Now for the pizza lover, it's rest, relaxation and a large chicken pizza. Who says hard work never pays off?

大人の宿題「コントラスト」その③

ゴミと美

Here's a shot of my beetle friend who hopped along for a ride on my t-shirt one night when I was carrying groceries in from the car. I didn't notice him until my second trip into the house. I went back out to my car, fetched some batteries, went back into the house for the camera, switched out my batteries, and went out to the globe outside my garage. The whole time, he (?) never moved.

After shooting him on my shoulder (a contortionistic feat!) I moved him to my hand, and suddenly he got quite active. He was hard to shoot, he kept moving around, lifting himself up, antennae quivering. I finally got two decent shots out of the whole affair, and ffnally shook him off to let him explore a nearby tree. He's a leaf-eater, so, he was probably quite content.

Because Dexter flat out refuses to fetch ANYTHING, we have always had to think of other creative games with him. One of his very favorite activities is to chase down and pop balloons. After a birthday party this past weekend, we had an overstock of inflated balloons, so what better excuse to hit the Green and pop them! As you can see by his focus, he takes this activity VERY seriously.

Well, where do I start? It was Missy's 13th birthday last Wednesday. We had hired a field out for private use and ordered some special baked goodies for her, it was to be a fun day to celebrate her turning 13. Only it didn't plan out that way. Moments after this picture was taken Missy jumped clear off the bale, landed awkwardly and immediately held her back left leg up. She didn't cry or otherwise act in pain, seemed to carry on actually so we assumed it was a bad sprain. She hobbled along very carefully, not weight bearing on this leg, but still eager for her treats and continued her walk without us knowing the extent of her injuries.

We left after a further 30 mins and on returning home she became very withdrawn and spaced out. Still unable to bear weight on that leg and it was decided we should take her to the vet after advice from them during a phone call. Get to the vet and she's shaking violently as she's super stressed during vet visits but was being a good girl. On inspection the vet immediately comments that she thinks it's a fracture as she can feel bone crunching in her leg. Missy was incredibly brave, despite being in absolute agony. Not a peep from her. Anyway, we return home with pain meds and the advice to return the next morning for x-rays. Over night she was whining somewhat and very unsettled. The next morning we are referred to the Veterinary Hospital in the city. Missy was very stressed again and very difficult to examine as she was wrestling and resisting, but after some time and realising she was better behaved on the floor rather than the table, these other vets thought it felt more like a dislocated knee than a fracture and that she wasn't showing obvious signs of pain. They decided to keep her in and x-ray her. Later on that day I receive the news that the x-ray shows she has NO fracture or break to her bone as feared, but she has ruptured her cruciate ligaments and possibly damaged her meniscus too. The vet said her symptoms and behaviour even fooled her a little! She said she was in a huge amount of pain. So, with further discussion it's suggested she needs surgery and that they should keep her in overnight, ready for surgery the next day hopefully. However, come the next day I receive a call that things have taken a turn for the worse and Missy had been sick throughout the early hours of the morning and had bloody diarreah. I was fearing the worst at this stage, I really was as it just seemed like a downward spiral. The vet was to uncomfortable to put her under anaesthetic due to how ill she was feeling. So we bought her home on the advice she has strict crate rest. She was SO ill yesterday - shallow and noisy breathing, dazed, drooling, shaking violently, cold to the touch. She refused all food and continued to have bloody diarreah. She was supervised carefully throughout the day and night, given her pain meds, and by today she had perked up considerably! No more sickies, and whilst she still has some diarreah it's no longer bloody!

So, that's where we're at really. Missy still refusing most food, but looking brighter and us just waiting for a rescheduled surgery date. It's been super stressful and worrying, but fingers crossed she can make a full recovery x

Week 38: Mirrored Water Reflections

We were away at a cabin South of the Finger Lakes celebrating our 20th Anniversary and we happened to be right across the way from a marsh. So we went for a short walk so I could tackle the challenge.

I took many shots of reeds and other plant life reflected in the water, but this bucket intrigued me more.

Superstar photographer Ben Von Wong joined SmugMug on our epic company retreat this year in Park City Utah and I enjoyed getting to know him and his girlfriend Anna over the 7 day trip. When they asked me to cancel my flight home and spend 4 days driving to San Francisco with them and Nick, I knew I couldn’t refuse!

I shouldn’t have been surprised to learn that Ben, whose photographs always include people, didn’t have the patience to wait for Nick and I to do our landscape photographer thing. As long as the hike or the scene would be epic we might capture his interest long enough not to make us pack up and head somewhere else. We hiked The Narrows. We walked the Vegas strip. We explored eroded landscapes and salt flats in Death Valley. And on the last night we showed him the Milky Way for the first time with his naked eye. Ben and Anna have been creating a “selfie-series” of photographs, taking fun and unique portraits of themselves in unique places. Mobius Arch was going to be another stop in this series.

We made our way to the Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, California and arrived at Mobius Arch just after sunset. We made a quick stop to use the “Sky Guide” app to figure out when the Milky Way would align properly and went off to grab a pizza dinner. When we got back to the arch, Ben knew immediately where he’d be setting his camera down for his epic Milky Way selfie! I on the other hand, struggled for almost an hour to find a composition that I liked (for an epic landscape). That’s when I decided “you know what, let’s get in on this portrait photo!” I found a different spot to place my camera and while Ben composed his as a landscape photo, I placed my camera as portrait orientation.

To capture this photo Ben and I would set my camera on a 10-second timer. At the 8 second mark, Ben would use an app on his Android phone to trigger a 2-second timer on his camera. Meanwhile, I would grab my flashlight, right to the right of them and prepare to light-paint them. I fired a quick flash of the light on Ben to provide the light on his legs, arm, and face. Meanwhile, Nick, hiding behind the arch, lit Anna’s face and then painted the underside of the arch. Once we had a light-painted version we were happy with, Ben and Anna moved out of the scene, and I took a second photograph with a longer exposure and no lights to get a photo without strange shadows on the rocks. Lastly, we refocused on the stars, and took a 3rd photo to capture the Milky Way in all its sharpness and glory.

My first shots of the Yellow-wattled Lapwing. It is endemic to the Indian Subcontinent and is found mainly on the dry plains of peninsular India and has a sharp call and is capable of fast flight. Although they do not migrate, they are known to make seasonal movements in response to rains. These are conspicuous and unmistakable birds having a triangular wattle at the base of the beak.

These Lapwings like most others were very skittish and refused to let me come close. So I actually drove on pretty rough terrain to get as close as I could. I have always been able to get closer to birds when I am in the car.

“No!” she shrieked. “NO! This cannot be happening. . . . It cannot . . . I refuse to accept it!”

“You didn’t realize this was coming?” said a high girlish voice, sounding callously amused, and Harry, moving slightly to his right, saw that Trelawney’s terrifying vision was nothing other than Professor Umbridge. “Incapable though you are of predicting even tomorrow’s weather, you must surely have realized that your pitiful performance during my inspections, and lack of any improvement, would make it inevitable you would be sacked?”

“You c-can’t!” howled Professor Trelawney, tears streaming down her face from behind her enormous lenses, “you c-can’t sack me! I’ve b-been here sixteen years! H-Hogwarts is m-my h-home!”
