Sometime I like amuse myself by going back through my accumulation of thousands of underwater images to find the ones which I first rejected as real.  Usually this rejection has to do with some technical fault such as bad focus (usually an image-killer), impossibly filthy water (sometimes fixable by laboriously removing the spots) or motion blur. Of the faults, motion blur is the easiest to turn into an artistic image. It sometimes generates a very interesting image. Here is a Many-Spotted Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides)  which I tried to capture with a shap shot at Magic Passage:

The attempt, as you can see, failed miserably. Both the fish and the background are blurred. Nevertheless, a tiny, nagging tickle in the back of my skull kept mumbling, "Play with it, idiot." I always pay attention to these messages from my id. As you can see, with a little work, the wasted pixels redeem themselves. A mistake becomes art. I don't know if I'd want to hang it on the wall, but it provided me with a few minutes of not  thinking about computer networks. That's a blessing.

Here is another one that I saved from the bit dumpster. The Silver Sweetlips (Diagramma pictum),  one of my favourites, hangs out in mobs at Magic Passage. You can find many more images of them here on Madang - Ples Bilong Mi by putting "pictum" in the search box. Is is a very beautiful fish: You can see in the shot above that the background is relatively unblurred (relatively, as I say) but the fish was moving quite smartly. This transforms the beautiful yellow spots of the sub-adult into concentric yellow arcs which give the image the impression of some kind of weird fingerprint. Fingerprint? Okay, let me reboot . . . nope, still reminds me of a fingerprint. What can I say?

At any rate, a strange piece of chintzy art is better than wasted pixels. I might actually hang this one. No, wait. I'm far too lazy.

Here's a shot of the Silver Sweetlips sub-adults hanging in the current. These are very chilled-out fish:

They gang up like sulky teenagers on the corner by the liquor store, waiting for some sucker to buy them a bottle. I'm sure that if there were an equivalent of Mary Jane for fish, this mob would be toking up.

I did mention something about Barrel Sponges.

Here are two Barrel Sponges (Xestospongia testudinaria)  at Magic Passage, right in the area of the highest currents:

When Barrel Sponges get really big, they are very heavy and present a huge surface area upon which a strong current can push. It's not surprising that they occasionally get knocked over. Here you can see one that is hanging on and one that has been toppled. Not to worry, the severely tilded sponge can continue to grow. When knocked down like this, the sponge continues to try to grow up towards the light, so some of the ones which have been over on their side for a long time have very peculiar shapes.

I'll wrap up with the anemone with one little anemonefish guarding it:

I have one hour left to load the boat and get to the pick-up point for our regular Saturday dive. I'm outta here.

After a moment of rejection and confusion Johann offered his hand in friendship. John (the name Johann gave to the African Black Crowned-Crane) quickly recovered and seemed to decide a new friend was worth the momentary confusion.

John offered up his own foot and gently touched the glass where Johann's finger was, then bent low and touched the glass with his beak. Johann waved goodbye and promised to visit again soon.

After being skunked the other day, coming home with only a rejection - the third in a row, I began doubting myself and wondered if I was putting off a negative vibe - which is very possible. Anyway I met up with Scott today and we walked. It was good to chat with Scott and talk about our projects and locations and the people we saw around us. By this time about 15-20 minutes had passed and we had looped around the plaza and began heading back. Ahead we saw a woman in a hat and red lipstick. I indicated to Scott that I would like to ask and see if they would allow me to photograph them.

Meet Golara.

I don't recall how the conversation began but they said I looked familiar and asked if I was the one that had photographed them the other day. I said no I would have remembered for sure. Amidst the flurry of conversation with these high energy women, I got my request out and needless to say they agreed. What followed was a fairly long photoshoot with these two very gregarious women. They very willingly posed, needed very little direction and where eager to see the screen; resulting in the three of us chimping and them laughing or groaning at the various images. It was a blast.

Golara is was born and raise here in Calgary and works with Iysha at shoe store in the Downtown core and like working at their shop because of the generous discount, which supports their shoe habit (?).

Thank you ladies for being such a bright spot in my day, I really enjoyed talking to you and photographing you.

Greens/EFA MEPs mark the rejection of ACTA by the European Parliament

After more than two years of campaigning by the Greens, the ACTA agreement was finally rejected by the European Parliament today.

The last few months have seen heavy lobbying by pro-ACTA forces come head to head with grass roots anger at the agreement as more and more information on it became public.

...

Today was a victory for the Citizens of Europe who contacted their MEPs, signed the petitions and marched in the streets.

The Greens/EFA group will continue keep a close eye on developments, keep citizens informed and fight for internet freedom and digital rights.

My sister found this among my mom's papers. I had heard about it a long time ago, but seeing this letter brought it back to mind.

This was just like my Mom. I suspect that she knew in 1943 that Harvard Medical School didn't accept women. But she could not accept descrimination in any form, so she may have applied just so they would have to state their descriminatory policy in writing. She had spent three years in China as a missionary (1937 - 1940), completed her Master's Degree at Wellesley (sister college to Harvard, I think), and was ready to move to the next thing.

