L’art de la simplicité

KAWAI Kanjirô dans son essai Nous ne travaillons pas seuls (1953).
Potier, céramiste, calligraphe, graveur, poète, philosophe… KAWAI Kanjirô (1890-1966) fait partie de ces personnages insaisissables. Membre du mouvement mingei dit de « l’art populaire », initié par son ami YANAGI Soetsu (1889-1961) en 1926, il fait l’apologie de la simplicité, du naturel et de la qualité. Façonnant des objets du quotidien, il y impose sa touche si particulière, frisant parfois le chaos asymétrique, alors tout à fait à l’opposé des valeurs du mingei. Passé maître en vernis, il renonce à l’utilisation de ceux en provenance d’Europe pour inventer ses propres mélanges naturels dans des couleurs depuis identifiées à lui comme le rouge cuivré ou le fer brun.
Dans sa volonté de s’effacer derrière ses œuvres, il ne les a jamais signées : « mon travail, lui-même, est ma meilleure signature ». De son vivant déjà un artiste adulé auquel le statut de « trésor national vivant » fut proposé mais qu’il rejeta, la ferveur pour ses réalisations ne s’arrêta pas à sa mort. Sa maison à Kyoto, ainsi que l’atelier attenant, présentent aujourd’hui certains de ses travaux et ses collections d’art populaire. Tenu par des parents de l’artiste, ce musée nous introduit dans son univers, côtoyant Japon traditionnel et modernité occidentale dans des pièces arrangées selon les deux styles. Inspirant et inspiré, KAWAI Kanjirô incarne le désir qu’a l’homme de mener une vie simple, en ce monde qui ne cesse d’imposer la sophistication.

Kawai Kanjirō (河井 寛次郎, 24 August 1890 - 18 November 1966) was a Japanese potter and a key figure in mingei (Japanese folk art) and studio pottery movements, which included Bernard Leach, Shōji Hamada, Kenkichi Tomimoto, Shikō Munakata, Keisuke Serizawa, and Tatsuzō Shimaoka, among others.

Becoming interested in pottery as a child by watching a nearby farmer who made pottery in his spare time, Kawai-san knew by the age of 16 that he wanted to become a potter. Kanjirō graduated from the Tokyo Higher Polytechnical School in 1914 and worked briefly at the Kyoto Research Institute for Ceramics. Hamada Shoji, whom he first met in Tokyo, followed Kawai to Kyoto, where the two are said to have conducted over 10,000 experiments on glazes. Disillusioned with what he felt was an unnecessarily excessive focus on studying theory at both schools, in 1920 he built his own kiln in Kyoto (a climbing kiln "noborigama") "the Shokeiyo, with eight chambers, began the "Kawai Factory" and began to give exhibitions.
Kawai was trained in the use of chemical glazes and gained wide recognition for their use while still in his early twenties. But he was ultimately dissatisfied with this early work and, thanks in large part to a chance encounter with Yanagi Soetsu and Hamada Shoji, turned instead to natural glazes, to nature, or "to the science that precedes all science - and a return to nature was my salvation". He is widely regarded as a master of glazes, especially of warm red copper (shinsha or yuriko - one of his trademark colors), rich brown iron (tetsu-yu), chrome and cobalt (gosu).
As a potter he sought to combine modern methods of manufacture with traditional Japanese and English designs. He was also an artist, calligrapher, sculptor, writer and philosopher. As a man who respected the dignity of simplicity and collected the works of poor craftspeople from all over Asia, he admired "ordered poverty" and had a profound love for the unpretentious men of the soil and made their simplicity a part of himself. His pots come in many asymmetrical shapes and show expressionistic techniques such as tsutsugaki (slip-trailed decoration), ronuki (wax-resist) or hakeme (white slip).
Kanjirō refused all official honours, including the designation of Living National Treasure, and his pots were unsigned. His pieces are on display in the Folk Art Museum of Tokyo and each year, the Takashimaya Department Store had an exhibition of his work in their Tokyo and Osaka shops. In November 1953, Kawai-san had one of his biggest exhibitions. It was at the Korin Kaku in Tokyo and over 500 of his pieces were shown.
When I was a kid I always refused to go back home from our beach vacations; so my mom told me that, at the end of summer, someone would remove the cork from the sea so it didn't make sense to stay longer anyway. Guess I found where some years later!

