbane, Australia, between 1885 and 1969. It ran on standard gauge track. The electric system was originally energised to 500 volts, and subsequently increased to 600 volts. All tramcars built in Brisbane up to 1938 had an open design. This proved so popular, especially on hot summer nights, that the trams were used as fundraisers and often chartered right up until the last service by social groups.
Most trams operated with a two-person crew – a driver (or motorman) and a conductor, who moved about the tram collecting fares and issuing tickets. The exceptions to this arrangement were on the Gardens line (Lower Edward Street) where the short duration of the trip meant it was more effective for passengers to simply drop their fare into a fare box as they entered the tram; and the "one man cars" which operated in the early 1930s.
The peak year for patronage was in 1944–45 when almost 160 million passengers were carried. The system route length reached its maximum extent of 109 kilometres (68 mi) in 1952. The total track length was 199 kilometres (124 mi), owing to many routes ending in single, rather than double, track. Single track segments of the track were protected by signalling which operated off the trolley wire. By 1959 more than 140 kilometres (87 mi) of track were laid in concrete, a method of track construction pioneered in Brisbane.
The last track opened was in O'Keefe Street Woolloongabba, in May 1961. However, this track was not used in normal passenger service and was merely used to reduce dead running from Logan Road back to Ipswich Road Depot.
Of the Australian capital cities which closed their networks between the 1950s and 1970s (only Melbourne and Adelaide retained trams, although Adelaide only had one line in operation), Brisbane was the last capital city to close its tram network. Despite the decision to shut down the network, Brisbane's trams were held with great affection by locals, and one commentator described their removal "one of the most appalling urban planning mistakes in the city’s history". There have been ongoing proposals since the early 1990s to reinstate a functional tram network.
Brisbane expanded to become one of the most dispersed cities in the world by the 1870s. In the early years of Brisbane's settlement walking was the most convenient way to get around as most people choose to live close to their workplace. In 1875, the railway line to Ipswich opened up some areas in western and southern districts, however fares were expensive, as was owning a horse.
By 1885 an omnibus service reached almost every part of Brisbane. Omnibuses consisted of a strongly constructed wooden wagon with seating for males on the roof and a back-door entrance to the interior.
On 10 August 1885 the Metropolitan Tramway and Investment Company began official horse-drawn tramway services for the public. The 18 tramcars were built from highly polished cedar and mahogany in the United States by JG Brill Company and John Stephenson Company. Fares were expensive, with the typical patron belonging to the middle class. Some even used the services to go home for lunch. Depression struck in 1893 and combined with 1893 Brisbane floods the horse-drawn tramway services saw large drops in patronage.
The first electric tramway ran along Stanley Street, in South Brisbane on 16 June 1897. Horse-drawn carriages were still being used in 1899.
In 1900 local residents were agitating to have the Kelvin Grove tramway extended along Enoggera Road to the Newmarket Hotel in Newmarket. However, a new bridge over Enoggera Creek would be required.[5] Also there were concerns that the close proximity of the proposed tramway would take revenue away from the railway line. However these concerns were resolved and the tramway extension to the Newmarket Hotel was opened on Monday 27 July 1903.
Up until the end of World War I, Brisbane's trams were the primary method used for travelling within the city.
Between 1923 and 1934 tram services in Brisbane were greatly expanded. Brisbane's tramway system came under the control of the newly merged Brisbane City Council (BCC) in 1925.
After seven years of agitation, Brisbane's tram service was extended to Grange in July 1928. The opening ceremony was attended by the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, William Jolly, and two Members of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, James Stevingstone Kerr and Charles Taylor. The mayor had threatened not to attend any ceremony for the opening of the tram service because two rival groups were organising separate celebrations; he would only attend if there was a single ceremony.
Until 1934, the trams carried mail between the Brisbane General Post Office and suburban post office branches, and also acted as mobile postboxes
Through the 1940s and 1950s the tram system enjoyed strong political support within the council, which continued to expand the tram network and upgrade its fleet with some of the most advanced trams in Australia. Trolleybuses were introduced in 1951. The last tramway to open was in March 1961. Clem Jones became Lord Mayor of Brisbane the same year, and all new route construction was cancelled.
By 1948 Brisbane's trams failed to return a profit as they could not compete with the more efficient bus services. Urban development, often well away from public transport, the rise of suburban shopping centres and the relative decline in the cost of motorcars meant that as elsewhere, Brisbane's public street transport system increasingly had to compete with the private motor car and patronage slowly declined from a post war peak of 148 million passenger journeys in 1946, to approximately 64 million passenger journeys in 1968.
Political support for the tram system waned in the 1960s, particularly so after the Paddington tram depot fire on 28 September 1962. 67 trams were destroyed, which represented 20% of the entire fleet. Brisbane's Lord Mayor Alderman Clem Jones was pro-freeway and private car. The Kalinga, Toowong, Rainworth and Bulimba ferry routes closed in December 1962.
In common with many other cities, Brisbane converted its remaining tram lines between 1968 and 1969 to all bus operation. The last trolley buses ran on 13 March 1969 and the final trams ran on 13 April 1969. Photographs of this last tram ride, organised by Grahame Garner and other tramways workers are in the University of Queensland Fryer Library collection. The tramway closure was notable for the speed with which it was carried out. Over 300 replacement Leyland Panther buses were purchased, at the time the largest single bus purchase in the world. Most older, wooden trams were stripped of metal parts and then burnt at the City Council's yard at Cribb Street, Milton (adjacent to the tramway workshops). The bodies of later, all-metal cars were sold as sheds and playground equipment.
The Brisbane Tramway Museum Society was formed in 1968 to preserve some of Brisbane's trams. At present the museum has 24 Brisbane trams in its collection, with 6 operational; California type tram 47, Ten Bench tram 65, Baby Dreadnought tram 99, Dropcentre tram 341, Four Motor tram 429, and the last tram built and officially operated in Brisbane, Four Motor Phoenix tram 554. Tramway operations commenced at the museum at Ferny Grove in 1980.
There have been several proposals from both the Brisbane City Council and state government to return a tram or light rail system to Brisbane since the 1990s. The most prominent of these include the ambitious 1997 Brisbane Light Rail Transit proposal. The plans escalated to a Queensland government tender for four company consortia to purchase new trams, construct and operate the system in 1 the project was projected to cost A$235 million but was subsequently vetoed in favour of expanding the existing bus network.
These various proposed options included a line from Roma Street station to Queensland University of Technology’s CBD campus along George Street, CBD to West End and University of Queensland via Victoria Bridge and Melbourne Street and CBD to Fortitude Valley via Wickham Terrace.
In 2007, following several failed road and tunnel projects and based on the recommendations of the Brisbane City Council's 2006 CBD masterplan, Premier Peter Beattie announced $250 million of state government funding for an extensive light rail system to rival Melbourne's and significantly larger than those of Sydney or Adelaide. The plan, at the centre of the government's "Smart City" plan, was to link South Brisbane to New Farm and Bowen Hills with future extensions down the newly created South Eastern and Inner Northern Busways, bridges and pedestrian spines.[14] In the March 2008 Brisbane city elections, the Queensland Greens campaigned on a more comprehensive plan. However, by June 2008 progress had stalled, without an official project announcement, the Brisbane City Council once again distancing itself from the plan due to cost of the investment (estimated at $600 million for the New Farm link) and instead giving consideration of diverting the funds to enhancing the bus and CityCat ferry systems.
Types of trams
Unlike many other systems, Brisbane never adopted an alphabetical or numerical system for classifying its trams (cf Melbourne trams), preferring instead to use official descriptions, such as "standard centre aisle car", or "drop-centre saloon car”.

Delivery of early combination cars was delayed and as a result the tramway company decided to convert many of the horse tram to electric operation, as a temporary expedient. Despite this, many of these converted cars remained in passenger service well into the 1930s.
California Combination car
The prototype Brisbane electric tram (No 1) was built at the Melbourne cable tram workshops from the body of a horse tram, and had 5 saloon windows instead of the usual 4 windows on the new-built Combination cars, with one fixed and one tip-over seat on each end platform.
Large Combination cars
These three trams were built in 1904 from three single deck horse trams, similar to the new-built California Combination trams but with 6 saloon windows as opposed to 4 on the new trams, and a single fixed cross-bench seat on each end platform instead of 2 tip-over seats each end. Withdrawn from service 1925 to 1930s.
Saloon cars
Each tram in this class was constructed by joining two single deck saloon horse trams together on a single motorised chassis. Their long, enclosed bodies gave rise to their nickname of "coffin cars". They were built in 1897, when delivery of new electric trams was delayed. 6 cars in this class. They were all withdrawn from service by 1930.

