Ran into some fox kits on my walk this morning. Beyond these shots, I have a few dozen mosquito bites to prove it.

taken at 8;15 pm. fox kits playing.

Apparently, the fox pups have dispersed away from any active dens, and they are probably out and about with their parents learning what it takes to hunt for themselves and live on their own. I am guessing that this is mostly being done at night since I seldom see the parents or the pups these days. At the time this photo was taken, I’d often see the male fox out in broad daylight making the rounds of the neighborhood in search of whatever food he could find to take back to the family. Nearly always on the move and seldom lingering, he quickly roamed about with obvious intensity.

On this day, I was gazing out a window in the back of the house when I saw the fox snooping around places where chipmunks have tunnels. The fox knew of these places and often came by in case the chipmunks were a bit too far from the tunnels to get into them before he could snatch them. After no success in that endeavor, he trotted over to the shredded leaf pile you see in the picture and plopped down for a rest. During his stay there, he yawned, he stretched, he napped, he scratched, and he gawked around. For 10 or 15 minutes, he seemed to be just taking it easy. Until I saw this, whenever I had seen him, he was active and intent. He was lean, perhaps hungry himself. And he looked tired. For a few minutes, I got a peek into a bit of behavior that I hadn’t expected to see. In this photo, I see contentment. Within minutes, the intensity returned, and he was back on the hunt.

Lake Clark National Park, Alaska

I took a 2nd walk late this afternoon, hoping to see my little red friend. It's been awhile.

I walked through both fields, and was making the turn to go back home when it came trotting out of the woods and trotted across the field. It suddenly stopped when it saw me. I hope this is a female, and she'll den nearby. Hopefully I'll get to see some young ones in the spring.

(the white ground btw, is covering the soccer club put down on part of the field....I think there is seed under there)

Red Fox, Livingston County, New York

Any time a Red Fox comes to visit I'm ready with a camera. Taken from my front yard.

We were walking in the area with the foxes for over an hour and a half and they became very relaxed and would even lie down and nap...not concerned with our presence at all. I believe this is the adult female of the group.

Thanks to all who view my pictures.

Katie doesn't like the red fox peeping in, but he isn't paying any attention to her. He's very sweet, our favorite neighbor.

Far Ings NR, North Lincolnshire. This lovely animal just walked past the hide on the ice. It was far to close for the lens.

[Speak of prairie smoke blooming,]

Speak of prairie smoke blooming,

and asters, hyssop, vervain,

the whole prairie aswirl in points of light

as if the night sky

had turned inside out

of the night sky pulling up its skirts

of an owl with a mouse in its heart,

a coyote with an owl in its heart,

a sharp-shinned hawk red as sunset

of leadplant heaving into purple,

aster spindled as dawn,

blazing star holding their fans aloft

of switchgrass, sideoats grama,

indiangrass, how they move

with such piety

of the moon and below it fox,

hunger following each

of the path to the water

of potholes where mergansers,

coots, pintails, dip

as if they are in holy water
