April 21, 2018. Went to the Centacles behind EFI in Brighton. Laid in the grass with Wendy and dozed under a warm sun. Lots of birds moving through, saw about 9 flickers.
We didn't get any good shots of this bird with its wings in the up position, I liked this one where its banking just enough to get a nice look at both wings and still have some eye contact.
Redtail hawks come in many flavors. The darker ones are some of my favorites.
I originally identified this bird as a "dark-morph", but upon further research it is most likely a rufous morph or intermediate color phase.
Redtails are highly variable in their plumage and a dark bird can be a rufous or intermediate phase or a dark morph. It's often a tough call depending on lighting conditions, etc., but a fun challenge none the less with this species.
