Coronation Day for some, but others among us had better things to do. Despite the wall-to-wall establishment propaganda, the utter implosion [corruption might be a better word] of the Scottish National Party and the absolutely foul weather, some 20000 to 25000 marched from Kelvingrove Park, through the city centre to Glasgow Green in support of Scottish Independence and a rejection of the imperial British state. As they say in these parts, "you can shove your coronation up your a***."

The first Mennonites in Canada arrived from Pennsylvania in 1786. The majority of the Mennonites that migrated to Canada over the next 150 years came directly from Europe.
Old Order Mennonites (Pennsylvania German: Fuhremennischte) form a branch of the Mennonite tradition. Old Order are those Mennonite groups of Swiss German and south German heritage who practice a lifestyle without some elements of modern technology, still drive a horse and buggy rather than cars, wear very conservative and modest dress, and have retained the old forms of worship, baptism and communion.
All Old Order Mennonites reject certain technologies (e.g., radio, television, Internet), but the extent of this rejection depends on the individual group. Old Order groups generally place great emphasis on a disciplined community instead of the individual's personal faith beliefs. The Pennsylvania German language is spoken vigorously among all horse-and-buggy groups except the Virginia Old Order Mennonites, who lost their original language before becoming Old Order. There is no overall church or conference to unite all the different groups of Old Order Mennonites. In 2008–2009, a minority of Old Order Mennonites accepted automobiles, whereas a majority retain horse and buggy transportation.
The total population of Old Order Mennonites can be estimated to be between 72,000 and 84,000 in 2021.
An original story by Geoffrey Piltz copyright 2023
Balgrain is an ancient house. Of the many stories of those who have lived in it, the most well known and strangest is the tale of the Black Hound.
In 1765 Margaret Borthwick was heiress to the Balgrain estate. She had been orphaned at seven when father was killed in a hunting accident, her mother having died soon after her birth. Her father’s sister and husband became her guardians and raised Margaret as a daughter, their two sons becoming as brothers to her.
As heiress to a considerable estate many men courted her. The older were turned away by Margaret herself, and the younger by her guardians, concerned as they were to protect her from mere fortune hunters. Although Margaret understood their reasons for each rejection, and it did not embitter her towards her aunt and uncle, she became, like most young women of the time, increasing anxious for a husband as the time of her majority, when she could wed whom she chose, approached.
Finally her twenty-first arrived and she entered into her inheritance. Balgrain House, which had been kept in repair for her by a small staff, saw full life again for the first time in fourteen years to host a grand ball in celebration of her birthday and her new status as the Lady Balgrain.
All the gentry of the surrounding countryside and relatives and friends from farther afield attended the gala. Among them came an Irish adventurer by the name of Edward Powers who was staying in the vicinity as a guest of a distant neighbour. He was, as in all the best romances, tall, dark and handsome, and Margaret, longing as she was for a husband, was irresistibly attracted to him, and before the evening ended had convinced herself that she was wildly in love with this stranger.
Handsome, with impeccable manners, conversation and deportment, Powers’ only slight defect, readily overlooked, was his odd eyes - the right one was blue and the left hazel. His hosts, the distant neighbours, believed that he was of the great Powers family of Wicklow. Accepting this Margaret, now being of age, married Powers inside three months against her adoptive family’s advice and wishes.
Powers’ true position and nature showed immediately. His position was that he was of lowly birth, penniless and lived by gambling and sponging off his hosts as he moved from one country house party to another. He was by nature a wastrel. When he learnt that the Balgrain house and estate were entailed so that he could not sell or raise money on the real property, and that fourteen years of estate income had been invested in irredeemable 3% Government annuities, he became livid with anger and railed against his wife for entrapping him into poverty! After running through Margaret’s ready money in a mere three months he began drinking to excess and was frequently drunk and violent, striking servants with no provocation. He held wild late night drinking bouts at the house accompanied by low-life companions found in local ale houses. The only check to his actions came when following a drunken diatribe against his wife he actually struck her. Her cousins on hearing of this openly threatened him with a public horse whipping if it happened again. The vehemence of their language and the violence of their demeanour caused him to break off all association with Margaret so that they occupied separate parts of the house and ceased to even see or talk to each other.
