I teach in Jenison, Michigan, and my classroom has 3 worm bins for our lunch scraps every year. Here is a picture of us feeding the worms.

The story:
I've tried to grow nice cabbage for years. Last year I started a very small worm farm with a pound of worms. I brew a casting tea with castings, molassas, and aged chicken poop...I have a small fish tank bubbler in my tea barrel and after brewing for 72 hours each plant gets a cup of tea. OMG! The plants are healthy, huge and bug free. I love my worms.

The story:
This is a photograph of my first-ever vermicompost harvest! For fun I patted it into a "vermicastle" and even George-the-Cat was impressed! This was in November 2010, using a Worm Factory 360. This gardening season I squandered all the vemicompost I'd saved on my tomato plants, which grew in two 4' x 4' "square foot" gardens. Homemade vermicompost and water were the only ingredients I added to the garden and it was a spectacular harvest! Thanks to the worms I grew tomatoes galore, enough to share with friends, neighbours, and passerbys! I harvested more tomatoes than I weigh, and all from a tiny urban micro-garden in Zone 4, in Canada, using a Worm Factory 360 wormery! At work I tuck my spent tea-bags and apple-cores in an old plastic soap-dish to tote home to feed my worms! Whenever I'm caught "dissecting" a tea-bag by a colleague (removing the staples so the worms won't be scratched), I have an opportunity to talk about vermicomposting!

Back in October 2013, we too were excited that the Iranian and American presidents broke 34 years of diplomatic silence between our countries by speaking on the phone with each other. President Rouhani tweeted that at the end of their collegial conversation President Obama had said goodbye [khodahafez] in Persian : )

image of the day and a nightime shot across rex park and the local recycling point. used the car as a tripod as had to go for a long exposure and then i cross processed it to within an inch of its life! noisy and messy was the aim as this recycle point is not exactly inviting and has very little light at night ... really doesnt encourage you to drop off your recycling as not really the best place to be at night, what with the local wildlife!
The story:
One day I decided to plant an avocado stone. Having done no research I mixed some vermicompost with soil and put the stone in and watered it. I waited and waited and waited and watered and waited and nothing happened. I put the pot on a ledge by a window and watered it sporadically. After what seemed like months I was ready to throw the whole experiment out. As I took the pot off the shelf I noticed that something had sprouted. Since I usually get random sprouts (some can be seen in the picture) from my vermicompost I wasn't sure that it was my avocado that was growing. Over time the leaves became recognizable. I still add vermicompost some times and end up pulling the extra plants out. This is my first successful attempt at growing any thing with my vermicompost.

Found this little recycling bin at the dollar store today and knew right away I needed it for a photography prop.

The story:
This is a picture of my green original Worm Factory in my sun room next to my Parrot's cage. I received the Worm Factory just before Thanksgiving. I have been using a homemade worm bin for almost 2 years and was not really happy with how difficult it was to harvest the worm castings due to the weight of the bin after a few months. Also the bottom layers of castings and bedding always seemed too wet. After 2 weeks, working with the worms is much easier and the bedding looks better. When I set up the Worm Farm I transferred most of my worm bin to the 3 trays. All the trays are in use and look full because I put the most processed parts in the bottom, the least process parts in the middle and new bedding in the to top receive new food contributions. When the top try becomes full, I will harvest the bottom tray and set it up as the new top try. I am very happy with the worm farm and look forward to many years use.

Since Earth Day I've decided to be a little "greener." I always take my plastic bags back to Walmart to recycle, but today I bought 4 reusuable bags and will buy more the next time. I really hate the plastic bags.... especially when they just put a few things in each and you come home with tons of bags. My 4 new bags were stuffed full today and it felt so good!