The 6 bench horse trams were motorised and later most were lengthened to accommodate 10 cross benches. One car was to remain in service until 1958 as an advertising car.
New-built electric trams
California Combination
Officially referred to as "Standard Combination" trams, but more popularly referred to as "matchboxes". They had a central 4 window saloon with 2 tip-over cross-bench seats on each end platform. There were 62 trams in this class, built between 1897 and 1904, with the last one withdrawn from passenger service in 1952. Two, (nos 14 and 15), were converted into "scrubber" cars (track maintenance cars). Several were used as advertising cars, with 47 and 53 being used as one man cars on the Gardens shuttle route.
Nine Bench Cars
These 4 trams were constructed in 1897 and 1898 by the Brisbane Tramways Company. They were cross bench cars with no centre aisle. Two of the benches (those attached to the end bulkheads) were fixed and the other seven benches were tip-over. They could carry 45 seated passengers, plus standees. Two were withdrawn from service in 1938, the other two were probably withdrawn in 1943.
Brills
These 20 cars were officially "bogie open tip-over cross-bench cars". They were a standard design tram built by JG Brill Company of Philadelphia, although two were built by the Brisbane Tramways Company, presumably under licence from the Brill Company. They each had 4 fixed back-to-back benches and 8 tip-over benches. The first 8 had clerestory roofs, the remainder had plain roofs. The first 8 were also fitted with couplings for trailers, but the trailers were eventually motorised (see "light twelve bench cars" below.) As these trams only had hand brakes, operating a coupled set was physically demanding on drivers. In later years these workhorses were very dilapidated and had diagonal cross bracing on each bulkhead to reduce body sway. One tram was involved in a bad accident in 1944 and was converted to centre aisle design (see Special Dreadnoughts). They were gradually withdrawn from service between 1937 and 1952.
Light Twelve Bench Cars
These eight cars were originally built as trailers between 1901 and 1903, but were motorised in 1912. They had 12 fixed back-to-back benches and could carry 66 passengers. They were all withdrawn from service between 1948 and 1951.
Standard Ten Bench Cars
There were 32 of these sturdy little single truck trams constructed in Brisbane. 28 were built by the Brisbane Tramways Company between 1907 and 1921 and a further 4 were built by the Brisbane Tramways Trust between 1923 and 1925. They had fixed, back-to-back bench seating carrying 50 seated passengers (plus standees). They were commonly called "toastracks" or "jumping jacks". In 1936 4 of these cars were converted to Baby Dreadnoughts (see below); another two were converted to this class in 1944. Apart from one car converted to an advertising car and another retained for historical purposes, they were all withdrawn from service between 1952 and 1955.
Dreadnoughts
Officially referred to as standard centre-aisle trams, 65 trams in this class built between 1908 and 1925. These trams could carry 90 passengers. The last 21, which were built for the Brisbane Tramways Trust between 1924 and 1925, had 12 windows, remainder built with 6 windows. Originally they were built with open end platforms, but these were enclosed in the 1930s. Some received "streamlining" with oval windows and skirting around their bogies. The attached picture illustrates the differences between various members of this class. The tram in the foreground is a 12 window Dreadnought (built by the Tramways Trust), still with seats on its end platforms and no streamlining. The tram ahead of it is an older, 6 window Dreadnought (built by the Tramways Company), but with its end seats removed and streamlining around its windows and skirting below the body of the tram.
"Special" Dreadnoughts
Each of these four cars was unique in their own way. Two were outwardly like the Dreadnoughts. Tram 100 was built in 1903 as the Tramway Company Manager's personal "Palace" car, fitted with carpets, plush seat covers and further interior decorations. Converted to regular passenger use in 1918 and was withdrawn from service in 1958. Tram 110 was built in 1906 as the prototype for the Dreadnoughts, but it had different trucks, which resulted in high steps. It was withdrawn from service in 1952. Tram 101 was built in 1899 originally with no solid roof, just a canvas awning suspended from a lightweight frame. It was withdrawn from service around 1935. Tram 104 was converted in 1943 from a Brill 12 bench car that had been badly damaged in an accident. In its converted form this tram had design features derived from the Four Motor, Dropcentre and Baby Dreadnought tram designs. It was withdrawn from service in 1958.
Stepless Car
Known as "big Lizzie", also sometimes referred to as a "New York type tram", tram 301 was intended to be the first of a fleet of inter-urban trams. It was built by JG Brill Company in 1912 and imported in 1914. It was unusual for a Brill stepless car in that it was partially made of timber, rather than the normal all-metal construction. It was the first fully enclosed tram in Brisbane. Heavy and troubled by poor road clearance, it usually only saw service on the West End – Ascot line and was withdrawn from service in 1935.
"One man" trams
Between 1929 and 1930, 9 Dreadnoughts were converted to "one-man" operation, as a cost-saving measure. These trams were operated with drivers only and without conductors. They were only used on the Rainworth and Red Hill routes. Passengers were required to enter the tram from the front entrance and pay the driver as they entered. For this reason these trams had a distinctive colour scheme which included red and white diamonds on their front aprons. In May 1934 one man operation was abandoned and these trams were repainted in normal colours.
Two combination trams were also converted to one man operation for use on the Gardens route. The first tram was converted in 1925, the second in 1930.
"Baby" Dreadnoughts
Sometimes called "small centre-aisle" or "single truck saloon" cars, the 6 trams in this class were built primarily for the hilly Spring Hill route. They were built in two batches: the first four in 1936 were converted from 10 bench trams, the last two were built in 1943 using the underframes from 10 bench trams, making the last two trams in this class the non-bogie cars built in Australia. These trams were fitted with special sanders allowing sand to be dropped not only in front, but also behind, their wheels, in case the trams slipped backwards on the steep section of the Spring Hill line. They were withdrawn from service in 1958–1959, one car was preserved.
Dropcentres
The most numerous of Brisbane's trams, there were 191 trams of this class built between 1925 and 1938. Officially called "bogie drop centre combination cars", (usually shortened to "dropcentre" or "droppie") these trams' distinctive drop centre compartment was open to the elements, with only canvas blinds to provide protection for passengers in cold or wet weather. Although designed to be operated using airbrakes, most cars in this class were instead built with rheostatic brakes and hand brakes. However, the last 17 cars (Nos 370–386) were built with airbrakes. Subsequently, many of the older cars in this class were retrofitted with airbrakes and had their rheostatic braking systems removed. Early cars were built with open ends (meaning the drivers were unprotected from the elements) but later cars were built with enclosed ends (or "vestibules"). The ends of all the earlier cars of this class were enclosed by 1934. These trams were last used in regular service in December 1968.
Four Motor (FM) trams
Officially referred to as "drop centre saloon cars", or "four motor cars", they were popularly referred to as "400s", "FM's" or "silver bullets". They were the first class of trams built in Brisbane with airbrakes. 155 were constructed by the Brisbane City Council between 1938 and 1964, with a maximum carrying capacity of 110 passengers. Trams 400–472 were built with wide centre doors, 407 was altered to narrow centre doors and renumbered 473 (and the tram to be numbered 473 entered service as 407), trams 474–554 built with narrow centre doors. Through the 28 years during which they were built, many innovations were introduced, such as fluorescent lighting, helical gears, resilient wheels, remote controlled controllers and streamlined construction techniques. Early versions had canvas blinds in the doorways, while later versions had sliding doors. The last 8 trams were built from components salvaged from the Paddington tram depot fire and were painted light blue with phoenix emblems below the motorman's windows, to symbolise that the trams had risen from the ashes of the fire.
Workshops, power houses and administration
Workshops and administration for the electric tram system were initially located in cramped quarters at Countess Street, at the western side of the Roma Street railway yards (now the site of the Roma Street Parkland), but in 1927 were relocated to Milton. Access to the workshops was from Boomerang Street in Milton, off Milton Road. Head Office was accessed from Coronation Drive (then known as River Road).
Power for the electric trams was originally drawn from a power station operated by the tramway company adjacent to its Countess Street depot and workshops. As the tramway company increased both the number of trams and the length of routes, the power supply rapidly became inadequate. Additional power generating units were installed at Light Street depot and a further powerhouse was built on Logan Road, Woolloongabba, adjacent to the Woolloongabba railway line. Inadequate power supply was to remain a problem while the tramways remained in private hands. With the takeover of the system in 1922 by the Brisbane Tramways Trust (and subsequently the City Council) considerable investment was made in many areas including power generation and distribution. A larger powerhouse was built in New Farm which commenced generation in 1928 and was sufficient for both the needs of the tram system and other consumers.
The original Countess Street powerhouse was demolished and material from it was used to construct the new Tramways headquarters.

No Flash Report updates have transpired in the last four days. I'm not planning any Flash Reports for the foreseeable future. No one is corresponding with me about what is on their mind and fortunately I don't have any deaths to report. I do know a couple of guys have had a rough time lately do to surgery and other age related problems but they don't come under the heading of "Urgent Messages." When those arrive I'll report on them. The two people I'm tracking right now, due to health problems, are; Don Keeter and Leonard Van de Hey. Keeter is in a Kansas City rehabilitation facility and Van de Hey is in a Wisconsin hospital following surgery. Word received today was that there will be more of the same for the former Carthage Cub from 1950-51.