Margaret and Powers had only been married for four months when the night of Powers’ disappearance, or transformation, came. One morning after a late night filled with loud sounds from Powers’ side of the house - sounds of drunken carousing, slamming doors, shouting and a dog’s barking - a house maid had tentatively and timidly opened the door to Powers’ drawing room to see a dark figure asleep in the shadow beneath the table. This was not unusual and the maid had started to quietly clean up the room when the figure awoke and crawled from under the table. At this the maid fled screaming.
The maid’s cries brought other servants and then Margaret to the drawing room door. The maid was almost incoherent and the only sense that could be had from her was that “drink had turned the master into a beast”. Fearful of what Powers may have done two man servants, followed by Margaret, cautiously entered the room to see that its only occupant was a large black dog. Puzzled surprise turned to astonishment as the dog stood up on its hind legs and walked towards Margaret looking directly into her eyes with its own, one blue and one brown. Stunned, Margaret uttered a faint sound and collapsed insensible upon the floor.
On acquaintance the dog proved friendly and amiable, unlike Powers, and, apart from a desire for beer which he would beg for on his hind legs whenever he saw a tankard, he had no vices. All agreed that he was much to be preferred to Powers. He was christened “Master” and took Powers’ place as faithful companion to Margaret and guardian of Balgrain, duties he discharged faithfully for many years.
Of Powers the man no trace was ever found and no report of him ever came from distant places. Opinion became equally divided between those who believed that he had been turned into a dog by some enchantment or curse and those who simply saw the thing as an insoluble mystery. No mystery is insoluble, in full or part, however, if only those with some knowledge of the matter can be found. One such person appeared seven years later, the year that “Master” died, Powers was declared legally dead and Margaret remarried.
An itinerant came into the area earning money by exhibiting at local fairs and inns a large brown dog that walked on its hind legs and drank beer. This naturally aroused the interest and curiosity of the people, for all were familiar with the story of the Black Hound, and the showman was brought before the magistrate. Here he told this story.
Seven years previously the showman had come north bringing with him a trained black dog. On a light summer’s evening he met on the road a tall, dark gentleman with one blue and one brown eye who was a little drunk. The gentleman was greatly taken with the dog, for like him it drank, was dark haired and had the same odd eyes, and the gentleman insisted on buying the animal. The showman did not want to sell his livelihood but was unwilling to resist a social superior who could make trouble for him so the sale was made. He then followed the gentleman home hoping to steal back the dog and witnessed a violent incident. Two young men rode up to the door of the house and knocked loudly calling for Powers. After some time Powers suddenly threw open the door, stuck a pistol into the stomach of one of the callers and pulled the trigger. Fortunately for the young man the pistol flashed in the pan without firing. The other young man then struck Powers violently on the head knocking him to the ground. The young men rode off, both on one horse leading the other horse with Powers’ body on it. The showman fled in great fear and had never been north again in seven years.
While this solved the mystery of the appearance of the Black Hound the matter of Powers’ disappearance remained unresolved. Suspicion naturally fell upon Margaret’s cousins but on the showman’s evidence the blow to Powers’ head could be claimed to be justifiable, his body had never been found and he was now legally dead. So to the satisfaction and approval of all it was decided to let sleeping dogs lie.
This is a cat. For everyone - just a striped outbred cat. But for us, he was a member of our family. Those who do not have pets will not understand this. But those who have been or are will understand us very well. By adopting a pet, we learn a lot about ourselves. These creatures are able to touch the most hidden strings of the soul.
He lived with us for 15 years. And he died from a serious illness. The vets said he would live 2-3 weeks. We gave the cat medication, put on drips, collected food and hand-fed. We did the impossible - he lived for more than 2 years.
The little cat taught us that love and rejection of the inevitable can work wonders. We, doctors, and Death in general are old enemies.
