The seal actually gets removed after removing the nylon gear. Seems obvious now, but with the trouble I had getting the gear out, I was thinking (wrongly) that maybe the seal should come loose before the gear would come out. My bad.
To be clear - you do not even need to remove the seal for cleaning and lubing the innards.
But when removing the seal, start with a small screwdriver and carefully pry away from housing evenly all the way around. Use a thin-bladed screwdriver to begin so that you get it all the way underneath the seal, not just the outer edge of it. Pry CAREFULLY so as not to break the thin edge of the nylon housing. More pressure can be used where the housing is reinforced.
Then switch up to a larger screwdriver and continue working the seal out of the housing.

1. converted to grey scale then back to RGB to remove any color casts.
2. tightened levels with a levels adjustment
3. applied dust and scratches filter then went back in the histories and used the history brush to selectively clean up the dust in the image
4. used the healing brush and the clone tool on the bigger dust, the "x"
5. extended the wall on the right by coping parts of the wall and using the cloning tool to add some variation
6. did the same on the left wall.
7. added a layer , with the brush tool set to scatter, "ivy" shape, and color variation "hue" fade between a light grey foreground and a darker grey background color, added some ivy leaves to the left bush.

After the template and fabric have cooled, remove the template and press the edges of the appliqué if necessary.
