The Auburn Heights estate (within Auburn Valley State Park, formerly Auburn Heights Preserve) includes the Marshall family home and carriage house listed on the National Register of Historic Places, site of the first Stanley automobile dealership in Delaware; the Marshall Steam Museum, housing a world-class collection of vintage automobiles; a 1/8-size live steam railroad operating on the property; and approximately 456 acres of surrounding park land.
The best way to experience Auburn Heights and the Marshall Steam Museum is to attend a monthly Steamin’ Day! Climb into an antique automobile, board one of our trains, and experience what it was like to travel at the turn of the 20th century. Tour the magnificent 1897 mansion that was home to three generations of the Marshall family. You’ll find something for everyone, age 2 to 92!

Designed by CC Rittenhouse, it was constructed in 1888 of Colorado sandstone. Half of the building was destroyed by fire in 1953.
From 1880-1890, the 2nd floor housed the Adams County courts and served as county jail. It was the site of the only death within a courtroom in the history of Adams County when, in 1887, a Dr Randall who was being tried for the rape of a child in his care was shot between the eyes. No one was ever tried for his murder. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Count Jaro Von Schmidt Residence, c. 1900
1 Chester Place, Los Angeles, CA
This handsome Shingle Style graces the 23rd Street entrance to Chester Place. It's a solid piece of architecture with crisp lines and a pleasing facade. Count Jaro Von Schmidt was the first owner. Incidentally, he was also the first president of the Bolsa Chica Hunt Club, which has transformed in recent times into the Bolsa Chica Conservancy -- opposite of it's original intent. Not much else is known about the house or the owner.
The engine register counted the number of propeller shaft revolutions and served the same purpose as an odometer in a car. During conservation the "Monitor" became visible on the registers faceplate. This was the first piece of the wreck recovered that bore the name of the vessel.
