A Reliable Series postcard that was posted in Abingdon on the 26th. April 1908 to:
Miss Carter,
School Street,
Winfrith,
Near Dorchester,
Dorset.
The message on the back of the card was as follows:
"April 26th. 1908.
It seems so long since I
heard from you.
I will try and write a letter
in a few days.
I am fairly well but so
tired.
We have had such a snow -
it lasted 24 hours. I have not
seen such snow for over 30
years.
With much love,
Yours,
E.W."
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 26th. April 1908, Donald Eccles was born in Yorkshire. He became a British character actor.
Donald Yarrow Eccles was born the son of Charles Henry and Constance Eccles, his father was a doctor. Eccles was educated at Highgate School and then worked in an insurance office.
He made his stage debut in New York City in 1930, and later became known as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
His debut in London was in Counsellor at Law in 1934 at the Piccadilly. During the Second World War he spent six years in the navy.
In 1960 he acted in the film A Taste of Money, and later appeared in many other films including A Midsummer Night's Dream (1968), The Wicker Man (1973), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1982), Coming Out of the Ice (1982), The Dresser (1983), The Master of Ballantrae (1984), A Private Function (1984) and Young Sherlock Holmes (1985).
He also appeared in many television roles, such as Pollio in
I, Claudius and Mr Justice Vosper in the second series of Rumpole of the Bailey, until his death in a road accident in 1986 in Brighton.

Serpentine Creek, the last reliable water until we would get to Slate Canyon in two days. We left camp that morning carrying tow gallons of water apiece.
We did a 7 day/6 night backpack trip from the South Rim in Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.
We descended into the canyon on the South Bass Trail continuing on the Tonto West Trail ascending on the Hermit Trail. Highlights include seeing 8 significant side canyons, carrying two gallons of water 1 day and not seeing any other people for 4 entire days.

This is the old bicycle I use to get from the local train station to the library and back if it isn't raining. It's an old Tigra Sprint made in Switzerland with a fancy gold and silver colour scheme (which you can't really see anymore because it's so rusty and dirty). It's old and battered enough not to get stolen at the station :-).
They say that even 10 minutes of exercice, like cycling, already improves your fitness, health and well being. What a lie...

This church is from the Reliable EasyLock Unbreakable Bricks instructions from 1971. I know there is another version of instructions out there because I have seen another building online that is not in mine. I think it is funny that the proportions of the buildings in the instructions look more like they were built with American Bricks than with these.
Working on the top floor, we often get to see our notoriously reliable elevators sitting there with the lights out and the doors open.
A self-portrait from January 1977. This graphic photo (high contrast and grainy) was taken from my second self-promotion brochure / calendar. I set up the shot, and my wife clicked the shutter. My neighbor, Lonnie (who was also a professional photographer), is standing behind me, resting a 500mm lens over my shoulder and hiding his left leg behind my two legs so that you see only three legs -- thus giving the appearance of a human tripod.
Lessons learned: The purpose of the promo was to creatively convince future clients that their photo assignment would be completed to their satisfaction. This image was on the cover of a self-mailing calendar -- next to the address label, so it was the first thing people saw. It was also the thing people remembered the most -- not the pretty picture on the inside (with the one-year calendar). I learned to use humor and creativity in many of my future promos because it not only captured attention, but often left a lasting impression.

Reliable Rexall, 801 Irving Street, San Francisco, California. There's a sidewalk cafe next door to this pharmacy, so I got a lot of weird looks from the patrons as I took photos of this.
"Old Reliable" features a Marina Blue 1967 Corvette convertible parked in front of a brick wall ad showing Owl Cigars painted over a Bull Durham sign. The wall was inspired from photographs a friend took on vacation. A building was razed and uncovered these ghost signs and created a great abstraction with the overlapping signs.
