I’ll disappear in the fog as a foreigner to all life, as a human island detached from the dream of the sea, as a uselessly existing ship that floats on the surface of everything

Remembering... when Memorial Day was called Decoration Day... and we used to weave red, white and blue crepe paper streamers through the spokes of our bikes, and Dad would march in the parade with his baseball team, wearing that green and white satiny PAL shirt, and we would sit in front of the house and wave to him, and later, we would march too, with the Girl Scouts, and one year, I got to carry the flag .... and people alongside the parade route would hand out little American flags... and we would eat red, white and blue popsicles...

More importantly, as we head into this Memorial Day weekend, don't forget to remember what it is really all about. We remember, we will never forget.... all the brave American heroes that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Thank you.

Built a little cyber alien avi thinking of a dear friend I lost a year ago today... This was one of her most favorite things in SL. I miss her creativity, but most of all I just miss her. I miss you Sam ♥

During those first horrible days…during those early numbing weeks…during those initial months where there seems to be no bottom to the depths of your pain, it seems that desperate sadness has always been with you, and always will be with you. It’s hard to imagine a world in which grief isn’t all encompassing.

But, love comes before grief.

It seems that the pain of grief is the strongest emotion you’ve ever felt. It’s not.

Grief is merely an echo of the louder love that came before. Grief is no more than a paler reflection of the vivid love you felt initially.

Grief is but a shadow. Sometimes an infinitely dark, black shadow with sheer edges that cut you from the rest of the world. But remember, there is no shadow without light, and the brighter the source the more defined the line of shade. The initial bright love inside of you, and is still there now.

“Only people who are capable of loving strongly can also suffer great sorrow; but this same necessity of loving serves to counteract their grief, and heals them.”

Know that as painful as the grief may be at a given moment, that emotion can never be stronger than the love that was there first; that love is still there, and can be a source of strength.

Love comes before grief…

…And love will be there after.

When you look back on times we had

I hope you smile

And know that through the good and through the bad

I was on your side when nobody could hold us down

We claimed the brightest star

And we, we came so far

And no they won't forget, yeah

Whenever you remember times gone by

Remember how we held our heads so high

When all this world was there for us

We believed that we could touch the sky

Whenever you remember, I'll be there

Remember how we reached that dream together

Whenever you remember

When you think back on all we've done

I hope you're proud

When you look back and see how far we've come

It was our time to shine

And nobody could hold us down

They thought they'd see us fall

But we, we stood so tall

And no we won't forget, yeah

June 20th 2009 I came back from Hong Kong but it seems as if it was yesterday. This city will forever have a special place in my heart and I hope to return as soon as possible.

Cemetaries always make me think of "Green Grass" by Tom Waits. A poigniant song of hanging on to the memory of a loved one - exceprt below.

Lay your head where my heart used to be

Hold the earth above me

Lay down in the green grass

Remember when you loved me

Come closer don't be shy

Stand beneath a rainy sky

The moon is over the rise

Think of me as a train goes by

Stand in the shade of me

Things are now made of me

Don't say good bye to me

Describe the sky to me

November is a time of remembrance. This is a time to reflect before we move into the Christmas Season.

So here is a flame for all our loves, all our losses.

But while we burn our candles, our lights, our votives, remember them with fondness, remember them with kindness.

Soften the difficult times with a loving flame.

These days, I don't often share photos the same day that I took them, but every now and then there's a little more meaning behind one that makes me want to tell the story right away before my memory fades.

When famed photographer and fellow Troy native Jim Shaughnessy passed away in August 2018, I decided to attend calling hours. There, I had the opportunity to introduce myself to Jim's son, James. I briefly explained that not only had his father's work inspired me, but Jim as a person had been a very kind mentor to me. I had interviewed him for my senior thesis paper when I was attending Siena College, he was always a phone call or email away for any historical questions I had, and he graciously contributed to my first book. James later friended me on Facebook, where he saw a tribute post I had made to his father (you can see the post, which is public, here: www.facebook.com/tim.stockwell.587/posts/10100524475339363). I could tell that the post meant a lot to James, and that in turn meant a lot to me.

