Mack® trucks power Lakeview Rock Products through all conditions

Scott Hughes, president of Lakeview Rock Products and Hughes General Contractors has owned Mack® trucks since 1977, and says he considers Mack Trucks a crucial business partner in the company’s quest for continued -success.

Located in North Salt Lake, Utah, Hughes’ company operates a number of quarries and provides sand, gravel and aggregate materials for use in everything from roads to park trails. Hughes General Contractors serves as the building and heavy construction arm and their latest division, Lakeview Asphalt, provides hot mix asphalt to paving contractors along the Wasatch front.

Hughes keeps his 14 Mack trucks working hard between the three divisions. His Mack Titans and Granite®models are spec’d from 454 to 605-horsepower, with 1,650-2,060-lb.-ft. torque and are subject to particularly harsh conditions. That’s why Hughes trusts Mack.

“They’re tough trucks, and they can handle anything we throw at them,” Hughes says. “They fit the rugged construction environment. We have to keep the wheels rolling through severe winters and brutal hot summers. We’ve got mud and snow and dust, but our Macks have held up well for us over the years. They’re good at hauling heavy in boggy conditions.”

That reliability and durability is important, and it has helped the companies develop a 90 percent repeat customer record.

“People like us when we start to work for them, and they love us when we’re done,” Hughes says with a laugh.

Some of their biggest projects include Legacy Parkway in Davis County, Utah, the Beck Street/I-15 widening in Salt Lake City, the YWCA Center for Families in Salt Lake City, the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Palisades State Park in Sterling, Utah, Tunnel Springs Park in North Salt Lake, Utah and a -number of schools and other education -facilities.

Rockview Rock Products

They are also one of only three companies in the northwest — and only 14 in the nation — certified in architectural tilt-up concrete -construction,

The family-owned company, established in 1952, has transitioned well throughout the years, always staying a step ahead of trends as well as market sentiment. During the economic downturn, they flourished due to their already lean business model.

“We’ve always been a very conservative, close, family-owned business,” Hughes says. “When the economy took a hit, we didn’t have to change course. When the belt got tight, we already had a tight belt. We actually grew through the downturn and stayed busy. Our last job gets us the next job.”

Hughes credits his local Mack dealer, Ronnie Johnson at Mountain West Truck Center, with not only sourcing the specs he needs but also keeping his trucks in good working order. Though his staff performs routine maintenance, the majority of the repairs are handled by the Mountain West Truck Center.

Johnson says he works closely with Hughes to make sure he is getting the trucks he needs.

“Hughes listens to his customers and observes trends at industry trade shows, and we usually sit down and figure out if we can work that into his business model,” Johnson says. “We try to deliver trucks that are as light-weight as they can be and make them look good without being too showboat or too shiny. The equipment looks both professional and good-looking.”

And that’s exactly the way Hughes wants them. After all, his Macks are the “face” of the company.

“We try to keep our trucks clean and well-maintained, because they are a driving billboard,” Hughes says. “All of our trucks are easily identified. You can see them from a distance and immediately know they are our trucks.”

**Franklin Battlefield/Carnton** - National Register of Historic Places Ref # 66000734/73001857, date listed 10/15/1966/1/18/1973

S of Franklin on U.S. 31/Confederate Cemetery Lane

Franklin, TN (Williamson County)

A National Historic Landmark (www.nps.gov/subjects/nationalhistoriclandmarks/list-of-nh...). includes four non-contiguous properties associated with various aspects of the conduct of the Battle of Franklin: Fort Granger, Winsted Hill, the Carter House, and Carnton and the Confederate Cemetery.

Carnton - A Greek Revival house with some Federal and Georgian influences, was built by Randal McGavock about 1825. The house contained more than twenty rooms, consisting of the main block of the house which had four rooms and a large hall one each two floors with a large ballroom on the third floor. In addition, a large ell was built on the east side, containing servants quarters, a smokehouse, workrooms, and a carriage house. This ell has since been removed.

Carnton - It was here that the bodies of the five Confederate Generals were laid out. This site demonstrated the hopelessness of the Confederate cause. It is unprecedented to lose that many Generals in one battle. (1)

Carnton played a unique part in the Civil War, perhaps never equalled by any other site. Since it was on the battlefield during the Battle of Franklin, many of the dead and dying were brought there. After dark on the day of the battle, wagons began unloading their cargoes of over three hundred wounded and dying soldiers.

Mrs. McGavock tore up every piece of white linen, damask, and cotton, as well as much of the family clothing, to bind up the wounds. On the rear veranda were placed the bodies of five Confederate generals - Pat Cleburne, John Adams, States Rights Gist, Hiram Granbury, and Otho Strahl - all killed during the battle. Here their bodies were prepared for burial. In no other battle of the war were so many generals killed. In 1866, when Colonel McGavock found that the wooden headstones of the soldiers buried on the battlefield were being destroyed, he donated two acres adjacent to his family cemetery to be used as a burying place for the dead. The bodies of 1,14-81 soldiers were moved to this plot. (2)

In addition to supporting the healing process of the physical structure in the body, massage therapy will always have a positive effect on mental health. This is accomplished by reducing the sympathetic nervous pathway activity while improving the firing of parasympathetic nervous activity. This effect alone has a substantial cascading influence over blood pressure, hormones and heart rate, thus attributing relief to anxiety, chronic stress, and even depression. Watch the video to learn about the benefits of massage therapy and have a look at the below website:

Oliver P. Posey/Edward L Doheny Mansion, 1899

8 Chester Place, Los Angeles, CA

Theodore Eisen and Sumner Hunt (Manion); Theodore Eisen (Third Floor Ballroom); Alfred F Rosenheim (Pompeiian Room)

__________

The Doheny Mansion in Chester Place was originally built by the Oliver P Posey family in 1899, by Theodore Eisen and Sumner Hunt. David Gephard and Robert Winter described the house as "rather neutral (could it be considered Chateauesque?)" According to the official Doheny website, it is a blend of styles -- "French Chateauesque [with] elements of Gothic, English Tudor and even California Mission style" -- which all combined makes it pure Californian.

On the day we visited, a film crew was in the house laying plans for an upcoming shoot. We snuck in and took a few pictures of the interior, which is spactacular. The public rooms of the house (unlike the other houses in the park) have been preserved as they were on the day Mrs. Estelle Doheny donated this manson, and the whole of Chester Place, to Mount St. Mary's College. The interior was possibly remodelled in the 1930's in the Regency Style, and if that's the case, it's was done with skill and blends perfectly with the house.

In 1905 the Doheny's added on the most famous room of the house -- the Pompaiian Room. This room was designed by Alfred Rosenheim, and features Tuscan inlayed marble floors, art glass panels, marble columns, and a breath-taking glass dome. The dome is made of 2,836 pieces of gold-favrile Tiffany glass.

After the Teapot Dome scandle, the Doheny's were concerned by the number of reporters camping outside of chester place. The Doheny's then bought out all their neighbors, to make Chester Place a private compound.

If any house is deserving of National Register status, it is this house.