You get yourself ready, you’re looking forward to the date, you go there, and "absolute nightmare" they stand you up. There’s the rejection, the humiliation. It’s certainly not nice.
Being "stood up":
If your date doesn’t show, doesn’t text, and you’re just left waiting with no sign of them – you’ve been stood up.
It also means that if you get yourself ready, get yourself there, you text to see if they’re on their way and they then tell you they can’t make it – you’ve still been stood up.
Keep Your Cool
First up then, if you get stood up, and you’re still out at the venue – whatever emotions start to wash over you, take some deep breaths. Keep your cool and stay composed.
Yes it hurts, yes perhaps it feels a little embarrassing. But no-one knows what’s going on, no-one’s watching you or judging you – no matter how self-conscious you may now feel. So try to relax and don’t get too worked up.

I bumped this up because I want to inspire myself. I decided that this winter break is for working on the beginnings of my senior show, since I am graduating next fall. So crazy!! I am going to work on things that need to get done (preparatory work and research), my show is going to be in the narrative form of this image and much of my other older stuff, mixed with more contemporary portraits like the diptych below. I am tempted to use film, since I have fallen in love with it so much this past semester, but for logistical reasons I'm going to stick with digital. So much to do and plan! But I'm excited. :)
I choose to love you in silence…
For in silence I find no rejection,
I choose to love you in loneliness…
For in loneliness no one owns you but me,
I choose to adore you from a distance…
For distance will shield me from pain,
I choose to kiss you in the wind…
For the wind is gentler than my lips,
I choose to hold you in my dreams…
For in my dreams, you have no end.

This futuristic girl portrait is made from sheets of aluminium and seems to express a rejecting distance to the surrounding world, which is clearly not hers.
This artwork is made by the Italian sculptor Regina Cassolo Bracchi in the early 1930-ies, after she had abandoned the more naturalistic styles of sculpturing in marble and plaster. You can notice a remarkable facial expression present in this futuristic metallic material, which to me shows how outstanding this artist is. To highlight the rejecting attitude of this artwork, I used the reflection from the display vitrine to show the surrounding 17th century Corderie of the Arsenale, this magnificent art exhibition space, as a rejected world in blue. This blue derives from the wall inside the display vitrine and it is overruled by the grey metallic glow of the artwork itself. After some ducking and moving, the photographer succeeded in hiding inside this metallic glow while taking the photo. 👎 Rejection.
On 14 December 2023, an administrator for the Flickr group "Flickr Pearls ... No Insects ..... No Flowers " rejected this photo for...well, here's why, in their own words, grammar, and spelling:
"we were missing a clear subject.
If there is none and it s more atmospheric , the light needs to be better and clearer to transport a atmosphere or what ever, you wantedd t show. as well ts probably underexposed, as well the Trees in teh foreground have the same hue as the background, so all in all does not give the viewer too much Orientattion , and reason to look at it, plus slightly technical rpoblems.
It could easily be, that the sitaution could provide a much better pic in an oter daytome or tome of the year. "

Synopsis:
Jem and the Holograms have been invited to play at Mrs. Farnsworth's charity ball. Everyone attenting the ball will wear costumes from Houdinis time, and all the proceeds will go to the childrens hospital for a new wing. Astral, one of the top young magicians of the country, will perform at the ball. The Stingers have also offered to play at the benefit, and they aren't about to give up at Mrs. Farnsworth's rejection, so Rapture takes the part of the host body of Houdini's return.
Around 1000 AD, Icelandic leader Þorgeir discarded his Pagan statues over these falls, signifying the rejection of Norse religion in favor of Christianity. Today, Goðafoss, or “Waterfall of the Gods,” honors those spurned deities and preserves one of the country’s great legends, chiseling a path through the ancient lava fields on its way to the old Viking sea.