Well, today, James re-shared my post from 2018. I was surprised when I received the notification, but then I saw the reason: Today would have been Jim's 88th birthday. To see that my post was still helping James fondly remember his dad made my day.

Wednesdays are always my busiest work day, with a couple different meetings in different places in Troy, with the day ending with a soup kitchen for which I help recruit and oversee volunteers. In driving to the latter, I had some time to spare, and radio chatter tipped me off to the fact that CSX's B761 local was working in Troy. When B761 runs to Troy, it's typically a midday run. So, I knew that a rarer, afternoon run like this would afford some different angles. Also, on what would have been Jim Shaughnessy's 88th birthday, what better way to pay tribute than to photograph a train in Troy: the place where Jim grew up, went to school (RPI), worked, lived, and of course contributed so much to photographing Troy railroad history that is now long gone.

In this view, B761 prepares to depart Troy after picking up two refrigerated boxcars from K.C. Refrigeration. In the background on the right stands the steeple to St. John's Episcopal Church. The afternoon sun afforded an opportunity to place it in the photo, whereas normally it can't be included.

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

Anyone remember the Joni Mitchell song - the Circle Game:

"And the seasons they go round and round

And the painted ponies go up and down

We're captive on the carousel of time

We can't return we can only look behind from where we came

And go round and round and round In the circle game"

We're on another round - Happy New Year!

Remember that I love you!

Remember me, special dreams

The Beatles at Liverpool Pier Head. Armistice Day 2021

To all those poor souls from every nation who suffered and died in the trenches of the first world war. So that we shall always remember.

From November 11 (UK rememberance day, Armistice de la Première Guerre mondiale in France) to November 19 (German Volkstrauertag), this week is dedicated to remembering the dead of the First World War. I’ll try doing a photographic equivalent showing places of commemoration to the dead of the great war from 1914 to 1918 from the Württemberg region I live. Though monuments here are naturally dedicated to German soldiers, we should commemorate the dead of every nation that fought the great war.

Herrmann Ott , killed on Oct. 22, 1917 in West Flanders. Found that by chance at the war memorial in Bad Friedrichshall - a very personal piece of rememberance, I think.

Apology....I may have uploaded this same image before but wanted to place this above my photostream and it would not let me scroll down to find it...Flickr keeps changing settings so often i seem to get lost in all their faffing around and that drives me mad!.........Anyhow this is for all those we should remember, not just during the next few days but at any time we here of members of the armed forces who die or get injured serving their country

Explore 11/2/08 thank you

Yesterday, in Poland was "All Saint's Day". It is a very religious holiday. During that holiday people are traveling to pay tribute at the graves of their loved ones.

Visitors bring flowers and candles.

I am not sure if there is the similar holiday in other countries. Please let me know if you know. Thank you.

It is with a broken heart that I post my soulmate MojoRisin Bloodstorm passed away from complications of a stroke on June 4th, 2021. Mojo was a very unique man, I called him my social butterfly. This is the song I walked down the isle to. We always said it was out song because it fit so well.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtOvBOTyX00

Part of my wedding vows to Mojo were:

"People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime.

We may not know the reason;

We have lasted many seasons;

And I will love you for a lifetime."

At the time I did not know what the reason was, but I have come to understand that reason. You gave me pieces of myself I did not realize were missing & you take a part of my heart with you. I never thought it was possible to love someone as deeply as I did you, especially someone you had never touched, seen, or even knew what they looked like. I was wrong. We had such a connection that people could feel the love we had.

I have had so many tell me how much you loved me. They could see it when we were together. I will take that with me for the rest of my life. I once ask you what took you so long to find me. You said you got here as quick as you could & I told you if you had only stopped & ask for directions you could have found me sooner.

I will carry you in my heart forever. You just said you were looking forward to celebrating our one year anniversary & sadly that will never happen. Just remember hubby of mine that you were loved more than I ever thought humanly possible. You will forever be missed. Rest in peace my sexy hubby from your loving wife.
