@ Barcaldine refuse tip or "dump" as we like to call it - The Black Kite (Milvus migrans) is dusky blackish-brown in colour but appears black from a distance. Darker patch behind the eyes. Long wings, the tips reach the long tail when perched. Tail is forked, best seen in flight but also visible on perch. Spread wings have gently curved leading and trailing edges; the end are conspicuously 'fingered' with darker coloured feathers; trailing edge feathers are lighter coloured when viewed from below. Grows 45 to 55 centimetres, wingspan 120 to 140 centimetres.
Flies with a slow floating glide and occasional wing flaps. Glides and soars with the tail fanned and twisting to use breezes and updrafts. Wings usually held slightly bowed with the outer wings drooping slightly. Often glides just above or between the treetops maintaining a glide in still air with an occasional wing flap. Sometimes a flock of black kites soars to such heights that individual birds can barely be seen from the ground.
Rarely seen alone, usually in flocks. Inhabits open plains, timbered watercourses, rubbish dumps, often around homesteads. Scavenges carrion and rubbish around coastal towns and stations. Found Australia-wide except the south-east corner. Greatest numbers in Queensland and the north of Western Australia.

Hello all!
You may have noticed that I've been somewhat MIA here on Flickr for a while. The reason behind this madness? Ian and I just recently decided/found out that we'll be moving back to California. This is a bittersweet thing, because we both LOVE Pennsylvania and do NOT want to leave it. However, Ian was offered his old job back in CA making a pretty good amount of money, and the opportunity is "too good to refuse".
We are leaving on November 8th - so soon! So, we've been trying to pack, find a place to live in CA, find a moving company, etc. On top of that, I've had 3 weddings worth of pictures to edit (that I am still not done with!), in addition to regular family/maternity shoots I've done. With everything that's been going on, I haven't had a ton of time for Flickr, which explains why I've fallen behind on many of your photostreams. :(
So... that's the update. Life is crazy. Once things settle down I'll be back to my full-time Flickring! (Assuming I don't die from stress in the meantime.) Love you!! xoxo
My puff pastry refused resolutely to puff. More heat and longer in the oven. No, it just charred. But it was too good to waste so camouflage with a bit of sauce!
It was nice for all that 👍

The days of the rear open loading refuse vehicle were numbered as wheelie bins were beginning to make an impact., no longer would we hear the pop/splat of a black bin bag bursting when the compressor blade was used.

I repeatedly asked a passer by if he was interested in having his caricature done, but he refused to be drawn...

Last year on a hot Summer day SoCalRefuse and I headed towards Pomona to see all the Refuse trucks going up sale. All of the Refuse trucks were either from ESD or other city departments from San Diego. There were 3 2007 Amrep ASL’s, a Pak-Mor RL and 3 Roll Offs from STS and Amrep. Looking at the ASL’s, it looks like they have had better days, it seemed like each one has at least one problem. Missing grippers, cracked and rusted tailgates and hoppers and missing headlights. All the ASL’s and Pak-Mor RL were supposedly for out of state buyers only so unless major refurbishment was done, most likely none of the Amreps are the Ex ESD Recology or CR&R trucks.
I have many actions packed videos that I filmed recently and I plan to post in the next few months. Happy New Year everyone!
Thank you US Auctions and SoCalRefuse.

I had to travel again and needed to pack up the computer, but Hermione didn't want to move from the warm laptop power brick.
( I tried to tap on the table to get her attention for the shot, but she mistook this as me leaving a treat for her. While I didn't get my picture with her looking at me; she did get off the power brick so I could pack it)

I can't wait to go back there :o)
Once full and bushy, this last bit of grass left on its stem along the dam being illuminated by the sun caught my eye for something different. I found its delicate details very interesting. Posted several pics of these in there glory a while back.
Another very bold advert from the 1950 British Commercial Vehicle annual this for Bedford trucks and commercial vehicles, a wholly owned subsidiary of Vauxhall Motors at Luton in Bedfordshire. The marque had come into use in 1931 when Bedford, owned since 1925 by the American General Motors, dropped the use of their Chevrolet marque on commercial vehicles constructed at Luton. Bedford, assisted by American know how one suspects, gained a fine reputation in the UK and associated oversees markets and as the advert shows they produced a wide range of chassis from vans, through trucks to tractor units and single deck bus/coaches. Many Bedford chassis were used as the base for specialist vehicle construction such as ambulances, 'municipal vehicles' such as refuse trucks and the company also worked with Scammell Motors to produce semi-trailers. The Dunstable plant closed in the 1980s when the Bedford range was much reduced and seemingly 'old fashoned' and the heavy range was 'sold off'. The marque was retired in 1991 although some vestige of the works continues with GMM vehicle plant at Luton still producing vans that would have flet very much at home under the Bedford badge.
