Note from Ajilvsgi: The mature seedpod of this European native is quite showy and is the basis for most of the plant's common names, such as ALFILERILLO, FILAREE, PIN CLOVER, PIN GRASS, PINK NEEDLE, and STORKSBILL. The family name is from the Greek word geranos, meaning "crane," while the genus name is derived from the Greek word erodios, meaning "heron." These names are in reference to the unusual shape of the fruit, which resembles the head of these birds. Cultivated geraniums are from this family, with most of them coming from the South African genus Pelargonium. Many species of the geranium family (including cranesbill) are used medicinally and for the fragrant oils.
Other common names: Redstem Stork's Bill, California Filaree and Alfilaria

Erodium cicutarium, also known as common stork's-bill, redstem filaree, redstem stork's bill or pinweed, is a herbaceous annual – or in warm climates, biennial – member of the family Geraniaceae of flowering plants. It is native to Macaronesia, temperate Eurasia and north and northeast Africa, and was introduced to North America in the eighteenth century, where it has since become naturalized, particularly of the deserts and arid grasslands of the southwestern United States. Truly oddly named! Telemacro of this tiny flower along Beaver Lake Road in Lake Country, BC.

I stopped for a few minutes to remove a small rock that snuck into my shoe. It took a couple of tries to get it gone. Crafty devil. So after I twisted and turned and gyrated to keep my sock off the dirt & rock in the path I finally got my foot back into my shoe. Then I spotted this little weed in the breeze next to where I put my foot down. I didn't spend much time shooting it since Nancy hadn't stopped and I needed to catch up - That is my story & I'm sticking with it regarding this not quite in focus image.
Coastal Heron's Bill, Red Stemmed Filaree, Redstem Stork's Bill (erodium cicutarium) - Invasive non-native
Top - Candytuft, Photinia
2nd Row - Apple blossom, Primula auricula
3rd Row - Viburnum davidii, Redstem Filaree (a common weed)
4th Row - Vine Maple, Laurel
Flower of Common Stork's Bill (Erodium cicutarium), also called Redstem Stork's Bill. Belonging to the most interesting Geraniums, I think. Both ecologically by it's pioneering ability and competitional success (by basically avoiding competition) and physiologically by its amazing seed dispersal mechanism.