The next report will have an update on what happened with regard to the guy offering to give me a Mickey Mantle baseball card and also more information on the late Roger Vander Weide's baseball career. His older brother Robert was "top dog" in the operation of the Orlando Magic when they entered the National Basketball Association.
August 15, 2013. The photos are viewed by a number of former KOM league ballplayers and their families. I learned, by posting these photos that Leonard Van de Hey, a member of the 1950-51 Carthage Cubs had surgery yesterday in Wisconsin. Also, a nice note was received from the daughter of the late Johnny LaPorta, Carthage Cubs 1949-50 that she enjoys the photos. Her mother, Angie, the greatest scorekeeper in the history of Carthage baseball, is residing in a nursing home in the Chicago area and still retains the memories of many of the KOM era.
In the next Flash Report an article will address the subject of radio stations that broadcast KOM League games. If you heard a game or games over KGLC in Miami, OK, KSEK Pittsburg, KS, KDMO Carthage, MO, KIND Independence, KS, KWON Bartlesville, OK or WBBZ in Ponca City and wish to share a memory I'd love to include it in the article. There were no games aired of Iola, Blackwell or Chanute home games since those towns didn't have a radio station until nearly a decade after the KOM League folded.
The voice of Miami baseball was Russ Martin. He pastored the First Christian in Miami and was well known for the dramatic phrases and embellishment of games when they became a bit drab. For a while, Joe Pollock, former KOM spedster with three different clubs was his play by play color man.
Pittsburg Browns games were carried on KSEK radio. That station was on the Liberty network and carried a game of the day with Gordon McLendon and Lindsey Nelson doing most of the games. If you got bored you go up to the top of the radio dial and get the Mutual Broadcasting Company game with Al Helfer doing the announcing on radio station WMBH in Joplin. In the evening that station carried the Joplin Miner games with Bill Grigsby doing the play by play. As a point of trivia the last KOM game broadcast was in 1998 with Grigsby doing most of the play by play and not so ably assisted by Yours truly. That was about as much fun as I ever had. By the way one of the announcers for Pittsburg was Thad Sandstrom who later headed up the WIBW radio and TV empire. If you want to know the fate of Mr. Sandstrom check that out on the Internet. The story is too long and gory to place here.
Bill Platt, James DeStefano (aka Jim King), Fred Pralle and Keith Upson broadcast for Ponca City, Carthage, Bartlesville and Independence, respectively. The story of Upson is contained under the last photo on this site. He is shown with the 1948 Independence Yankees. There are some great tales about the last four guys mentioned but I'll hold off writing anything about them to see if anyone has read the material to this point.

It is most likely that Sue is referring to the photos that one of my readers has sent her way. But, I can always hope someone likes the Flash Report. Last week a nice summary was sent to me by Bill O’Donnell. I was going to use it to justify why I still prepare these reports but it got lost somewhere in the innards of the e-mail file. So, Bill, after reading this and you still feel the same way you might want to re-send me a copy of that.
But, on the other hand, if you receive these reports and think they have outlived their usefulness you can let me know. The beneficial aspect of these reports for me, according to what I read in the literature, is that keeping the mind occupied might help stave off old age memory and mental problems. And, it may help folks as old as you to read this material and see if you can make sense of it. That way we are either both crazy or dually sane.

John, you posted in my dad's guest book. Thank You. His funeral is tomorrow August 6. Would you happen to be able to e-mail me any stats on my dad? I know his family would love it. I remember as a kid going through a trunk with all his baseball gear and seeing him in a uniform with the Carthage name on it.

VANDER WEIDE, ROGER Aged 85, was peacefully called home to his Lord and Savior on August 1, 2013. He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Thelma. He loved his children, David (Jean), Steven (Yvonne), and Robert; his grandchildren, Susan (Mike) Meeuwsen, Jenny (Mike) O'Neill, Ryan (Jenna) Vander Weide, Lisa (Joel) Terpstra, Chad, Josh, Hannah, Katie, Ben, Jessa, and Addie Vander Weide; and his great- grandchildren, Devin, Alexia, Breckton, Bellary Meeuwsen, Katelyn, Kylie, Kelsey O'Neill, Emma Vander Weide, Lillian, Natalie Terpstra were his pride and joy. Roger is also survived by his brother, Russell and Barbara Vander Weide. Roger owned Vander Weide Plumbing. He was a pitcher in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, and was an elder and Sunday school teacher at Hope Reformed Church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 11:00 AM at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. SE, with Rev. Peter TeWinkle and Rev. Dr. Robert Eckard officiating. Interment Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will greet relatives and friends at the funeral chapel Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Vander Weide pitched for the Carthage Cubs in late 1947 and early 1948 but not enough to make it into the official records that were reported in the Baseball Guides. However, due to his late arrival, in 1947, he got into the team photo that included manager Al Kluttz. By that time Woody Fair was back in the Carolina league and Al, brother of big league catcher, Clyde Kluttz was in charge of the Carthage club. Also on that team was Ray Diering the younger brother of Chuck who was with the St. Louis Cardinals, Eddie Vargo who became a long time National league umpire, Wayne Boyer one of the famous baseball family from Alba, Mo. and Bob Mahoney who made it to the major leagues with the other St. Louis team, the Browns and also the Chicago “Pale Hose.” A lot of scribes used to call the White Sox by that name.
It was mentioned that Vander Weide is in the 1947 Carthage team photo. For those of you with the book “The KOM League Remembered” published by Arcadia, that photo is on page 27. Even if you don’t have that book the photo is still there. In that photo are 20 faces which include the batboy, Frederick “Pee Wee” Smith. Of that group only four are still alive. Even Harry Smith’s older brother, Pee Wee, has passed away. Harry is mentioned since he was the Carthage batboy in 1949 and on page 65 of the book mentioned previously struck the most casual photo of any batboy ever did for a team photo. For you who don’t have the book now nor ever will he is laying down in front of the Carthage team that had a few guys who turned in long baseball careers including the best known member, Bob Speake. Since Hal Brown is in that photo and receives these Flash Reports I’m mentioning him to let him know he isn’t forgotten. Of the 18 fellows in the 1949 Carthage Cub team photo only five are still living. Harry Smith suffered the same fate of his older brother Pee Wee and passed away a number of years ago at Carthage, MO. Pee Wee died in Kansas City.
Since it wasn’t mentioned in the obituary I’ll mention it here since I’ll get questions about the date of his birth. It was June 16, 1928 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Still remembering the short term players:
Over the years I've discussed whether Carroll Lloyd "Biff" Jones ever played a game in the KOM. I found a column this morning where the Omaha, Nebr. native played shortstop one night for Ponca City at Bartlesville and had two singles in four at bats. He was born 6/17/1929 in Omaha and died 12/28/2008 while living with his son in Tonopah, NV.
Biff was with Ponca City for a very short time and upon his release he went to Chanute, KS on the way home to Omaha, and tried to get a shot with them. Dick McCoy verified that Biff did go to Nevada and died there for he and his wife Mollie attended the funeral. I happened to get interested in Biff in recent days as I had found his name on the roster of an Omaha team that played in the National Baseball Congress Tournament at Wichita in 1960.
Also on that 1947 team was George E. Seely (sometimes spelled Seeley). He was born either 1/1/1924 or 1/3/1924 according to the records I've uncovered. George pitched in two games for Ponca City before being sent to Zanesville, Ohio. If I have the right George Seely and I think that I do, he graduated from high school in 1943, went to the Univ. of Colorado until being inducted into the US Army, also in 1943. After his final year in baseball, which I think was 1948 he got a degree in education and wound up teaching school for many years in Pueblo.

The Ponca City News showed him playing shortstop upon his arrival. He wasn't going to play that position too long for Boyd Bartley and Jim Baxes were going to play the position for the lions share of the time.

Hi John: Is there any way to check a few more games to see if Jones did play another position? Since Boudreau played in 122 games at 1B, I doubt that Jones played 1B. If he did it may have been only one game
He doesn’t show in the SS fielding of players in ten games or more

Jones didn't play any first base for Ponca City that I found. And, he didn't have that many at shortstop either. I found what I reported earlier in a scrapbook kept by a female fan of those teams for 2-3 years. I imagine Jones did a little pinch hitting after he got two hits in his first game. I'll look at that scrapbook again and see if anything else appears. I think he played for Ponca City prior to the arrival of Baxes from Santa Barbara. After Baxes got there nobody but Bartley was going even get a shot at playing short.
When Jones went back to Omaha and took up amateur ball he was basically an outfielder. In 1960 when the Omaha Thomases went to the NBC tourney in Wichita he was their left fielder.
The Omaha team was sponsored by the Thomas Plumbing Company. They had their share of ex-Joplin Miners, Independence Yankees, Iola Indians and Ponca City Dodgers on the1960 team. Don Hunter and Biff Jones had played at Ponca City, Robert "Bugs" Redden at Iola, Bill Holderness played for Independence in '49 with Mantle and later committed suicide, and Dave Benedict another of Mantle's teammates at Joplin was also on the team. You probably know that Dave Benedict's son was Bruce.
If any reader would like to chime in on additional information regarding Biff Jones, join the crowd that might not be large enough to fill a pay telephone booth. That is, if there are still any remaining in the era of cell phones.