It was never erected.
People invented that story because they could not imagine a figure choosing a wall instead of a horizon.
The stone remembered a body.
The body remembered nothing.
Around its head two luminous circles revolved without touching,
not as a crown,
not as an orbit,
but as a patient method of preventing the face from becoming singular.
Morning crossed the rings.
Evening crossed them again.
Only the statue remained slightly elsewhere.
The vapor below did not rise from the earth.
It descended,
slowly,
as though the sky were shedding its oldest breath.
One winter afternoon a mason climbed the façade to repair a crack.
He reached the shoulder,
lifted his hand,
then stopped.
The fracture had already healed.
Not with stone.
With time.
He climbed down without speaking.
Since then,
the figure has continued to lean from the wall,
not watching the city,
but listening
for the moment
when gravity itself
forgets
which direction is below.

A Novel by Mitsushiro Nakagawa
“Synopsis”
A Palestinian group from Gaza hacks into North Korea’s cryptocurrency system, stealing hundreds of millions of dollars. Their true goal is not money—but to recreate the lost homeland of Gaza on American soil.
Amid the backdrop of hardline Republican immigration policies and a growing wave of xenophobia, a quiet plan begins to take shape: the gradual collapse of America from within.
During a speech at Madison Square Garden, Republican presidential candidate Justin Bradford is shot. Almost simultaneously in Los Angeles, former president Owen Reed is attacked at a rally for Democratic hopeful Ryan Bennett.
Two assassinations—mirroring one another—ignite a nation’s deepest divide. Yet, against all odds, Justin survives. His blood type is one in 2.5 million: the Bombay Blood Group.
The only person who can donate such blood is Anaya Patel, a community art facilitator working in Brooklyn. Her blood, stored in the Bellevue Hospital Blood Bank, is used for an emergency transfusion that saves the candidate’s life.
Jack Vance, an agent of the U.S. Secret Service, suspects a Gaza-based network behind the attacks. Together with Cameron Bartlett, the FBI Director of the Los Angeles Field Office, and Veronica Reeves, a senior investigator from New York, he begins to uncover a vast conspiracy.
Their investigation leads them to Rafi Gannam, a former architecture student at the Islamic University of Gaza, who has infiltrated redevelopment sites across Los Angeles and New York—embedding C4 explosives deep within beams and structural cores.
His targets: new residential districts where agents of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and ERO (Enforcement and Removal Operations) live—symbols of “the order America built.”
Veronica urges the President to pursue dialogue to prevent further destruction, but President Grant M. Ranford refuses to listen.
Meanwhile, the recovering Justin and his Democratic rival Ryan appear on national television, calling for unity beyond political divisions.
Their words of reason, however, are drowned out when Grant takes the stage in Iowa, defiantly declaring: “We will never bow to terror.”
Among the crowd, Rafi’s operatives have already taken their positions.
As chaos erupts and the stage collapses, Amir Nasser—once Rafi’s comrade, haunted by the memory of his sister’s death in Gaza—tries desperately to halt the chain of destruction.
But Rafi’s conviction remains unshaken.
Under the twilight beneath the Williamsburg Bridge, amid the city’s fading noise, the two men part ways.
It is the boundary between prayer and vengeance, between hope and nothingness.

共和党による強硬な移民政策と、国内にくすぶる排外感情を利用し、アメリカ社会を内側から崩壊させる計画が静かに進行していく。
共和党大統領候補ジャスティン・ブラッドフォードがマディソン・スクエア・ガーデンで演説中に狙撃され、ほぼ同時刻、ロサンゼルスでは前大統領オーウェン・リードもまた、民主党候補ライアン・ベネットの集会で撃たれる。
国家を二分する双方向の暗殺。だが、ジャスティンは奇跡的に生還する。
彼の血液型は、世界でわずか250万人に一人といわれる「ボンベイブラッド」。

標的は、ICE（移民・関税執行局）やERO（執行・送還作戦部門）の職員が暮らす新興住宅街——すなわち、「アメリカが築いた秩序」そのものだった。
ヴェロニカは、これ以上の破壊を防ぐため、大統領への対話を進言するが、現職のグラント・ランフォード大統領は耳を貸さない。
一方、命を取り留めたジャスティンと民主党候補ライアンは、テレビを通じて国民に訴えかけ、分断を乗り越えようとする。

certainty
and location.
The old dome
continued
to stand
exactly
where it had
always been.
Yet each person
leaving it
remembered
a slightly
different
building.
None
of those memories
contradicted
the others.
They merely
refused
to coincide.
The rings
did not open
a passage.
They allowed
places
to possess
more than
one presence
at once.
Smoke
crossed them
without distortion.
Only afterwards
did the air
hesitate
over
which version
of itself
should continue.
Survey maps
became
remarkably
accurate.
Each one
described
a place
that certainly
existed.
No two
described
the same one.
People
adapted
without effort.
Appointments
were still kept.
Conversations
continued.
Only now,
when someone said,