Developed upon Lord Vader's request, The TIE/Eta-2 was supposedly the Galactic Empire's solution for a updated standard starfighter, after the rejection of the TIE/Advanced x1. The Interceptor was designed by Vader himself, and proved to be deadly in combat. The Interceptor was part of the TIE/Wing project, which saw the creation of dozens of TIE designs, all using the same detachable wing format. The TIE/Eta-2 never saw full serive as each unit cost over 2 billlion credits.
-----
After I received my Jedi Interceptor kit, I wanted to make an Imperial one, et voila. I'm pleased with the results, and I managed to fit some nifty play features into the build too!
Features
-Two Astromech Unit compartments
-Fully folding landing gear
-Moving front cannons
-Removable cockpit
-Fits 2 figures
Check it out here with the TIE/Wing attached and landing gear retracted!
The latest in cock-blocking technology, Riley senses a man's suitability and responds with either a lick to the nose (approval), or a chomp to the Achilles (rejection).
This portrait is usually kept in storage. His expressions is dour, and the likeness is not flattering, yet these qualities implied his rejection of vanity. Purchased as French, it was alter thought to be Flemish. Aspects such as the man’s cloak are unusual, and the work is difficult to place. Some have even doubted the date, but technical evidence confirms it. This modest work represents the large body of paintings that are now generally excluded from museum collections or which no long survive.

Meet Lincy.
I met Lincy a few days back - on Halloween in Bethesda where I was to return a rental lens during a lunch break. Since it was Halloween and actually by habit I carried my camera - just in case I ran into anyone interesting and I was not disappointed though I came close. After one polite rejection from a yooung couple in a haste and a few minutes of wandering around I decided to head back to office when I saw Lincy walking past with a companion. I knew I had a nice subject but was a little hesitant given her animated conversation and a little unsure if she was upset. But luckily a few minutes later I saw them walk back again this time carrying lunch and I decided to take my chance and make my request. Turned out Lincy was actually extremely friendly and needed very little convincing. She was quite enthusiastic and eager to help out. I did mention my initial hesitation and learned that she works for a car dealership closeby and it being the end of the month was a very hectic day and I guess that explained her animated conversation with Mat. Matt her companion had recently joined the dealership and was responsible for delivery while she was with inventory. Of course her dark makeup was for Halloween but would actually work to my advantage for a nice edgy look especially the eye makeup and the lips. I also wanted to utilize include bright red nail polish. In a few minutes of conversation I learned that Lincy was a mix - German Irish and Scottish and loved knitting (and I think baking). . More importantly she was very much a photographer herself primarily shooting landscape - so she pretty much needed no explanation when I said I needed to find good light She was no stranger to modeling having done that quite a few times which was apparent with her confidence and the easy nonchalance with the posing and effortlessly switching expressions (which cannot be easy on a busy street and with a stranger). I liked quite a few of her pics so had some difficulty with choices but am going with this since I liked her direct look. I also liked how the fingers and reds draw attention and compliment her stunning eyes and bring out her beauty (not that she needs help there). One thing that she would change about the world today - have people be a little more nicer to each other. A great sentiment indeed!
I did a little touch up in PS - but feedback is most welcome.
Thank you Lincy for being a part of this project (and Mat for your patience). If you would do visit the page and like a copy of your pics please drop me a note. Wish you all the very best - it was indeed a pleasure meeting you.

Another shot from the rejection pile... I've been unable get a good shot of this sculpture - 'One and Other' by Anthony Gormley. At least this one shows the setting in more dramatic light.
Please refrain from posting any group invite icons / awards icons or any other images, thanks.
Captured this image as two great white egrets had been active in a courtship ritual when one just all of a sudden turned away as if in complete rejection of the other. It was such fascinating behavior to watch and so interesting. Just when you think everything is great it suddenly changes and the one egret seemed to be in utter dismay.
The End.
Happy, happy weekends Flickr friends. School holidays start tomorrow so I promise to catch up with everyone over the next few days. Thanks for all the wonderful comments on this little series this week. Believe it or not, they all started out from pictures I took at the beach last weekend. So, it's sort of been a week of beach shots with a bit of a twist. Thank you all again for being so supportive. Liz :-)
