About the size of your pinkey nail!

Weed or wildflower, take your pick. Death Valley has it in their wildflower guide. It is not native, it came from Europe and Asia. I love it, is a great ground cover, and does not produce a nast y burr seed.

The shadow projected on wall looks simple, and pretty.

Redstem ceanothus is a common shrub in the open dry montane understory at the north end of the Cabinet Mountains, west of Libby, Lincoln County, Montana. Broad deciduous leaves with a main tridentate leaf venation distinguish this species from other Ceanothus. Common in Montana only in the northwestern-most counties.

Ceanothus sanguineus, taken at Mount Rainier National Park

These look to me like giant herbs rather than trees.

Also, the individual fronds look like huge green feathers.
