This item comprises part of a collection which is inscribed on the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register - The Convict Records of Queensland 1825 – 1842

This volume provides "A daily account of Public Labour performed by Crown Prisoners at Moreton Bay" in accordance with Governor Brisbane's instructions of 1824.

Under the main heading (as above) and the day and date, the volume is divided into sections under the sub-headings: No., Gangs, Employments, and Remarks

Details recorded under each sub-heading are as follows:

No.: the number of prisoners employed in each Gang, with the Total at the end of the list (lowest Total: 415; highest Total: 789). Gang: the type of occupation including Clerks, Overseers, Mechanics and Labourers, Splitters and Fencers, Agricultural Establishments, Camp Gang, Stock Keepers and Carters, Light Gang, Barrack Establishment, In Hospital.

Employments: where the labour was performed, how many were employed in each activity Remarks: each day this included the rations issued; other entries included thermometer readings, musters for inspection by the Superintendent and Divine Service, names of those who absconded, prisoners tried, names of those who died, schooner arrivals, new plantings and increases or decreases in stock

NOTE: This volume came to be known as "Spicer's Diary". Peter Spicer was Superintendent of Convicts from 23 August 1826 - 8 May 1839. J.B. Steele states that the register was "evidently maintained by Spicer's office clerk". However, the Commandant's Office has been chosen as the Creating Agency for this series because Governor Brisbane's 1824 instructions, and the 1829 regulations, gave the Commandant overall authority and responsibility for record-keeping and returns forwarded to Sydney.

A National Historic Landmark (www.nps.gov/subjects/nationalhistoriclandmarks/list-of-nh...).

A Plazuela is a fortified ranch with buildings, barns, and a corral all within a protective wall. The remains of a plazuela can be seen at the Abó unit of Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. This structure dates to the reoccupation period from about 1815 to 1830. Following the failure of the Abó Mission, resettlement was a slow process due to continued Apache raiding. By the 1800s, a few sheep herders were trying to return to the area due to the reliable spring water. The plazuela contained a number of rooms including a Torreon, or defensive tower, like the similar structure at Quarai. These defenses did little good against increased Apache raiding, and Abó was again abandoned around 1830.

A second reoccupation of Abó was attempted by 1869. This time, Juan Jose Sisneros moved his family to the Abó ruins. The extended Sisneros family began to build additional houses and plazuelas in the area south and west of the Abó Mission ruins. This time, the reoccupation of Abó was able to succeed and the Sisneros family continues to live in the area to this day. Many of these reoccupation structures can be seen along the Abó interpretive trail as it continues south from the mission. (1)

Warren Street, Hudson, NY

This building was built as a jail in 1801 but has been a city hall and a printing shop since then. Now it is the home of Hudson's newspaper.

The details on this are just the greatest.

St. Louis County, MO

Built in 1908 in the Renaissance style, the Castle Ballroom in St. Louis, Missouri was designed as a dance hall and dancing academy. The dance hall was one of the major venues for social dancing and dance instruction in St. Louis prior to the dawn of the Jazz Age. By the 1930s, changing tastes in music and the nature of social dancing had transformed the city’s dancing scene into one that was driven by jazz bands rather than dance orchestras. Demographics had also shifted significantly by 1930 so that the city’s largest African American neighborhood had developed around the Castle Ballroom. For the next two decades the dance hall remained an important venue for African Americans in St. Louis. Although the last dance was held sometime in 1952, the dance hall still retains integrity and awaits restoration.

**Kanawha County Courthouse** - National Register of Historic Places Ref # 78002801, date listed 1978-09-06

Virginia and Court Sts.

Charleston, WV (Kanawha County)

The Kanawha County Courthouse is the principal example of Romanesque architecture now existing in Charleston, West Virginia. The building has been the center of Kanawha County government since the date of its erection in 1892, and its site has been the location for all the county courthouses since the formation of Kanawha County in 1789. The expansion of Kanawha County after the permanent location of the West Virginia State Capital at Charleston in 1885 is reflected in the growth of the courthouse from 1892 when major additions were constructed in 1917 and 1924 that nearly tripled the original size of the building.

Kanawha County was formed by an act of the General Assembly of Virginia, effective October 1, 1789, from Greenbrier and Montgomery Counties. The new county covered an area of approximately 2,092 square miles, but did not have a courthouse in the county seat at Charlestown (Charleston). All necessary court proceedings were held in the home of William Clendemn at Fort Lee, site of the settlement of Charleston, until 1796.

County Commission President John S. Cunningham, and Commissioners W. S. Laidley and C. S. Young, selected the plans of the Richmond, Virginia, architectural firm of Shieff and Highnam for the new courthouse. The building was erected in 1892, at a cost of $153,000, in the Richardsonian Romanesque style and stood unaltered until 1917 when the Kanawha Street (Blvd.) addition was erected. (1)
