Beautiful morning today but didn't manage to go out and take pictures due to work. Anyway, spent far too much time on eBay tonigh, looking to buy a 70-300mm VR to replace the one which got stolen over a year ago. Had to rustle up a quick pasta dish for supper tonight, hence linguini shot - killing two birds so to speak ;-)

Stuck the 35mm back on to the camera - I'll try and take photos with this all week.

Two of the most reliable, adorable, kind people I know.

When we were broken down a man on a horse came up, I think he had the more reliable form of transport.

My internet connection, TV signal and home phone all rely on this box. It's been like it for over ten years.

Summerhill's AV 112 operating an evening peak service to St Stephens Green.

Selected morning & evening trips on route 20B were extended to & from Saint Stephens Green on weekdays, a relic of route 20's past when it was truely a cross city route.

AV 112 has been religiously allocated to the 20B since it was delivered to " the hill " & also had the distinction of being the first departure from Ardlea Road last Sunday when routes 14 & 20B were merged.

Reliable Brands is still around (as Reliable Brothers), but they're in a much more modern facility in Green Island.

Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) of Rotary Marsh, Kelowna, BC. There has been a resident heron here in most months of the year since before I moved to Kelowna in 2014! First time I've seen him (likely from his relatively small size) on this particlar 'perch' — some hyoomin's notion of a hollow log....

that's my sister, always ready for pictures. :) dang flickr sharpening, these were perfect in ps.

Reliable Source Eden

This is a very interesting find - at least if you happen to be a Finnish collector of hand tools. This is a rather boring looking Warranted Superior hand saw in all likelihood made by E.C. Atkins in Indianapolis. The model is the no. 59 Reliable with a awful tooth line and a slight kink to the saw plate.

But the interesting part is the etch. The etch is unlike any other I have seen as it features a large Finnish crest in the middle, something which I have never seen before.

I am not sure if I have been able to determine the full etch, but a guesstimation is this

CAST (FINNISH CREST) STEEL

No. (FINNISH CREST) 59

FENNIA

(illegible) SAW WORKS

INDIANAPOLIS

So as far as I can tell this saw was made explicitly for the Finnish market. Judging by the shape of the handle I'd be guessing that it was produced between the wars. As Finland became independent as late as December 6th 1917, the saw could not have been made before this time, and I don't think it could have been made after WW II.

My belief is that the latin word FENNIA at the bottom was just placed there as a general celebration of Finnish independence making it attractive to native consumers. I am not aware of a Finnish hardware store or merchant that would have used the word FENNIA, although at the time it was very commonly used in marketing of all sorts of goods and services.

According to Ervin Schaffer's Hand Saw Maker of North America, the no 59 Reliable hand saw was made between 1904 and 1919. It also repaired for a year in 1940 as a Home & Farm saw. I have no idea what that latter saw looked like and I think the documented evidence is inconclusive. I have seen one clearly later made no 59 which is stamped both E.C. Atkins and Sheffield Saw Works as well as Reliable, and bearing the Warranted Superior medallion. This saw has a very clear etch and it doesn't mention Home & Farm. So go figure.

I've been working on a series of poster designs that are primarily typography based. This is the first in the series. They are designed to be fairly minimal and primarily relying on type as the driving force.

This poster encourages experimentation through the process of failure. The saying goes like this:

"Failure is the only reliable constant in the creative arts. embrace. grow."

This Canadian wind-up bus represents a GM Silversides coach from the late 1940s.

St Ives began it's life as the village of Slepe in the later part of the 10th Century. Its location being probably due to it being the last reliable crossing of the River Great Ouse before the river reached the Great Fen. Slepe is derived from the Saxon word for muddy and this is down to the fact that there was no bridge at that time. If you wished to cross the river you got wet and if the name is anything to go by you got muddy too!

By the 11th Century Slepe was part of the estates of the Abbots of Ramsey and they set about turning their new possession into a money making venture. Travellers were focused upon the location owing to its river crossing, then a ford thought to have been situated roughly where the modern Church Street meets the river. At this point a town grew up to service the travellers and the boats plying trade upon the river. We must remember that in those days the rivers were equivalent to our modern motorways.

We are not sure when the first bridge was built but it was certainly in existance by 1107 and probably of timber construction. The provision of a crossing place where users did not get plastered in mud and soaking wet encouraged even greater use of the adjacent new town and its facilities.

Over the next few centuries the town grew even more and by the early 15th Century traffic both over and under the bridge had increased to a level where a timber bridge was insufficient and at some time prior to 1426 a stone bridge, much of which remains to this day was built.

The bridge then had 200 years of relative peace until the English Civil War when in 1645 the southern most arch of the bridge, near what is now the Dolphin Hotel, was destroyed and replaced by a drawbridge. The drawbridge was removed in 1716 and the arch replaced in stone and brick funded by the town's major landowner; Charles, 1st Duke of Manchester.

An old and grimy Smith-Corona Classic 12 typewritter. Still useful, still reliable, still ticking. Reminds me of the kind of people God wants to use, we need not be highly educated, powerful, talented, rich or socially well positioned. We just need to be available for Him to use. God uses us ordinary people. =)