I wasn’t kidding
In a recent Flash Report I mentioned that my first book “Majoring in The Minors” was like a pretty girl, hard to get. Here is a note from “back east.” “Hi John, I thought I would see if I could hunt up your book. There is one on Ebay listed at $160, supposedly a discount from the original price of $200. Well, I decided to see how flexible the dealer is and sent in a $35 offer. She countered at $125. I then sent in another offer with a note stating that I really didn't want to pay more than $50, but since the book also has several autographs, the highest I could pay would be $60 She declined the offer with a note saying the lowest she would go was $100. I have a hunch that she might consider splitting the difference, but I was really stretching my budget to offer the $60. Maybe you have someone else that might continue the haggling and reach agreement. I will still keep my eyes open during my tag sale and flea market hunting. Enjoy the summer!!!!!!! I looked at that signature page once again. Only 26 guys signed it. Stokes Dodson and Nick Najjar signed twice. We had a book signing and those were being passed back and forth and guys didn't know if they had signed before or not. I could write pretty good size book just telling the stories I know about those 26 guys. Of course, it wouldn't be read. Bob Saban who signed that was the cousin of Lou Saban who coached the Boston Patriots and he was also kin to the current coach of the Alabama football team.
I looked closely at the top of one of those pages. I believe that is the hard cover edition. That book is worth more than the soft cover that came out four years prior to that. If that's the hardcover then it was signed by all those guys at Chanute, Kansas in 2000. That book was purchased by a public library. That is why it's in mint condition. I could buy that for $100 and still make a buck on it due to the autographs. But I'm not going to do it.
A tip from the old batboy
I believe that book is still listed on E-bay and if you don’t have the hard copy edition it would be worth the money if for no other reason than 26 autographs that you could never assemble.

Recent honors bestowed on former KOM leaguers.

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — Bill Virdon broke into professional baseball in 1950 with the Independence Yankees of the Class D KOM League.
Virdon, who’s lived in Springfield (Mo.) for more than 50 years, returned to southeast Kansas last Saturday for only the second time since 1950. The previous visit came in 1996 during a KOM League reunion engineered by league historian John G. Hall of Columbia.
Virdon, who was accompanied by wife Shirley, was inducted into the Independence Baseball Hall of Fame to highlight a Baseball Game Luncheon at the Independence Historical Museum & Art Center, 8th and Myrtle.
Virdon never played for the Yankees. He was traded to the Cardinals and was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1955. He was dealt to the Pirates early in the 1956 season. The left-handed batting, right-handed throwing Virdon patrolled center field for the Pirates most of the time through the 1965 campaign.
Guests last week, in addition to the Virdons, included longtime University of Kansas sports voice Bob Davis and Ban Johnson players Charles Stepp and Merle Blair. Also, seated up front for the meal of hot dogs, peanuts and cracker jacks were researchers Jan Johnson and Mike Webber.
Virdon, who answered several questions from the audience, had at least one very pleasant surprise in the crowd.
Bill Robinson, who lives in Wichita, and his late wife Virginia housed Virdon and another player in Independence.
“I don’t know anything negative about Bill Virdon,” Robinson said. “I never played baseball. We had a pleasant time.
“I’m 94. I do my own driving. I’m going to break Social Security,” Robinson quipped.
“We lived on North 11th St.,” Robinson said. “Our family ran Robinson Supply. I’ve been living in Wichita six years. We make it to Independence every three or four months.”
Virdon, naturally happy to see Robinson, said he couldn’t recall the name of the roommate.
“I don’t have a clue,” Virdon, 82, said with a laugh.
Virdon, who played Ban Johnson baseball for two summers at Clay Center (Kan.) before signing with Tom Greenwade and New York for $1,800, had no problem with Independence’s role in his development as a player.
“I found a position,” Virdon said. “I wanted to be a shortstop. Bunny (player/manager Bunny Mick) put me in center field.”
Just three players on the 1950 Independence Yankees reached the major leagues — Virdon, Don Taussig, another outfielder, and pitcher John Gabler.
The Independence roster was sprinkled liberally with southwest Missouri youths (a testament to Greenwade).
Bill Drake, a 1948 Joplin High School graduate, was a right-handed pitcher on the club. Drake, who played American Legion baseball in the summer, starred in football for the Eagles for Russ Kaminsky and in track for K.E. “Doc” Baker.
“Bill’s strength, first, was as a defensive player,” Drake said of Virdon. “He was a good overall player, of course. The thing I remember as much as anything about him was simply he was a good man. He was a gentleman. I respected him.”
Drake, also a Baxter Springs Whiz Kid, continued playing baseball after his professional stint as a third baseman/pitcher with such semi-pro teams as the Miami-based Tri-State Miners and Home Street Garage of Kansas City to supplement his income.
Drake, 83, said he once hit four consecutive home runs in a game for Home Street Garage. He lives in Raytown.
Virdon was Virdon last week, indicated museum coordinator Sylvia Augustine, with his accommodating manner.
“He always has been that way, I understand,” she said. “He signed everything that was brought to him.”
Virdon, a manager of the year in both the American League (Yankees) and National League (Astros), joined individuals Mickey Mantle, Ralph Terry, Glenn Wright, Bill Walker, Cy Blanton and Eugene Packard in the Independence shrine: The Independence Producers of 1921 and 1930 also have been honored.
The Western Association Producers of 1930 claim the first night game in organized baseball on April 28 at Shulthis Stadium in Riverside Park.

Kevin Haskin: Rich baseball history shared at induction ceremony
Inaugural class enshrined into Shawnee County hall
There was mention of Connie Mack on Wednesday at the Bettis Family Sports Complex.
That was a reflection of just how much history was shared at the induction ceremony for the inaugural class of the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame.
Lee Dodson, known simply as Mr. Baseball in Topeka, referenced Mack as one of his heroes.
“I like guys who lived to be 100, or close to it, since I’m closing in on it,’’ said Dodson, who at 89 shared some witty insight into a sport he loved ever since he attended his first game.
That happened to be at Chandler Field in Topeka. Dodson, who would go on to play professionally before coaching and organizing scores of teams and leagues, watched that day as his father managed a club.
“I couldn’t figure out,’’ said Dodson, “how the person who invented this game I was watching could make it so a ball hit to the shortstop could result in a play that was so close involving the batter who was running to first base. It was such a close race. That, and a lot of other things, absolutely hooked me.’’
Over time, Dodson figured quite a bit regarding baseball. So too did the other inductees in the inaugural class — Ken Berry, Beany Conwell, Bingo DeMoss, Marion McDonald, Mike Torrez, Fred White and Gene Wilson. The wide-ranging group represented players, builders, coaches, media and umpires.
The hall does not yet have a permanent display, though information on the inductees and history of baseball in Shawnee County can be found at www.sncobaseballhof.org.
When addressing the audience Wednesday, Berry told how he agreed to have his name affixed to a complex that would eventually be home to numerous youth teams.
“They called me up in 1969 and asked if they could put my name up,’’ recalled Berry, “and I said, ‘Sure, but you guys should know I’m only hitting .230.’ ’’
That recollection came from his 14-year career in the major leagues, in which Berry was an All-Star outfielder and two-time Gold Glove winner. Berry credited Conwell for leading the innovators who started the Ken Berry League. Conwell became the league’s first chairman of the board and was a fixture at the facility. He engaged in every task imaginable while also helping organize several teams.
In accepting the glass obelisk presented to each of the inductees, Conwell’s son, Kent, said: “As I know my dad would like to say, ‘Thank you. Now let’s go build something.’ ’’
For McDonald, his most enduring project was at Washburn.
It was in 1957 that he reinstituted a baseball program for the Ichabods as their coach.
His son, Bill, recently moved back to Topeka after spending 42 years in Michigan. He remains impressed by all the people who recall his father, who also served as a professional scout.
“I hear so many wonderful stories about my dad connecting people with baseball,’’ McDonald said.
One favorite that McDonald shared was the origin of the uniforms Washburn once wore that read “Topeka’’ across the chest.
Turns out, Marion McDonald got the Topeka Reds to donate them to WU after the minor-league team left town following the 1961 season. Bill McDonald said he heard that Pete Rose’s name tag was stitched into one of the uniforms, a story he still needs to research.
One inductee into the Shawnee County baseball hall who pitched to Rose was Torrez, who won 185 games and posted a 3.96 earned run average over 18 big-league seasons.
Another inductee, Fred White, called many of the games Torrez worked. The longtime anchor for both WIBW television and radio went on to become a broadcaster for the Kansas City Royals.
Although a family commitment prevented Torrez from attending, Berry was a contemporary who shared his respect for White, who passed away earlier this summer after battling cancer.
“I was very lucky to have someone like Fred and also Bob Hentzen of The Capital-Journal cover my games,’’ Berry said. “You couldn’t have asked for two greater guys to interview you after you played your heart out. I was very appreciative of Fred and all he did for me.’’
The inductee who was as responsible as anyone keeping games rolling smoothly was Wilson, a longtime umpire who first came to the state as a hot-shot recruit who played basketball for Kansas State. Wilson went on to umpire through four different decades. The manual he wrote for local American Legion umpires was incorporated at the national level.
“I had fun with the game,’’ said Wilson, “but I was serious too. Sometimes, though, you had to lighten up.’’
Like the time Wilson was working a Gopher League game at the very spot where he spoke Wednesday, the former SCABA diamonds.
“I crouched down and my pants ripped,’’ he recalled. “Before long, I had three mothers come down from the stands offering me safety pins.’’
Stories. Many were shared Wednesday reflecting the impressive history of baseball in Shawnee County.
DeMoss, an inductee who began playing for Negro League teams while in high school and went on to become the standout second baseman of his time, gave the class a feel that dates to almost the beginning of the 20th century.
Yet here we are in 2013 and baseball remains vibrant.
“I thank the inventors and the people that improved on it,’’ Dodson said. “Baseball has been total enjoyment for me.’’