Thirty years after the Church of England took the historic step of allowing women to become priests, equality campaigners say female clergy still face “institutionalised discrimination”.
Fewer than one in three paid clergy are female, according to 2020 data – the most recent published – although the same source showed more women (55%) than men had begun training for the priesthood.
Individual churches can refuse to accept women as priests or vicars, and the Church of England also permits churches to reject the authority of a female bishop.
How can we be the national church is still discriminating against women, who represent about two-thirds of their congregations and half the population?”
Any other employer would be dealing with a sex discrimination claim. The real power is where it has always been - with the rich - and the church is and always has been very rich.
The Osprey was obviously upset with the goose. He flew around around the nest with his talons balled up like fists. He made at least two close approaches but was rebuffed by the goose. A pair of Osprey have made a nest in the trees very close to this position. They probably want this spot.

Rey refuses Unkar Plutt's offer to buy BB-8, so Unkar sends several thugs to retrieve the droid. Unluckily for them, Rey is a skilled fighter with her staff.
I wanted to make a Rey scene after the Forces of Destiny shorts were released, as well as after seeing the latest Last Jedi footage. Luckily there was still some material I didn't cover in my Force Awakens series. Sadly, this will be my last MOC for quite some time as I will be returning to university next week.

From this point on, I will have to delete photos if I wish to add more. Because I despise how Flickr has implemented their new limitations on non-paying account (We gave you the whole bread truck, but now you can have only one slice), I flatly refuse to pay for the service I feel has been yanked so rudely out from under us. (Your opinion may differ - this is just mine) There was no middle ground option to pay a small fee for +-2000 images, which I would have gladly embraced, so I am sticking to the 1000 photo limit.
It took me THIRTEEN YEARS as a Flickr user to amass a collection of 1750 carefully curated photos, so I am hardly "an abuser" of the service. In fact, I think my usage of the service was a very polite and modest amount. And yet I feel punished for having accumulated 1750 photos in 13 years. So if this is how Flickr wants to "entice me" to pay for the "Pro" level service, they have done an appallingly bad job indeed.
I hope Flickr is reading this.

As soon as the camera comes out Cocoa refuses to look at me and this staring off into the distance shot is the one I get over and over. In the woods she moves into tracking mode, nose down, tail up and really doesn't want to stop for anything, especially a photograph. It is obvious from her expression that there is somewhere else she would rather be. Didn't even realize this photo on was explore. Thanks everyone for looking!
As a baby I refused to eat the fruits.
I started eating apples at my grandmother's, as it was her main snack, and she highly recommended an apple.
During my childhood and adolescence I learned to eat and like some fruits.
In the first year of my military service: 1982-83, my main food at the base was the apples that my father used to buy and my mother used to send with me.
I earned the nickname "Miss Apple" from a friend, ( EF ) who used to come into my office every day and see me with an apple in my hand.
At that time I used to tie my handmade strawberries on my hair.

While in Arizona, I had the opportunity to visit the DaDee Manufacturing facility. I met Refuse Arizona the week before at Waste Expo and we were able to arrange a tour at the DaDee Manufacturing facility. On my way to their facility I saw The Scorpion FE Mack LR from Waste Expo pull into the Mack dealership in Phoenix, it was neat seeing that truck twice in one week in two different states. Once I arrived at DaDee Manufacturing Refuse Arizona gave me a tour that started at prefabrication and went all the way to final assembly. I had a great time learning more about the DaDee products and seeing them in person.
Big thank you to everyone at DaDee Manufacturing, they are truly an innovative company with products of the highest quality. And a special thank you to Refuse Arizona for the amazing tour, it was an honor meeting you and Waste Expo and talking about the Waste Industry.
I took this photo back in 2012, but as fall in 2021 seems to be refusing to arrive because of the heat wave we have been enduring since the beginning of October, I thought I'd update my photo with the description I wrote of my visit:
Another gorgeous fall drive! I've been wanting to see Fallingwater for years now, and yesterday was the PERFECT day to see it.
Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece is about a 2.5 hour drive southeast from my house. All the leaves were out in full fall color, and the sun shone all day long, so the journey alone was worth the trip.
But nothing could top the house! It is like a dream.
One entire wall of every room is a window overlooking the forest and stream below. Combined with the view, the soothing sound of the waterfall transforms the entire dwelling into wonderful spaces for writing or meditating or sleeping.
As I toured the house, every new area became my favorite -- bedrooms, balconies, offices, living room, swimming pool, and even the servant's quarters!
Like Cinderella hoping the glass slipper will transform her into a princess, I dreamed of being rich and living in the house.
Sadly, it was only a fairy tale; when the tour ended, I had to walk away, but the house affected me, inspired me.
I think Mr. Wright would be pleased.
