These cliffs are not protected very well. If they were, no one would be able to go see them. Some people take advantage of this and add their names. It's not all bad though, just a matter of perception. The old carvers defaced the cliffs as well and we don't seem to mind that...wait a few hundred more years and you won't mind the names from 2000 either.