Lee Dodson of the 1946 Chanute, KS Owls and Bill Virdon of the 1950 Independence Yankees are both very special individuals. I have got to know each of these fellows over the years and it was especially difficult to miss their induction ceremonies into halls of fame in two Kansas cities. It was very tough to ignore them at a high point in their lives when both of those guys came to Carthage when they hung my mug on the entrance to the Carthage ballpark in 1999. But, although I wasn’t in attendance of either of those events I’m especially proud of both those guys and want them to know it.

Predictions
Back in 2004 there was a KOM league reunion held at Carthage, MO and when a group of old ballplayers arrived on the scene at the baseball field there was a large number of young ballplayers who were touring the nation as the representatives of the American National team. Sam Dixon struck up a conversation with one of the leaders of that group and the gentleman told him to keep an eye on one player in particular. He was a lad from San Diego and Dixon promised to look out for his eventual rise to major league stardom. After that reunion concluded Dixon handed me the sheet of paper the coach of the team had given him and told me that I should keep it. Well, I looked at it again after nine years and started down the list. I got as far as “S” and recalled the guy with that initial for his last name and he never made it. I figured with just a few names left on the list that none of those guys made it. And, then I saw two fellows with the same last name... Upton. Quickly, it came to me that Melvin Emmanuel and Justin are the same guys who play for the Atlanta Braves. Most people recognize Melvin as “B. J.”
What struck me that morning, nine years ago in Carthage, was an exodus from the ball field when it was announced that a team of random drug testers were there to check the young American team. Those guys who exited the field came out on the sidewalk slamming down their equipment and crying like babies with the full knowledge that they hadn’t played by the rules and their time on the team was over. Now roll the clock forward just nine years and word came down today that some guys who didn’t play by the rules will get to sit it out for a while. Isn’t it great that “Time wounds all heels?” These guys are getting what they deserve but maybe they aren’t getting enough of what they deserve. When the rules set forth permanent banishment from the game for rule breaking then fairness will have a new meaning.

Conclusion:
In the last exciting edition of this newsletter it was mentioned that although all the copies of “Majoring in The Minors” were in the hands of others I still was able to share a copy that the late Tom Tarascio handed back prior to his death. I sent it along to a new friend in Pennsylvania who was coached by Jim McHugh former KOM leaguer for parts of four years.
Within days of sending along the big green book and a Mickey Mantle-Before The Glory copy I received this note. “Thank your for the book ‘Majoring in The Minors’ and ‘Mickey Mantle-Before the Glory’ and the Mantle pin. The books will be part of my summer reading. Maria McHugh donated the Jim McHugh-Jimmy Foxx letters to the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society in Hatboro, PA. Many years ago Jim Mc Hugh sent along a letter he had written to Jimmy Foxx when the Philadelphia A’s great Hall of Famer was ill. Foxx sent him a letter in return promising to get better in order to make his young fan happy. McHugh gave me that material a number of years ago. One day I took both of the letters and added a photo of Foxx and McHugh and sent it back to him with the explanation that it was such a great item he should share it with the family. I was pleased to learn it was now in the Philadelphia A’s Historical Society.

Oh, I’m not done. Last week I received a CD from Nick DeMaio of the 1952 Miami Eagles and a teammate of the late Jim McHugh. Nick is the “big guy” with Gunsmoke. That is a country-western band out of Darien, CT. In recent weeks his group appeared on the “Shot Gun Red” show on the cable channel, RFD. Sine I couldn’t that channel through my cable service Nick was kind enough to send me a CD. The music of Gunsmoke is of the genre and era when music was still be made and the lyrics weren’t “x” rated. Gosh, I love the past for a lot of reasons and one of the biggest was the music. Thanks again Nick for your kindness.

As I was finishing up this report a telephone call was received from a gentleman who remembered me from my last fling at theater. A few years back I was the voice of Lou Gehrig in a performance attended by few and appreciated by even fewer at a local playhouse. A group from that playhouse performed at one of our KOM league reunions and they were top flight in every aspect and may well have been the top group ever at any of the dozen or so reunions conducted. Anyway, a fellow who attended that performance was the most recent caller and told me he wanted to meet me for coffee. He said that he had recently picked up a baseball card of a former KOM leaguer and wanted to give it to me. So, a coffee date has been set for Thursday morning at a local grocery store. Oh, the baseball card he has of a former KOM leaguer is that of a guy he called “Mickey Mantle.” Has anyone ever heard of that name? I’ll let you know next time about the card and a little more about the guy who is purportedly on it.
HUNKY JESUS 2018 with the SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE !
Adda Dada reports there was a huge crowd at the HUNKY JESUS CONTEST with the SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE in GOLDEN GATE PARK on Easter Sunday.
The battle came down to very San Francisco issues: a bare-chested GUN CONTROL JESUS holding anti-gun signs, and, the winner, PUERTO RICO REFUGEE IMMIGRANT JESUS, who threw a slew of paper towels to the screaming and applauding crowd! The winner, Puerto Rico immigrant Rolando Rasco Saenz even had the support of a competitor, 'Activist Jesus' , Amy Farah Weiss!
Masochist Jesus got a jab from MC Sister Roma who said , "You'll be happy to know you didn't win." The crowd was wowed with 'Miracle Water-to-Wine Jesus' (Bruga of the Palace of Trash) who poured a huge goblet of water into a empty glass that had unnoticeable red food coloring ! 'Yoga Jesus' grabbed the mike for a yoga class with the routine ending: 'now lay prone dead , and, after three days, resurrect upward'.
Karen , the Balloon Babe from Cincinnati, won as 'Grandma Mary' in the Foxy Mary Contest , beating out 'VIRGIN MARY' a woman dressed as the famous non-alcoholic Bloody Mary drink !

