In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The Virginia Beach Fraternal Order of Police hosts this annual memorial service as a tribute to all local law enforcement officers that have died in the line of duty in service to the City of Virginia Beach.
Reminder: Flags should be flown at half-staff on May 15th
This tribute to American law enforcement officers is part of the historic crime bill that President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994. At the request of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Public Law 103-322 designates Peace Officers Memorial Day as one of only two days each year during which government agencies, businesses and residents are to fly their U.S. flags at half-staff.
“Just as we honor those who died in military service each Memorial Day, our nation pauses each May 15th to show its appreciation for the more than 20,000 men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy here at home,” said Craig W. Floyd, Memorial Fund Chairman and CEO. “Lowering flags to half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day is also a way to remember the family members, friends and colleagues these brave American heroes left behind.”

Aberfan was a former coal mining village in the Taff Valley in Wales, United Kingdom, 4 miles (6 km) south of the town of Merthyr Tydfil,
On 21 October 1966, it became known for the Aberfan disaster, when a colliery spoil tip (Slag heap") collapsed into homes and a school, killing 116 children and 28 adults.

I was just looking back at some pictures and came across this picture in Rayleigh Cemetery in February.
As time passes, we change. What was once a given will no longer be so in the future. Only the remembrance remains in our thoughts.
Mikey just turned 18 and I took him to the DMV today for his road test. Remember when you got your license to freedom?
Does anyone besides myself remember relatives using these in the late 40's and early 50? Seems they are 40ish items. Seen at the Stancil Oil Co. Country Store.

Our friend Horst(*hb19) passed away a year and a day ago. From comments that I still am reading throughout Flickr, he remains close to the many hearts he touched. I know Roswitha and Neil must feel comforted by knowing how much Horst meant to so many of us, and how much he is still missed.

Here is Greg's update from 7 hours ago (about 1:30 a.m. May 12):
"Jim made some more progress today! She started off saying the usual "not much change from yesterday", and that they were waiting for him to get stronger, etc., but then she mentioned that he was listening to some music on a radio and seemed to be liking it and that she noticed his oxygen levels rising when he seemed to be liking a song. So I said "listening to music? you mean he's awake?" and she said "well yes, he was awake and had his eyes open, but he's on heavy-duty drugs all the same, and was kind of glazed over, and not really, you know, with it", kind of pretty spaced out I guess. But she said they turned up his own lung's participation to 55% and then up to 60%, but then she said that got a bit too much for him so they turned it back down to 55%. Wow, does that ever sound like things are going well to me!
I told her what Connie (kaleidoscope) said, which interested her, and I told her what you said Chris, and she was so glad to hear it, and I told her about the 2 pictures you posted of your schoolchildren wishing Jim well and holding up one of Jim's eagle pics that he had sent them (one of my favourite eagle photos of his) Trish, and she was really glad to hear about that, and told me some of the stuff about them that Jim had already told me. I mentioned a few more comments and said that a lot of people were saying a lot of nice things, and she said to please thank everyone so much!
Well that's about it I think - all I can remember right now anyway. So it's a good day for us all! Yay! But of course especially Yay that it was a good day for Jim!!

Oh yeah, she said she was talking with one of her sister-in-laws who also told her that a lot of people were saying a lot of nice things, and she managed to get on a computer somewhere briefly and was able to read some of the comments herself, and said she'd try and do that again tomorrow."

