As usual in Romanesque sculpture, in the relief of the Descent from the cloister of Silos, symbolic values prevail over naturalistic desires. The scene does not try to move, but to illustrate and indoctrinate.

However, in this relief every detail is taken care of and its composition abounds in undulating lines that provide it with extraordinary dynamism.

The Cross occupies the center of the composition, Christ appears with his right hand unnailed, which is held by the Virgin towards her face; gesture of respect originating in the Byzantine world.

Christ is larger than the rest of the characters, following the same scheme as the hierarchical perspective of Romanesque art originating from the Byzantine.

I continue to be in awe of the beauty I saw at Ox Bow Bend in Grand Teton National Park. Here is another look at this spectacular place. This image has a wider angle and less zoom than the one I posted several weeks ago. Any way you dice it, this is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Talk about a stress reliever.

Birds stretch for the same reasons we do! Whether they’re getting ready to fly, relieving some tension, or just keeping the blood flowing.

The Eared Dove is a resident breeder throughout South America from Colombia to southern Argentina. It is a close relative of the North American Mourning Dove. The head has a grey crown, black line behind the eye, and the blue-black on the lower ear coverts. These black markings give the species its English and specific name. (Wikipedia)

In 1901 the drawing were approved for a new Church, which would relieve St.Peter`s and St.Paul`s parishes, where the population growth was large.Construction started in 1903,with a planned completion date of 1906,which was when St.John`s Parish was founded .The Church was finally inaugurated by Bishop Gottfrid Billing on Holy Teinity Day,june 1907.Designed in the Art Noveau style by Axsel Anderberg.

Tower height: 60,2m.Height to ceiling 26,13m. Length of Church 52,27m.

Both externally and internally, the Church is adorned with roses cut and carved by hand, which is why it is called "The Church of Roses".The are more than 1,000 roses in the Church.

Each of us is interconnected in the web of existence, and we are deeply affected by each other’s suffering. If Christ’s suffering brings a Christian to see the cross in everyone’s suffering, then the Christian will do all he or she can to help relieve that suffering. It’s then that the gospel has done its job. If Israel’s suffering brings a Jew to see his or her suffering in the suffering of everyone else, it’s then that the Torah has done its job. Without taking action to relieve suffering there can be no Jew; there can be no Christian.

" I always look forward to this time of year. When the first tinge of yellow touches the leaves with the contrast between shade and sunshine. A comparison of opposites where a gentle breeze can chill or relieve one making you appreciate the other once it has gone. Here's to new beginnings. Happy New Year to my friends and family! The best is yet to come... "

Gori Fortress (Georgian: გორის ციხე) is a medieval citadel in Georgia, situated above the city of Gori on a rocky hill.

Standing on the hilltop, the fortress's outlines follow the natural relief, hence the irregular shape. The inner fortifications occupy the entire plateau, from which the walls descend towards the road along the western slope. Originally, the walls reached the river below and the water had to be diverted through a tunnel, but the river has retreated since.

The fortress first appears in records from the 13th century, but archaeological evidence shows that the area had already been fortified in the final centuries BCE. The fortress was of major strategic importance, given its dominant position guarding a regional trade route, and accommodated a large garrison. In the 16th century the Ottomans captured it to overawe Tbilisi. In 1598 the Georgians, led by their king Simon I, besieged it for nine months to no avail; in 1599 they feigned relieving the siege for Lent and then launched a surprise night attack to regain control over the citadel. The fortress continued to change hands between the Georgians and the Persians in the 17th century.

The citadel acquired its present-day form under the Georgian kings Rostom of Kartli in the 1630s and Erekle II in 1774. Following its completion, King Rostom asked the Italian missionary Cristophoro Castelli, who lived in Gori, to draw the fortress. His stunning illustration from approximately 1642 is a valuable historical document. After the Russian annexation of Georgia in 1801, the fortress was garrisoned by a Russian grenadier battalion, but its importance gradually declined and the fortifications went defunct. The city plan of 1824 shows the citadel, the city on the hill slopes and a moat encircling both. The British Encyclopædia Metropolitana reported in 1845:

At the foot of a chain of low sandstone hills stands the Town and Fortress of Gori, (perhaps the Gursenna of Strabo,) the next place in magnitude and importance to Tiflis. The Castle, an oblong, 200 paces in length, placed sixteen fathoms above the level of the Liakhvi, running at the foot of the hill on which it stands, is now abandoned, a Chapel in its South-Eastern angle being the only part in use.

