Photographer:

My name is Gaone Lesokwane. I am a girl of 14 years and in school in Botswana.

I first realized that I had a very poor eye sight by the year 2000 when I was in standard 3. In class, I would sometimes see nothing from the chalkboard whereas there was something written there, this forced me to go to the front so that I can see better there and other students got angry with me because I was obstructing their view. Sometimes I would look at the red colour and say it was pink. This affected my studies very much. As time went on, my eyesight got poorer and poorer and nothing was clear to me at all.

I am a softball player. Sometimes when it was time for me to bat, I would swing the bat even if the ball was very far away. On other occasions I would just see myself on the ground, knocked down by the ball that I was waiting to hit. I remember one day when we were in the field, I thought I was running towards the ball but guess what…, one of my friends was throwing a stone at me, knowing that I cannot see properly, and they laughed at me.

There came the day that I will never forget. My mother took me to EYE CARE OPTOMETRISTS where I got tested and it was discovered that I was short sighted. I was told to come and get my glasses the following day and I could not wait to see myself in glasses and seeing like everyone. Now I can see even from the back of the class. Even colours, they now appear to be different from those I used to see before. My world seem to have changed completely. I have also improved in my academic work. and I can see things from a distance and very clear than I used to see them without glasses.