In the next seven months after this letter she would become pregnant and get married to my Dad (yes, in that order) and go on to raise a family of six kids while working as a geography teacher.

I only wish we had a copy of her letter to them..!!!!

Notice the address - Ogontz School.

More about Mom - -

Mom was a non-conformist. She was the youngest of three girls and was a maverick her whole life. She was a rabid anit-prejudice person, and she raised us to be totally open-minded and tollerant. Her zeal was fueled in part by her own mother's membership in the Klu Klux Klan (KKK) - and this was in Ohio.

Her stint as a missionary in China was not likely out of a devotion to the Methodist Church - I suspect it was out of a sense of adventure and a desire to help Chinese youngsters get a better chance to be a world citizen (she taught English as a foreign language). It was on her voyage to China in 1937 that she met my father, who was a steward on the Empress of Canada - literally the "Slow Boat to China".

Upon her return in 1940, she promptly enrolled in Wellesley to earn her Master's Degree (Phys Ed). If you've seen the movie, Mona Lisa Smile (with Julia Roberts), that so reminds me of my maverick mother. It was set at Wellesley about 10 years after my mom went there, but the issue of women going to college to major in getting a good husband was timeless (up until the 1970s or so).

Even when she got married and started a family, she didn't just lie down and become a suburban mom. From my earliest memory, she was the major bread winner in our family while my Dad chose to start his college education after 6 kids and 13 years of marriage so he could grow in his own way.

By the time my four older siblings had flown the coup and it was only me and my kid sister at home in high school, Mom was diagnosed with manic-depressive (bi-polar) disorder. Thinking back, she suffered/enjoyed this condition for her whole life. She functioned (rather well actually) but with some costs. For example, the zeal in her fight for equality-for-all earned her some detractors who considered her, among other things, anti-american for her disdain for the "Ugly American" image. She simply did not back down...!!!!!!

Bi-polar disorder is a mental illness, and living with a bi-polar person is not without costs. But all in all, she gave us MUCH more than she took away.

Thanks Mom. I love you and miss you ... a lot.

Rejection from a former art director at the Stranger. When I finally got my comic in the paper, I scrawled some relevant lyrics from a Jay-Z song over it. Mission accomplished.

"It's a little melodramatic, I know, but let's face it, everyone... heartbreak's not fun.

In the months before the exhibition, Zineddine Bessai set about applying for a UK immigration visa to attend the opening events. Despite appropriate credentials and the support of Cornerhouse, his request was declined. Zineddine's own experience of the frontiers placed between Europe and North Africa began to resonate with the themes explored in his work.

when he finally left his body, he forgot the keys.

For some reason, it took me a while to approach this man sitting on a bench. This project was, for a large part, a mental game. Fear of rejection, fear of being intrusive, fear of lack of skill, questioning my motives... so what held me back from talking to this man on the bench? I don’t honestly know. I generally avoid people that appear to be homeless for the simple reason that I feel I don’t have much to offer them - the transaction is very one sided. The world has already extracted a heavy toll from them and I do not want to ask more. Finally deciding to go for it, I went and sat on the bench next to him and said hello.

This is Clark. He is nearing retirement age and has one of the most interesting retirement plans I have ever heard. He plans to go teach English to adults working in the construction business in either mid or South America. He wants to help enable folks to understand how to get a job in North America, how to read construction plans, etc. He had the construction background and recently took an ESL certification course to enable him to teach. He told me he had a teaching offer in Costa Rica. Clark and I talked for close to forty minutes about a variety of topics, a truly genial person. Though things have not always gone well for this man, the world does not seem to have beaten him down. He says life has taught him that there are cycles and when some opportunity closes another will open, so he patiently waits for another door to open. He stays positive, hopeful and proud. This encounter with Clark has provided a small bit of hope, that maybe what I can offer anybody, no matter what they look like or where they are, is time to listen to them.

Taken on a day in Sydney for the Foto Riesel Foto Rally with a great group of friends in the Wollongong Pictorial Mafia.

"Total rejection of the Education Reforms of [President] Peña Nieto!"

"Those who lie to the nation: Televisa and TV Azteca [Mexico's two biggest television companies]. They distort information in 10 seconds. CNTE [Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación, the teachers' union] in permanent struggle, and not one step back. Until we have victory!"

Today turned into quite a "100 Strangers" day ... one new Stranger, two old Strangers and a rejection.

First of all though, let me introduce Jaclyn ... she and her partner were walking slowly down the street when I passed them but after only a couple of seconds of deliberation I chased after them, planted myself squarely in front of them forcing them to stop and as with Liah apologised to the man for interrupting and then posed my request directly at the lady. Jaclyn didn't reply at first but her partner asked why so I explained and Jaclyn agreed.

At no point did her partner remove his arm from around her shoulder although he seemed quite chilled throughout so I didn't get the impression that it was a protective thing. Nonetheless this forced me to go in quite close but I was quite happy with that and everybody reading this has probably seen enough of Northumberland Street in my project anyway.