Heres information about central florida broadcast stations
Broadcast Tower,WFTT-TV is the Telefutura affiliate for Tampa Bay, owned by Univision and operated by Entravision, owners of WVEA-TV. The station, which broadcasts on UHF channel 50, is based at WVEA's studios on Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa, and transmits from Riverview. WFTT can be seen on cable throughout the Bay Area on Bright House channel 5, and on Comcast in Sarasota County on channel 23.
With the completion of the 442.550 repeater in Riverview at 805ft in January, the western pointing antenna on the 442.825 repeater caused a expected overlap that was unnecessary. Since 442.550 now blankets Hillsborough County, we have as of April 11th taken the antenna off the west leg of the Pebbledale tower site at 800ft and moved it to the east leg of the tower. What does mean for users? The tower has a 7 foot wide face, which creates a null that is created behind the antenna. This null used to face a huge portion of Polk County. By moving this antenna to the east, the null is now facing essentially Brandon/Riverview, where 442.550 is now located at 805ft. So far we have gotten incredible results from users in eastern Polk County. Some users in Sebring reporting almost full scale signal, and mobile users with hand helds on 27 at 5 watts can use 442.825 now. None of this was previously possible. So with this move, expect to hear more Polk, Osceola and I-4 corridor area users making it into the network.
A nother tower WVEA (channel 62) is Tampa Bay, Florida's first Spanish-language TV station, which had its start in the early-1980s as low-powered W50AC ch.50, which offered programming from the Spanish International Network (SIN), the forerunner of today's Univision. In 1988, to make way for new HSN flagship WBHS (now WFTT-TV), the station relocated to channel 61 and became W61BL. In the mid-1990s, the station was re-called "WVEA-LP". In 2000, WVEA's parent company, Entravision, acquired Sarasota English independent WBSV channel 62, with the intent of moving the transmitter from Venice to the antenna farm at Riverview. WBSV signed on May 3, 1991 as the Sarasota area's own independent station, designed to compete against WWSB and the other stations in the Tampa Bay and nearby Ft. Myers markets. Licensed to Venice, Florida the call letters stood for Bradenton, Sarasota, Venice, the three cities it primarily served. WBSV had a variety of syndicated and local programming, plus infomercials and home shopping programs. early on, they also had its own newscast. But, WBSV was eternally in red ink, and relied more on home shopping and infomercials to keep the station afloat....
And then,WTVT, channel 13, is a television station in Tampa, Florida. It is an owned and operated station of the Fox Broadcasting Company, a subsdiary of the News Corporation. WTVT's studios are located in Tampa, and its transmitter is located in Riverview, Florida.
Overall the WUSF (89.7 FM) is an NPR-member radio station licensed to Tampa, Florida, USA. The station is currently owned by the University of South Florida. WUSF signed on in 1963, seven years after USF's founding in 1956.
WOPX channel 56 is a television station based in Orlando, Florida, USA. An affiliate of the ION Television network, it transmits its analog signal on UHF channel 56 and its digital signal on UHF channel 48, both from a transmitter located near Holopaw. The station signed on the air in 1986.
WIWA (1160 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a Spanish language Christian format. Licensed to St. Cloud, Florida, USA, it serves the greater Orlando area. The station is currently owned by Centro De La Familia Cristiana Inc.
WAFZ-FM (92.1 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a Regional Mexican format. Licensed to Immokalee, Florida, USA, the station is currently owned by Glades Media Company LLC. WAFZ's programming is also heard on WAFZ AM 1490 in Immokalee.
WTVY or WTVY News 4 is a CBS-affiliated television station broadcasting on channel 4 in Dothan, Alabama, owned by Gray Television. The station's signal, originating from a transmitter in Holmes County, Florida, reaches large portions of Alabama, Georgia and Florida. WTVY is also the designated CBS affiliate for the Panama City, Florida market, where Gray also owns that city's NBC affiliate, WJHG-TV. In exchange, WJHG is available in Dothan on cable since Dothan does not have its own NBC affiliate. In fact, WTVY's transmitter is located within the Panama City market. WTVY-DT uses digital subchannels to operate MyNetworkTV affiliate My 4 and CW affiliate Dothan's CW.
WJED (91.1 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a Christian radio format. Licensed to Dogwood Lakes Estate, Florida, USA. The station is currently owned by Bethany Bible College.
WTVJ, channel 6, is the NBC owned-and-operated television station for South Florida, licensed to Miami. Its analog transmitter is located in Redland. The station's digital transmitter is located near Dolphin Stadium in north Miami-Dade County. Owned by NBC Universal, the station is sister to South Florida's Telemundo owned-and-operated station, WSCV. The two share studios at Peacock Plaza in Miramar.
WOIR (1430 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a Spanish News/Talk format. Licensed to Homestead, Florida, USA, the station serves the Miami area. The station is currently owned by Amanecer Christian Network, Inc..
WTLH is a Fox television affiliate licensed to Bainbridge, Georgia and serves the Tallahassee, Florida television market. It broadcasts its analog signal on UHF channel 49 and its digital signal on UHF channel 50. The station began operations on November 25, 1989. Its transmitter is located in Metcalf, Georgia. The Station is owned by CP Media, LLC. The station runs a duopoly with WFXU, The CW station in Tallahassee. WTLH programming is also seen on a low-powered, Class-A repeater, WBVJ-LP channel 35 in Valdosta.
WTXL-TV is the ABC affiliate station for Tallahassee, Florida, Thomasville, Georgia, and Valdosta, Georgia, broadcasting on channel 27. The station is owned by Calkins Media, Inc., a Pennsylvania-based mass media company that owns several small newspapers in Pennsylvania and two other television stations: WWSB in Sarasota and WAAY-TV in Huntsville, Alabama. It was previously owned by Media Ventures Management, and operated by the Sinclair Broadcast Group pursuant to an outsourcing agreement (See: [1]), the first of its kind in the United States. This agreement merged virtually all of WTXL-TV's operations with that of Sinclair's NBC affiliate WTWC. Denis LeClair, General Manager of WTXL-TV and WBXT-TV at the time, was made General Manager for WTXL, WBXT and WTWC under this agreement. He would be followed by Chris Butterick and then Bob Franklin. Eventually, Kim Urbuteit (who was fired in May, 2007) would be named General Manager of WTXL only as Bob Franklin (now in Mobile, AL) oversaw WTWC. Gary Wordlaw is the current General Manager of WTXL-TV.
WFSU is the callsign (or variations thereon) for public radio stations operated by Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. WFSU also operates 3 radio stations that serve northern Florida: * WFSU-FM 88.9 FM: Tallahassee-based news/talk/public affairs station carrying several NPR programs and overnight BBC World Service programming. Also heard on these low-powered repeaters: * 97.1 - Carrabelle * 106.1 - Marianna * 96.7 - Apalachicola * 93.7 - Downtown Tallahassee (necessary because the main WFSU transmitter must conform its signal to protect WTSU in Troy, Alabama) * WFSQ-FM 91.5 FM: Tallahassee-based classical music station. WESH is the NBC affiliate in Orlando, Florida. It is licensed to Daytona Beach, with studio facilities in Winter Park. It transmits its analog signal on VHF channel 2 and its digital signal on VHF channel 11, when viewed over the air PSIP will display 2.1 for WESH DT and 2.2 for WESH Weather Plus. It is currently owned by Hearst-Argyle Television along with the area's CW affiliate, WKCF. WESH's transmitter is located in Orange City, Florida. The tower is the tallest man-made structure in Florida, at 1,740 feet (530 m). The station also serves as the default NBC affiliate for the Gainesville market, and can be seen on the fringes of the Tampa Bay and Jacksonville markets. WESH was the first station in Orlando to carry an on-site RADAR facility, SuperDoppler 2 as opposed to relying on National Weather Service RADARs. WOMX is a radio station located in the Orlando, Florida area and broadcasts at 105.1. WOMX 105.1 plays the "Best MIX of the 80s, 90s and Today," though the station programming focuses mostly on rock and modern rock music from the 90's and 2000's. Every Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., Mix 105.1 presents Friday Night 80's. The "Saturday Night Party MIX" airs every Saturday night from 7 p.m. to midnight. The "Saturday Night Party MIX" replaced the Orlando heritage show "Seventies Saturday Night" in 2005.
WOTF-TV Channel 43 is the TeleFutura station serving the Orlando/Daytona Beach/Melbourne, Florida television market. It broadcasts its analog signal on UHF channel 35, and its digital signal on UHF channel 22. Its transmitter is located in Bithlo, Florida. Its Digital TV transmitter has a power of 1,000 kW. Its Analog TV transmitter has a power of 2,570 kW. WOFL and sister station WTVT of the bordering Tampa market commonly share reporters and footage, as other station groups do.
WFTV channel 9 is a television station based in Orlando, Florida, affiliated with the ABC network. It transmits its analog signal on VHF channel 9 from a transmitter located in Bithlo, Florida, and its digital signal on UHF channel 39 from a transmitter located in Christmas, Florida. WRBW-TV is the MyNetworkTV owned and operated station serving the Orlando/Daytona Beach/Melbourne, Florida television market. It is owned by the Fox Television Stations Group, along with Fox station WOFL Channel 35. Known on-air as "My65", the station offers sitcoms, cartoons, court shows, and talk/reality shows. Its transmitter is located in Christmas, Florida.
WNTF (1580 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a News Talk Information format. Licensed to Bithlo, Florida, USA, it serves the Orlando area. The station is currently owned by Rama Communications, Inc.
WBCC is an educational television station serving the Orlando television market. It broadcasts on UHF channel 68, with a digital signal on channel 30. It is one of the Orlando market's PBS member stations. WBCC's digital signal, on channel 30, offers programming from the University of Central Florida (channel 68.2) and BPS-TV from Brevard Public Schools (channel 68.3), in addition to WBCC's standard programming.

WXPX is a television station licensed to Bradenton, Florida. Operating on channel 66, it is an ION Television affiliate, owned and operated by ION Media Networks (formerly Paxson Communications), which has owned the station since its founding in 1994. Current programming on WXPX is virtually the same as other ION affiliates -- infomercials throughout the day and during the overnights, plus ION programming in the evenings. WXPX also shows Tampa Bay Lightning hockey, Orlando Magic basketball, some college football and Tampa Bay Rays baseball, though most of these games are in the evenings only, as WXPX tend to reserve non-prime-time hours for infomercials. Rays games air in high definition on WXPX in the 720p format, the same format as FSN Florida, the producers of the games (See: [1]). A proposed rebrand for the medical newsletter "Emergency Medicine Reports". While it outperformed all other options in focus tests, management ignored the results and chose to stick closer to their old logo.
It's been reported that the 482 Bury-Todmorden service is to be cut back to Bury-Bacup from the end of January 2017. If so, it will mark the end of a long era of Rossendale Transport providing a trans-Pennine link between Todmorden and Rossendale. This will also have been the last Monday of the service.
PO53OBT passes under the Manchester Victoria-Bradford railway line as it departs Todmorden bus station.

Anyone curious as to what possibly could be left to write about, regarding the KOM league, there are two items in this week’s report One contains old news and the other a current event.

