Before the Sumas Prairie flooded a couple of years ago we use to get numerous raptors wintering over. The flooding killed off a lot of the rodents who were the food supply, so the raptors had to find different hunting grounds. Maybe this winter will be better, too soon to tell though.
It always happens this way. I know when I find a hawk perched he's not going to like it that I am spying on him and he will take off. Happens every time. Funny thing is, I'm never ready with the camera when he actually does leave. Raise camera, focus and shoot, instead of "focus, shoot". Shoot!!

The red-tailed hawk is a bird of prey that breeds throughout most of North America, from the interior of Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies. It is one of the most common members within the genus of Buteo in North America or worldwide. Wikipedia
A photographer must look different if you turn your head upside down. Spent five minutes with this bird, preening, peering, shifting from limb to limb. This was my favorite pose of the show.
The look says it all - after his failed attempt to catch a vole under the snow. Not sure if this was an angry look or a look of shame.
Milford, CT:
This young hawk had just finished off a substantial meal (evidenced by the squirrel fur on its talons and the almost comically swollen crop) when I came upon it. I watched as it lazily cleaned off its beak and toes, then stretched its legs, shaking off the post-meal sedation before taking flight.
I am very fortunate to have Red-tailed Hawks nesting in the woods behind my house. I see them every day but don't get many photo opportunities. Sometimes i get lucky and they fly close to the deck.

An adult Red-Tailed Hawk is kind enough to help me learn to use my new camera to photograph birds circling overhead. NOTE: I need a lot more work on this. Because I was shooting up into the sky on a sunny day, I had to do a lot of lightening on this image in order to show the hawk accurately. And I was having problems following the bird at high zoom, which is why there is not a lot of resolution here, it's a huge crop.

I was watching this pair of hawks for some Coot action ( Coot being their regular prey here) when they flew away to west and I followed. To my surprise in just few minutes one has already caught an American Coot and was working on it when the female ( guessing from size) jumped in to claim the prize which it eventually lost to thick foliage below.
May be they are getting close to breeding season and male is trying to prove that it can hunt and provide for the family....
I don't often post an entire series but occasionally I get a set that I enjoy enough to do so. This Red Tailed Hawk and I had an hour of uninterrupted time as it posed, preened and cleaned itself. First in the park, and then on a fence of a yard that bordered the park. Finally taking off into a tree, where it sat for just a few seconds as if to say good-bye. Then flew up into the branches and out of sight. A most heart warming experience.
Standing on a pile of lava rocks blown over a hundred miles away from the eruption site of Lassen Peak from 1914-1917. Now Butte County is littered with lava as well as lave rocks as is other Counties here in Northern California.
So it's a fitting sight to see one of our birds of prey resting and scanning the area for prey. These are truly majestic birds and a delight to see while birding in Butte County, California.
