So today we’re ten days into the build (halfway through week two if you will) and it’s fair to say the kitchen is unrecognisable. Largely because there is no kitchen any more.
The whole structure has been razed to the ground. The walls are down and all the bricks (save for a few) and timber are skipped ready for removal from site. The concrete slab that formed the floor of the old kitchen and bathroom has been broken up and is also in the skip. The garden wall is half demolished.
In breaking up the concrete slab, we’ve been able to see how deep the foundations of the party wall are. We had no idea what to expect. The Victorians were often a bit slapdash when building the mass housing of their day and you often find that the foundations of Victorian terraces are only a few bricks deep. However, it seems the Edwardians are a bit more discerning and we’ve got about 60cm of wall below ground. Whether this is enough to satisfy the twin gods of the structural engineer and building control remains to be seen, but it’s a good sign.