Over the course of documenting the history of KOM league players there are some names that have a question mark beside them. In those instances the old batboy is relatively sure he has found the former player but has no conclusive evidence that would stand up in court.
A former player meeting those criteria was a short-term pitcher for the Bartlesville Oilers that was identified as Joseph Radamacher. Many trips have been made through Ancestry.com files and about a half dozen years ago it was believed the fellow was Joseph John Rademacher Jr. of Escanaba, Michigan. That name went on the KOM database with a question mark attached thereto.
In the past week a birth announcement was found in the January 3, 1928 Escanaba Daily Press that Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rademacher of Escanaba had given birth to a 10-pound boy the previous day.
There were numerous references to Joseph Jr. as he made his way through grade and high school. He attended St. Joseph’s High School in Escanaba. The Escanaba Daily Press reported on December 17, 1946 that Joseph Jr. had been accepted to attend the Bartow, Florida baseball school from January 6 through February 13, 1947. By January 27, 1947 the Escanaba newspaper reported Rademacher had been tagged as a youngster with talent and was offered a contract by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The article stated he had been given the choice of signing a Class B or C contract and chose the lower classification in order better himself in a career he envisioned would put him in the major leagues later on.
After extensive research all that could be found, for 1947, was his brief appearance with the Bartlesville Oilers.
In a May 18, 1948 article a headline in the Escanaba Daily Press stated “Ford River Hurler Wins First Game in Kentucky: Will Stay.” The article that followed read “Joseph Rademacher Jr. of Ford River, who left a month ago to play baseball with the Jenkins, KY team, has informed friends here that he intends to stay. He pitched the season opener for Jenkins a few days ago and the team won.”
It appears that the stay at Jenkins, in the Mountain States league, was brief for he was back in Michigan for most of the summer of 1948 pitching for Channing, a semi-pro team, in the Northern Wisconsin-Michigan league.
At the start of the 1949 season Rademacher was in the Blue Ridge league playing for the Elkin Blanketeers. He posted a 2-4 record in 11 mound appearances and left that team prior to mid-July. I suspect he was unconditionally released for he was free to try out for another team
On July 14, 1949 the Chicago White Sox held a tryout camp where three boys from Escanaba attended. Of the three only Rademacher made an impression. There were “rave” comments about him in the press and it stated the 6’ 2” 195 pounder had the appearance of the making of a good major league pitcher. The news coming from that tryout was the White Sox signed him for one year and that he would report, in the spring of 1950 to their minor league training facility in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The word was that when he made it in that organization he would be assigned to the Class C Superior club in the Northern league. Nothing indicates that he played in 1950 but records do show that he was in the Korean War by 1951.
A number of articles, bearing his name, appeared in the Escanaba Daily Press, over the years. He was active in civic affairs and even in building baseball fields for youngsters in his home town. His occupation appeared in city directories as a sheet metal worker.
Joseph John Rademacher died October 25, 2011 in his native hometown. In searching other files something was found that I hadn’t expected. On a family site was his photo which was probably taken when he was in his 60’s. www.flickr.com/photos/60428361@N07/48317007492/
A comment was posted on the site where the photo was found and possibly a member of the family will be in touch. No baseball record book shows he ever played in the Mountain States or KOM leagues and its possible no one in his family ever knew about it either. By the time he was married, in 1949, his baseball days were over and his first child was not born until 1957.

He had a bout with champion, Floyd Patterson, after the Olympics and got his bell rung. Now, if you think I’m going to tell you Pete and Joseph Rademacher were brothers, you would be incorrect. Were they kin in any manner? That I don’t know as the boxing Rademacher was from the State of Washington. But, if they were kin it will probably take me another 25 years to determine. Just as it has taken that long to document some aspects of the life of Joseph John Rademacher.

During this past week an e-mail was received from the daughter of Ray Etzel who pitched for the Chanute, Kansas Athletics in 1946. Etzel was a native Topekan and lived there until his passing in May of 2006. My wife got to know his wife while working at the VA Hospital in Topeka but neither realized a common link until they met at a KOM league reunion a number of years later. Since the death of her mother and dad, Sharon has kept in touch with the KOM league news through the Flash Reports. Here is what she shared. “Hi John: We enjoyed your photos of the deer. You probably already know this, but Bob Speake is being inducted into the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame tonight. I’m sending a link to the article in today’s Topeka Capital-Journal.”

After opening the aforementioned link I sent the following note to Bob and Joan Speake. “I got a notice on the e-mail a few minutes ago about Bob being inducted into the Shawnee County Ball Hall of Fame tonight. I enjoyed the article except for the part where the writer had Bob playing for Joplin in the KOM league. Hope you are all doing well.”
Upon arising from a night of not much sleep I was made to feel better by this note from Joan Speake. “Haven't been on the computer for a couple of days but was just sitting down to write you and tell you a woman sent Bob a note saying she had sent you a link so you could see the article. There WERE a few mistakes, the first one being Joplin instead of Carthage!! The man was very nice and he and Bob had a long time together here and he was taping their conversation so how he got Joplin I don't know. Also, we have 8 grandchildren, not only 4 and Bob has never called me Joanie ...ever! His family does and all my friends in Springfield but not here because he never called me that and so our friends here always called me Joan. So another ? as to where Joanie came from? Outside of that, the rest of the article was very good, I thought. The event is a fund raiser for youth baseball in Topeka and there was a pretty good turnout.
We are doing ok. Bob is due to have cataract surgery soon, have to get that set up. We have the consultation date set. He has a pace maker now so he is getting close to being the bionic( is that the word?) man.
Hope you both are doing well and still keeping up with those cute little ones. We now have 4 great grandsons and expecting another boy in Jan. which will make 5 under the age of 4. They all live here and pretty close to us which is nice.
We miss the days of the Reunions but could not keep up with it now. Bob isn't much of a traveler any more but lots of good memories. We keep in touch with Frank Hungerford some and Paul Nichols occasionally since they were school buddies of ours and I think Barb and Gale Wade are coming through some time this year but I hope they aren't traveling in this hot weather! 114 heat index today!! It was my intention to share the Topeka Capital Journal article and then point out the factual errors as it pertained to the KOM league. But, Joan took care of that in her note. In all deference to sportswriters of 2019 it is only fair to point out what transpired in 1949 is now ancient history. However, as the unofficial historian of the KOM league it does seem incumbent upon me to point out obvious errors. It could be that in another few years someone will write about the KOM league and show Joplin as a member of it with Bob Speake being their first baseman. That would cause old Carthage Cub fans to roll over in whatever place they might be by that time.

Sluggers capable of chasing Mickey Mantle for a league home run title certainly possess some prodigious power.
Bob Speake, however, used more than just his bat to challenge the Yankees icon. He also engaged the Mick in foot races.
Those skills eventually helped Speake reach the major leagues. On Tuesday, the longtime Topeka resident will be inducted into the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame during a 5:30 p.m. banquet at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center.
While playing for Joplin in the KOM League as a Class D player in 1949, Speake slugged 14 homers to seven for Mantle, who played for Independence. A year later, both played in Topeka while in the Class C Western Association. Mantle flexed his power and topped Speake in homers that year.
However, a different pregame exhibition — this was the minors, after all — is what Speake, 89, remembers best.
First, a 60-yard dash was contested down the baseline.
“Zoom,″ Speake recalled, “I remember seeing that No. 7 on his back. So, he starts giving me the what-for and I told him, ‘I’ll get you on the next one.’ ″
That contest had Speake running from second base to home; Mantle from home to second. The first to get to his destination, running the same distance, prevailed.
“Well, I had a crossover technique in running the bases,″ Speake recalled. “Of course, he’s starting at home plate with a dead start. I’m pushing off the bag. So, I won and I told him, ‘That one’s for you.’ ″
Baseball would not become the kind of career bonanza for Speake that it was for Mantle. But when he retired after the 1959 season, Speake leveraged his time in the game.
As one of the founding executives of American Investors Life, Topeka has been home to Speake. He and his wife, Joanie, raised three children here. They have four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Speake learned all he could about the all-important marketing arm of business when he teamed with other businessmen in his hometown of Springfield, Mo. Automatic pinsetters had just been introduced to bowling centers and the group wanted to capitalize on what was then a growing sport.
“I said, ‘Now, you guys are all businessmen. If you want to talk baseball I can talk all night. But if you want to talk business, talk slow,’ ″ Speake recalled.
“Baseball gave me a front relating to people. Business is all about marketing. My time in the bowling business gave me an education, because when I went into starting the (insurance) company, I could contribute.″
The baseball stories Speake shares to this day are wonderful, beginning with the contests against Mantle after growing up in the same region of the country at the same time.
Both were talented, though the appraisals they received from big-league scouts grew clear one day when both were in line for their Army physicals.
“Mickey had a briefcase and I didn’t have anything,″ Speake said. “I went through, and he went back to New York.″
The Army stint kept Speake out of professional baseball for two years. While training at Fort Riley, Speake played 8-man football for the base team, a natural fit since that sport was his first love and one he played collegiately for one season at what is now Missouri State. While overseas, Speake played baseball for his base team.
Eventually, Speake played all or part of nine professional seasons.
When he got his first crack at the majors in 1955 with the Chicago Cubs, he was asked by manager Stan Hack if he ever played outfield. Hank Sauer, the 1952 MVP of the National League, was out and a replacement was needed. Speake, a first baseman, recognized the opportunity.
“I played outfield one game in the service, but I wasn’t lying to him,″ Speake said. “We were in Brooklyn and after that game I played left field. I went to the public library and picked out books on playing the outfield. So, I became an outfielder. You don’t say no.″
The Cubs were glad he didn’t. That May, Speake slammed 10 home runs, though the left-handed pull hitter was not well-suited for the prevailing wind in Wrigley Field.
Speake eventually bounced between the big leagues and Triple A, hitting .256 at all levels with 137 home runs. During the era in which he played, Speake also saw first-hand the Hall of Fame impact Jackie Robinson had breaking the color barrier.
With the Cubs, Speake played with Ernie Banks. After he was traded to the Giants, he played with Willie Mays. As one of the original San Francisco Giants, the prospect of playing regularly seemed promising — until the Giants brought in Bill White, Orlando Cepeda and Willie McCovey as first basemen.
“So, my time with the Giants (81 games in 1958 and ’59) is because the Jackie Robinson experiment was successful,″ Speake said. “Now, not successful from my perspective, but for the good of the game. The writing was on the wall.″
As a successful businessman who was one of the original investors in the diamonds that have long housed the Ken Berry League, Speake still made the most of his baseball career. And he made far more than the $400 bonus he received to sign with the Cubs organization and the $10,000 stipulated in his top big-league contract.
“Again, baseball was my front,″ Speake said. “I don’t pretend to be any more than a baseball player with a few good games. My dad, when I signed my first contract, said, ‘Boy, I want to tell you one thing. Always remember, whatever your dream is, there’s always room at the top.’ ″
Eventually, Speake ascended to that very spot, as a businessman.

