The latest exhibition opened last week in the Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, so I took my camera to work on Thursday and popped on in after work to take a few snaps.
Ten minutes in, ipod blaring to drown out the hundreds of art-types muttering art-type things about art, and I'm trying to get a good shot of The Core. Then I start to hear someone shouting somewhere at the other end of the gallery. Assuming some kids are doing what kids do these days (I am getting too old), I mind my own business.
Then the noise ramps up with huge booms echoing through the hall. Looking around now I still can't see where the noise is coming from. All I can see is hundreds of others doing the same as me.
Boom-Crash-Shout.
Crash-Shout-Boom.
Then I see it. A small, middle-aged man in spectacles has gone postal. He's striding around shouting, tearing books up, throwing books around, and pulling over the hundreds of bunk beds that make up the exhibition. An audience of about 200 watches intently, intreaged and somewhat stunned, all while keeping a safe distance from the madman as he charges around.
WORLD WAR THREE! WORLD WAR THREE! AND ALL WE'RE LEFT WITH IS BOOKS!
All of this to the sounds of Beach Boys - God Only Knows.
Utterly surreal.

Unfortunately, at the time I only had my 30mm lens and couldn't get through the crowds to take any decent pics of the guy in action. It wasn't long before the security guards caught him, at which point they closed the area and kicked everyone out. Luckily managed to get some shots of the destruction on my way out.

Further Notes: Smith and Ritchie were established in Edinburgh in 1853. The firm were multi colour offset printers who were specialist suppliers to the food packaging industry. They were located at Amphion Works in Albert Street. In 1963 Smith & Ritchie became the first printing company in Scotland to use a gravure press and produced reel fed work up to five colours. Smith & Ritchie moved to Livingston in 1986 and in 1991 became the first printing firm in Scotland to use a 10 station gravure press.
Smith & Ritchie have subsequently moved out to Livingston and survive today as Amcor Flexibles S & R. Amcor are originally an Australian company and now have operations in 36 countries around the world specialising in many printed products of which the food packaging that Amcor Flexibles S & R is one.
History: Smith & Ritchie were located at 71 Albert Street, Edinburgh.

Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction Shane Simpson announced the members of his Advisory Forum on Poverty Reduction as he invited British Columbians to share their ideas to help shape the Province’s first Poverty Reduction Strategy.
The 27 people appointed to the minister’s Advisory Forum on Poverty Reduction bring a broad range of expertise to their roles, and will provide their insights and guidance to the minister as the Poverty Reduction Strategy is developed. The forum members represent multiple sectors, including poverty advocates, people with lived experience, Indigenous people, academics and experts, along with representatives of the labour and business communities.

The cost of disasters were summed up last night in dollars lost, people displaced, lives lost as one would expect at a meeting hosted by Columbia University with the theme "From Sendai to Rio -- Cultivating a Disaster-Resilient Society for Sustainable Development."
However, what also shone through in this major debate on the theme of disaster risk reduction in advance of the Rio+20 conference, were the unexpected ways in which disasters can affect our lives driven by new forces which Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute, said "we are not ready for."

The European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (EFDRR) is intended to serve as the forum for exchanging information and knowledge, coordinating efforts throughout the Europe region and for providing advocacy for effective action to reduce disasters. Moreover, it shall be devoted to contemporary issues of importance needed to promote a good political climate for implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action.
Hosted by the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning, the Chair of the EFDRR, the meeting is co-organized in collaboration with the Council of Europe (EUR-OPA) and UNISDR Europe.
The purpose of the meeting is to facilitate discussion, exchanges and synergies towards disaster risk reduction activities in Europe and to provide inputs from European HFA Focal Points to the Post-HFA consultations.