I don't know much about Jaclyn - her partner had just picked her up from University and they were off to do a bit of shopping enjoying some time away from the kids (a 1 and a 2 year old). Other than that we spoke very briefly about the project and what I get out of it and she asked if I had a card which I handed to her so hopefully she will have a look. And no Jaclyn … you are not going to appear on Crimewatch, at least not for any reason to do with me - my intentions are entirely honourable!

I thanked Jaclyn and carried on wandering up the street which brought me to Liam who was performing his Faces of Disco street act again. Whilst watching Liam an extremely fashionable (and I mean Vivienne Westwood levels of fashion) gentleman passed me so I chased after him but he was in too much of a rush and politely declined - I couldn't really argue - I literally had to run to catch up with him so yes he was in a rush.

The day started however with me pausing to look around Old Eldon Square and noticing a lovely young lady wandering about but I immediately realised that I knew her - it was Fiona and she was out interviewing for BBC (Radio) Newcastle again. I waited for a chance when she wasn't speaking to someone and jumped in to say Hi. We chatted for a bit about her question for today and whether she had looked at her photo (she hadn't) and then she surprised me by asking if she could interview me about the project - it felt like ages before I managed to get an answer out and within a fraction of a second of my agreeing she had the microphone switched on and was asking me "Who are you and what do you do". The interview only lasted a couple of minutes and she doesn't yet know what she is going to do with it but she said that she would be in touch and might use it when I finish the project ... watch this space! I told her that I would probably finish my project on 21 May 2012 and funnily enough it was only when I reread her story this evening that I realised that it was as that time that I decided I wanted to complete my project over the space of a complete year

Anyway, much more importantly right now ... Jaclyn, thank you very much for taking time out to help me with my project - you have certainly added a touch of style.

a writer's rejection letter. sniff.

rejection of Joachim's sacrifice, carved by Henrik van Holt ~1536

On the back of two rejections in a row (most recently a bride-to-be on a hen party dressed as Marilyn Monroe) I struck very lucky today …

Rachel was sat on the steps of Grey’s Monument in Newcastle talking to her Mum when I approached and asked if I could take her photograph. I already had my card ready so when she asked why, I handed it over and explained about the project. As ever “why” is a very promising response and has always turned into a “yes” - on this occasion it turns out that Rachel is anything but shy and retiring and is pursuing a career in the performing arts (my second such stranger) and moreover her Dad is a keen photographer and currently building up a portfolio for her to use. With a quick “what do you think” to her Mum she agreed quite happily.

Rachel was in Newcastle today shopping for some ballet gear but I got the impression that her real passion and ambition lies with her singing. She mentioned that she had recently posted a video of her singing on YouTube so I offered to include a link with the photo if she wanted me to so she wrote down her website address so that I could find the address. The video quality is quite (actually very) poor unfortunately but Rachel does indeed appear to be a very talented singer - Chasing Pavements by Adele. I’m fairly sure she wouldn’t mind me posting her website address but as I did not actually get permission to do so I won’t (she wrote it down specifically so that I could find the video). If the photographs on her website were taken by her Dad though then he is doing an excellent job that I would love to be able to match. With hindsight I didn't catch whether her Dad is a professional photographer or amateur but he appears to have access to a studio so he at least takes it seriously.

For the second time I was interrupted during a “100 Strangers” encounter but this time I hadn’t even really got started so after a couple of non-committal responses I had to politely (I hope) explain that I was in the middle of something and the man (a fellow photographer who was admiring my camera) took his leave apologetically.

I asked Rachel to stand up and took one shot with the street as the background then asked her to stand against the monument to get a less cluttered background - I took two profile shots there then another with her looking at me smiling but on review the image pretty much picked itself - you just couldn't ignore a lovely smile like that! The focus is a bit soft but I still like this shot and the little things like the upturned collar make it a better pose than the other candidate which is nice and sharp (I'll post it in the comments).

Thank you very much Rachel (and to your Mum) for taking the time to talk to me today and taking part in my project, our meeting was quite short but it felt relaxed throughout and I enjoyed it. Good luck with your career, perhaps I will see you again someday ;).

This was my very first image accepted into PPG. It's interesting that that acceptance came up after I nearly gave up the hobby partially because of PPG rejection. :-/

Anyways, this was part of my failed 2007 PAD project. Here's the description that accompanied it:

Well, I got up early this morning and headed out to Blue Mountain Road in hopes of catching an Eastbound in the early morning light and fresh snow. Alas! The only train I caught in the 2 to 3 hours I was out and about was an eastbound coal train well before daylight. After catching a Hi-railer, I decided to call no joy, and head back.

Not wanting to head back empty-handed, I decided to swing down through Golden on the way back and see if I could catch the Beer Run. I did find him, and got this shot. I was hoping to follow him back into Arvada, but there was a switch job out on the line, so the Beer Run had to wait. I had to get back to take care of letting Oscar and Tiki out, so this was the only shot of the morning (Doh! I hate that.)

I'm not thrilled about this shot. It seems a little cluttered, and the train is mostly in the shadows (I had a couple photo locations with curves in the opposite direction planned, but never got to shoot at them). Oh well, I guess one shot is better than none (especially given the number of shots I haven't taken lately!)

I guess there's always tomorrow!

LOL...yup...I hated it, and it was my first accepted image. Go me!