EDIT, May 14, 12:34 pm--Here is Greg's latest, FABULOUS update from 12 hours ago:
"Ok everybody, Linda just called with her update on Jim for today, and it's a good one! Today Jim was breathing with his own lung for 100% of the effort! They were still supplementing his oxygen with the respirator, but it was only playing a supporting role, while his own lung was in control of the main process! This is great news! And he wasn't spaced out today, but was coherent, although he couldn't speak. With the help of felt letters that Linda provided for him, he was asking her about things back home in Campbell River. She said it was like having Jim back again! She's needless to say really happy about his progress!
They preformed another procedure today called a tracheotomy, which is where they make a hole in the neck and insert a tube - well here's an explanation - "Tracheostomy (sometimes called tracheotomy) is the creation of an opening directly into the trachea (windpipe) in the neck for the purpose of assisting breathing. While tracheotomy used to be done as an emergency, it is now done more on an elective basis to protect the airway, better clean the airway and to provide more oxygen to the lungs." "A tracheostomy is advisable for patients who have been on a ventilator for over 5-7 days. A tracheostomy helps in suctioning of secretions, increased delivery of air to the lungs, prevention of aspiration in case the patient vomits and prevention of complications associated with endotracheal tubes through the mouth." "It is not possible to talk with a tracheostomy tube in place as air is bypassed from the voice box." "As the patient recovers, the tracheostomy tube may be changed at the bedside into a smaller size and eventually removed. The opening in the neck closes by itself in about a week." So it's just a temporary thing. Linda said that this procedure was one of the main things that helped him to be able to breathe 100% with his own lung.
So anyway, I asked her whether he was still listening to the music on the radio today, and she said that there was too much noise from some machinery going on today, but that she hoped that that would recommence tomorrow. I asked her if she knew what Jim's favourite song might be, as requested by Mim and Kathy and Darlene, and she mentioned "White Wedding" by Billy Idol, but said that that wouldn't be her choice, as it used to drive her crazy when he used to play it a lot as it used to be played a lot somewhere where he was working - something to do with fishing. :)
So again she thanks everyone for their great support, and says she hopes there'll be more good news tomorrow!

So it's only the 3rd week of school and I wanna go back on vacation! The closest thing I have to going on vacation right now is taking a look back at my vacation pictures, which kinda makes it worse since it makes me wanna go on vacation more!!
And I wish I lived near the sea so I can take more seaside sunrise/sunset pictures.... actually maybe a freshwater lake would be better cause saltwater kills electronics... lol

1. I'm a vegetarian... and I don't like vegetables. I'll eat some (bean sprouts, carrots, cucumber, corn, lettuce that's not shredded, sometimes tomatoes and spinach) but I hate everything else and have to force whatever I can down and try not to gag.
2. I cried when I looked up Carl Sagan on Wikipedia and found out he was dead.
3. I passionately hate Stephen Harper, as well as several other Canadian politicians. If Harper or someone like him still "runs" the country by the time I finish my undergrad, I plan to emigrate.
4. I love NYC!
5. I'm short. Somewhere around 5' or 5'1"... my goal is to grow above 5'3", but it's starting to seem unlikely. My tripod is taller than me.
6. Despite the fact that my mom is the owner of a Spa/Salon and I live above it, I haven't had nail polish on since my grade 8 graduation... it was pale pink and barely noticeable.
7. goes along with 6... I am not a girly girl. I'm becoming more okay with shopping for clothes, but I hate chick flick romance movies such as Dear John. I also don't like romance novels.
8. No matter how much sunscreen I put on, I still seem to get really tanned in the summer. People mistake me for being Indian/ Italian/ Middle Eastern... usually Italian. I'm actually a mix of British, Scottish and Irish.
9. The string on my finger was insanely difficult to tie on.
10. I feel really nervous walking around with a camera hanging from my neck strap. I'm not afraid that someone's going to steal it, I'm terrified the strap will break and my camera will fall.
Since I don't have many flickr friends, I'm just going to tag my mutual contacts :).

A magnificent memorial to a lady in Killarney Cemetery to end our week. The crucifix set in the archway is very impressive and the gravestone in the well tended plot would seem to suggest that the lady was much loved and deeply missed. I hope that it looks as well tended and cared for today?

Taken yesterday at a memorial site for September 11.
I made a consious effort to not watch the news or any of the special broadcasts about that terrible day.
However I did want to devote some part of my day to remember.
We were the only ones here. It was quiet and peaceful.
