Remembering TĹŤhoku
4 years after the 2011 TĹŤhoku earthquake and tsunami , most areas of Rikuzentakata coastal side are still an empty land with sand factories operating day and night for the redevelopment progress of the city.
In years to come, Rikuzentakata will be a totally new city.
Today 11 March 2015, marks the 4th commemoration year of this tragic event.
Remembering TĹŤhoku is my documentary project in Autumn 2014 with intention to show the after effects, post event scenes and redevelopment progress in TĹŤhoku coastal cities of Kamaishi, Rikuzentakata and Yuriage.

Each Eve of Mother's Day, I used to sneak out of the house and drive to the nearest grocery store before closing time. I'd buy her a card, balloons and a blooming azalea. I'd sign the card and leave all three on top of the dining table. So, when they got up Mother's Day morning, her presents were already waiting for her. Then we would go out for a brunch or dinner, whichever she preferred.My folks were retired school teachers so they have always been early risers even after retirement. I sure miss those days.
This very beautiful lady hugged me and kissed my forehead when I took her photo. She also yelled "Thank You!" (yes, in English) when I grinned at her, saying: "The pleasure was all mine!"
This MCW Metroliner now lives at Jurby in the Isle of Man. It began life as E99 AAK, operated by Yorkshire Traction. Now it is painted in the livery of National Express Rapide, a network of express coach services with extras like on-board drinks and snacks, served by stewards or stewardesses, who doubled as drivers in some cases.
... where Los Angeles was obscured in a perpetual nighttime rain illuminated by the vast city?
I think I found that Los Angeles this night. You can even see that the top of the AON building in the middle distance is obscured by the bottom of the rain clouds. Just bring on the advertising blimps and flying cars!
This is another vertical stitched photo (3 images) taken with my Nikon P6000 point & shoot. I was on another one of the skywalks over Flower Street in the Financial District. I got fairly wet taking this. Fortunately, the camera is fine.

Abner Doubleday didn't invent baseball. He did however serve as second in command under Major Robert Anderson at Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. On the morning of April 12, 1861 the Confederates opened fire on the fort and the American Civil War began. Anderson selected Doubleday to fire the first shot of the Union response. Doubleday fought throughout the war rising to the rank of major general. Years later he wrote this fascinating book about his command of Ft. Moultrie and the eventual fall of Fort Sumter.
I purchased the pewter parrot artillery and the book on a visit to the fort in 1982. The "minie" balls are authentic.

Until today, I had not seen Marietta in about a year and a half, but she told me she would have some free time over Thanksgiving and would be available for a photoshoot. We scheduled it for 9:30 this morning, but a communication error and an ensuing comedy of errors forced a delay of about four hours. But I didn't mind, as it was warmer by that time anyway; besides, I had been wanting to do another shoot with her ever since our last one, and I figured that if I could wait as long as I already had, an extra few hours wouldn't matter.
I came home with 171 new images of her, most of which she enthusiastically told me she liked. This one was among the last I took today, and it was just about worth the whole shoot all by itself. Marietta's magnificent but somewhat unruly tresses are an interesting subject in their own right, and I loved the way I captured them here. She was backlit (obviously), and I had her hold a small reflector off to camera right. This result already rivals the Mona Lisa as my favorite portrait of my friend, and this shoot proved to be well worth the wait, although I hope it won't be quite as long before I have my next one with her.
About 18 months ago I bought the Olloclip 3-in-1 lens, and sometimes I actually remember to use it. It clips on the corner of your iPhone, offering macro, wide angle and fisheye lenses. I also bought the 2X Telephoto with polarizing filter, and a case which has the corner flip up so you can slip the lens on. It all fits in one pocket with the phone (at least the iPhone 5S, I haven't tried that with the 6+ yet).
The lenses run about $70, making the 3-in-1 under $25 per lens, and they come with lens covers and soft bags so you can put them in your pockets.. I was able to pick up the telephoto with the flip-up hard case for $99. There are also versions designed for several Android phones.
You can't expect DSLR-quality from a $25-70 lens, but having the ability to extend the usable range of your cell phone's camera can offer you perspectives and images not possible any other way.
Many of the lenses are unsharp, especially towards the corners. A fisheye in general distorts a scene. This one is blurry around the edge of the circle, and the image circle extends past the edge of the sensor. This is actually a good decision, since that maximizes the len's use of the rectangular sensor. The phone has trouble focusing with the macro on, even when using the Olloclip app, and the depth of field is very shallow, so small movements in the phone or subject make it even harder, so you may end up taking several photos to get a sharp one with the focus where you want it.. But again, to be able to extend the phone's capabilities at all and quickly capture shots not practical any other way, I find the macro and fisheye lenses particularly useful. One of these days I'll post a thorough review to my blog with lots of sample images.
I recently bought the equivalent lenses for the iPhone 6+, and they seem to be a step up in sharpness with less distortion. Other manufacturers are entering this market, so that competition will continue to drive quality up while holding prices to a reasonable level.
It is said that the best camera for the job is the one that's in your hand, and as the quality of mobile phone cameras increases, more and more often the camera in your hand ends up being your phone. Just as interchangeable lenses add value to a DSLR system, add-on lenses are becoming an increasingly useful accessory for extending the usefulness of your mobile phone's camera.

If you want to know how I am, you look at the photos. You listen for the sound of my throat choking on my own voice as the shutter clicks. You try to determine if the blurs are from smudges on the lens, or if from a shake of the hand, or deeper within the elements of my machine. You use other methods, which I may never understand.
Look once, twice, and again. When you find these truths, keep them safe for me. I'm searching my photos for clues, too.

“She was a woman who would answer over 25,000 911 calls over the course of her career and still find time to mentor, teach, train and help members of service across the entire city, and her hometown. Alison so clearly embodied the mission, the intent, the essence of being a member of FDNY EMS. That is why it is my distinct privilege today to honor Lieutenant Russo for her service, her sacrifice and her leadership, by posthumously promoting her to the rank of Captain, “ said Acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh who posthumously promoted Lieutenant Alison Russo to the rank of Captain at today’s Celebration of life for Captain Alison Russo.
Chief of EMS Lillian Bonsignore said, “To the members of Station 49, and our brothers and sisters gathered here today, we are here for you. We will find our strength in each other. I know you are hurting, I know you’re in pain, I know you are angry and there is nothing I can do to take that away or change that nor would I even try. But what I can say is you were given a gift, a special gift that will last a lifetime, you stood in the presence of greatness and Captain Russo cared deeply for all of you. Let her words guide you, let the sounds of your emergency response serve as a sign of our remembrance for Captain Alison Russo. Our sirens will continue to sing, a reminder to all, the best just like Alison are on their way.”
On Thursday, September 29th, Captain Alison Russo was stabbed and killed while working at FDNY EMS Station 49 in Queens. Lieutenant Russo is the 1,158th member of the FDNY to die in the line-of-duty. View the full Celebration of Life at: bit.ly/CaptRussoCelebrationofLife