Gori Fortress was significantly damaged by an earthquake in 1920. The best preserved structure is Tskhra-kara ("the Nine-gated"), facing to the west and adjoined by supplementary walls on the south and east.

Relieves murales. Historias en piedra

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

De: www.worldhistory.org/trans/es/1-12950/angkor-wat/

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wall reliefs.- Stories in Stone

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From: www.worldhistory.org/Angkor_Wat/

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Angkor Wat is designed to represent Mount Meru, the spiritual and physical nexus in Hinduism which is the center of all reality. The five peaks of Mount Meru are represented by the five spires of the temple. Brahma and the Devas (demigods) were thought to live on Mount Meru and it is famously referenced in The Mahabharata when Yudhishthira and his brothers travel to the gates of heaven. One by one the brothers die until only Yudhishthira and his faithful dog are left. When they reach the border of heaven, the gatekeeper tells Yudhishthira that he may enter for the worthy life he lived but that dogs are not allowed in heaven. Yudhishthira rejects any paradise which does not include dogs and turns away, but the gatekeeper stops him and reveals himself as Vishnu who was only testing him one last time before allowing him entrance.

Stories such as this are told all over the temple where one finds scenes from the classic works of Hindu religious literature such as the Ramayana and Bhagavad-Gita. The great Battle of Kurukshetra from the Gita is depicted clearly as is the Battle of Lanka from the Ramayana. As most people could not read in the 12th century CE, Angkor Wat served as a gigantic book on which the important religious and cultural tales could be related visually.

How time flies - the rail transport company Lokomotion has also been active on the German, Austrian and Italian railways for over 20 years. The Rail Traction Company from Italy holds a 30% stake in the company, while other shareholders include STR AG with 20%, Kombiverkehr GmbH & Co. KG (20%) and DB Cargo (30%). The aim when the company was founded was to relieve the pressure on the Brenner motorway in particular and to transfer freight to rail. A relatively new service provided by Lokomotion is the DGS 44131 from Plattling to Poggio Rusco. This train transports sugar to Italy. On 9 October 2024, the anniversary locomotive 193 774 was dispatched for this connection and a photo of the train was taken near Niederaudorf with the Kranzhorn in the background.

By scratching on the tree bark. Hmmmm- feels good, I bet!

I have brought the sky to you

Leave this unrelenting earth

What kindness did it show you

Except a massacre of truth

Loosen your bonds and move freely

Become what you are worth

Could anyone have shown more love

Could anyone have died more cruelly

Surely you are now your true self

Pure light of the spirit

Let go of that last breath

No more torture or death

Move forwards without regret

Thank you to everybody who has so kindly viewed, faved & commented on the first work in this Easter Series, "Sacrifice". I think what I shall do is a massive catch up with you all after the last work in this series goes up on Easter Day. Then I can enjoy all your galleries again!

So meanwhile...for Good Friday I have chosen one of my “Christ Tree” images, as this particular tree seems to embody the evocative feelings that gazing upon these series of photographs that I took at that time in my life always brings me, even now, some time after.

Christ was the World Tree, that we cut down. We potentially cut down our own future, but He knew that these memories would remain, that His sacrifice would never be forgotten while there were people who resisted the curtailment of freedom of spiritual choice in this world.

This living Christ Tree shows that love can still grow if we let it, that compassion can still flourish. But this living Christ Tree is also a reminder that all living things can contain a sorrow within them, as we carry our memories with us, not just from events in our own lives but also from events in the past, from our history.

This living Christ Tree is a reminder that we are part of the life on this planet, that what we do affects everybody else, we can never really escape it, because this life is all around us, and what we have made of it, for good or ill.

There comes a time when we must leave our lives on this earth, and let our souls travel on; how brave are those who choose to sacrifice themselves to further mankind’s understanding. But even for them, the light will come to relieve them of their burdens, enabling them to finally rest. Christ was such an individual, part human, part divine.

There is a spark of divinity in all of us, and will respond if given a chance to grow. The world could be a much better place if we listened to that voice telling us how things could be. All we have to do is turn to the Light.

The Christ Tree was photographed in Sussex in the UK, near a village called Wilmington, and one of my most favourite places to be. In the right light, the Christ Tree speaks to you.

I have paired this work with Ólafur Arnald’s wonderful piece of music “Epilogue”, which has that sense of a final ‘letting go’ that captures the mood I was trying to create with this work for Good Friday. Please find link below.

In floriographical terms, this hellebore (under it's alternative name of the christmas rose) represents anxiety, or more appropriately, relieving anxiety.

White represents innocence and purity.

I'm not into making political statements, but this felt quite timely.