One other item catching my eye was Joan Speake’s mention of Barbara and Gale Wade coming this way in the near future. They have to pass through Columbia, Mo. on their way to Topeka and eventually Bremerton, Washington. In times past the Wade’s have called my wife and I and we have met at a local eatery to savor some “great” food such as Scorned Woman hot sauce. Gale loves the tongue scorching, belly burning elixir. When I know his automobile will be headed west on I-70 I’ll be sure to have some on hand and we can douse or breakfast eggs or lunch barbecue with it.
Joan mentioned the past reunions in her note and stated she missed them but it wouldn’t be likely they could attend any if they were held. It dawned on me that the last one was held 11 years ago and if we scheduled one now it would be tough to find enough attendees to fill a telephone booth. But, in the era of cell phones it would be tougher to find a telephone booth than in locating enough people to fill it.

On Saturday 11 November, between 300,000 and 800,000 protesters marched from London's Hyde Park to the US Embassy in solidarity with Palestinians. Britain's Home Secretary Suella Braverman had insisted a few days earlier that all those marching to call for a ceasefire, compassion and justice were hate marchers and she pressured the police to ban it. Fortunately, common sense and the law prevailed, and the march was allowed to go ahead.
It was not just a reaction to the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza, the escalating death toll and the blockade of essential supplies to the 2.3 million Palestinians living in the city and the surrounding strip.
It was also a determination to see an end to -

1) An end to Palestinian suffering from 75 years of Israeli occupation. The Israeli occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip since 1967 is officially recognised by the United Nations and most of the world despite the fact that the occupation is often ignored or sometimes even denied by Western media. As Amnesty International reports Israeli occupation has resulted in "systematic human rights violations against Palestinians living there."

2) An end to Palestinians living under a highly restrictive Apartheid regime as recognised by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and War on Want. Across the West Bank Palestinians are banned from driving on numerous roads that cross the region and as War on Want explains "Jewish Israelis and Palestinians are treated differently in almost every aspect of life: housing, education, health, employment, family life, residence and freedom of movement. Dozens of Israeli laws and policies institutionalise this prevailing system of racial discrimination and domination."

3) An end to restrictions on movement. Across the West Bank there are some 650 Israeli military checkpoints through which only some Palestinians are allowed to pass, often with humiliating questioning and delays, so that they can travel to other towns whether to visit families, seeking medical treatment or for any other reason. In Gaza, travel is even more difficult and only a tiny minority with work permits have been allowed to cross the border - the rest have to remain in what is often described as the world's largest open air prison - the densely populated Gaza strip housing some 2.3 million people.

4) The never ending process of Israeli expansion across Palestinian land, including the demolition of 55,000 Palestinian homes since 1967, occurring on a near monthly basis as well as the cutting down of fields of olive trees and the ploughing up of Palestinian farms to make room for yet more illegal settlements subsidised by the Israeli government.
These settlements are illegal under international law, which rightly recognises the 1967 border. However, since 1967, Israel has constructed 250 of them across the West Bank in which over 633,000 Israelis live in subsidised and often luxurious housing with swimming pools and manicured lawns, an unimaginable privilege to the vast majority of Palestinians.

5) Never ending acts of settler terrorism against Palestinians. Western media rightly condemns occasional Palestinian attacks on Israeli civilians, including the appalling atrocities committed by Hamas on 7 October. However, for years illegal Israeli settlers in the West Bank have staged attacks against Palestinians, sometimes motivated sheerly by hatred, but often by the desire to inflict terror and to ethnically cleanse an area. The most recent incident was an attack on Wednesday 11 October in which masked settlers killed three Palestinian villagers and then killed a Palestinian father and son attending the funeral the next day.

6) The division of Palestinian land by the separation wall. The 708 km Separation Wall, completed in 2005, was supposedly built to protect Israel from any Palestinians that might be able to enter the country without permission, but 85% of it runs up to 18 km inside the internationally recognised 1967 boundary ("Green Line"), frequently dividing Palestinians villagers from their farmland as well as running through the middle of farms and dividing arable land from key water supplies.
Some 10% of the West Bank now lies between the wall and the 1967 border, an area into which everyone, except Palestinians, is allowed entry. Not surprisingly, the International Court of Justice has issued an advisory opinion that the separation wall is a contravention of international law and in 2003 the UN General Assembly passed a resolution demanding its removal by 144 votes to just 4. Analysts also fear that the wall acts as a de facto annexation of all the Palestinian land that lies to the west of it.

7) The myth of Palestinian rejectionism. Western mainstream media usually maintains falsely that it is Palestinians that have constantly rejected a two-state solution, whereas the opposite is the case. Arab states and the Palestinians have frequently made clear their willingness to negotiate a future two-state solution on the basis of the 1967 frontiers, while Israel is committed to preventing any such solution and continuing its territorial expansion.
As early as 1976, Egypt, Syria and Jordan presented a two-state solution resolution to the UN Security Council based on the 1967 Green Line (in accordance with the international consensus) but it was vetoed outright by the United States, even though Washington at the time publicly acknowledged the illegality of all Israeli settlements across the Palestinian West Bank.
The same happened again in 1980.
Later in 1988, the PLO put forward their position in a declaration by the Palestinian National Council calling for a Palestinian state alongside Israel with guarantees of security to both countries. However in May 1989, Israel's Likud-Labour coalition government made it crystal clear that they would not accept an "additional" Palestinian state between Jordan and Israel, regardless of what Jordanians, Palestinians or the rest of the world might think. The founding charter of Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party still "flatly rejects the establishment of a Palestinian state west of the Jordan river."
8) The frequent killing by Israeli security forces of peaceful protesters, women, children, journalists and medics, including the assassination of renowned Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh in May last year. In the nine months of 2023 prior to 7 October, 248 Palestinians, 40 of them children, had been killed by Israeli soldiers, but these deaths attracted almost no attention in the Western media. Palestinian lives have always been very cheap.

9) The current refusal of Israel to allow any journalists into the Gaza Strip so they can see and report on, obviously at their own risk, the destruction and casualties and suffering of the civilian population.
10) An end to "administrative detentions" across the West Bank under which thousands of Palestinians have been detained without any right to be told under what charges they are being held, let alone any right to a free trial. As the Israeli human rights organisation B'Tselem explains
"Administrative detention is incarceration without trial or charge, alleging that a person plans to commit a future offense. It has no time limit, and the evidence on which it is based is not disclosed. Israel employs this measure extensively and routinely, and has used it to hold thousands of Palestinians for lengthy periods of time. While detention orders are formally reviewed, this is merely a semblance of judicial oversight, as detainees cannot reasonably mount a defense against undisclosed allegations. Nevertheless, courts uphold the vast majority of orders."

11) An end to Israeli soldiers controlling access to and frequently preventing Muslims from visiting the Al Aqsa Mosque in Israeli occupied East Jerusalem [Al Quds], considered the third holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina. On several occasions, Israeli troops and/or police have also attacked worshippers using batons, stun grenades and tear gas, igniting understandable anger across the Islamic World. Radical Israeli settlers also sometimes enter under the protection of Israeli security forces and some also perform Jewish rituals in contravention of current agreements about non-Muslims being allowed in, but only as visitors.
