I'd really rather he was perched on a stump or a tree branch, but ah well...we take what we can get.

I realize this may look like a zoo picture, but this is a wild bird who seems to like perching on a post by the side of the road. As long as we stayed in the car, it didn't fly away. So we rolled down the windows and took photos.
I only saw six hawks the entire 1,000 miles of travel. Hadn’t intended to use this for the 365, but with editing decided I could salvage it.

Found this Red-tailed Hawk hunting for voles in a field east of Calgary, AB. Presume she was a youngster as she was happy to let me watch her from across the road for quite a while.
I was lucky enough to see a pair of Red-tailed Hawks putting on a show for each other in some pair bonding exercises.
I saw this immature red-tailed hawk perched over the path I was on. I slowly approached while taking photos, then eventually realized that it didn't matter how close I got. I walked around and underneath it. It was listening to a squirrel, and looked like it was trying to figure out how to capture it for lunch.
I am very fortunate to have Red-tailed Hawks nesting in the woods behind my house. I see them every day but don't get many photo opportunities. Sometimes i get lucky and they fly close to the deck.

Rounding a bend on one of the trails at Reifel, I stumbled upon this beautiful young Red-tailed Hawk that was just sitting in the path. Concerned for its well being, someone summoned the sanctuary staff to come and look at him. We pondered whether to call O.W.L., the rehab centre for raptors when the hawk made a lunge for a tree. Wings and tail looked intact, but he did have a rather scruffy hair do. We figured he must have smacked into a tree branch going after a small bird. He was just a bit stunned and settled into a tree to rest. After about twenty minutes, he left, apparently none the worse for wear.
