Greenville Public Works Recycling Coordinator audits a recycling collection on Monday, October 12, 2020. The audits are performed to determine common contamination issues that can be addressed through educational campaigns. The most common contaminates are styrofoam, bagged materials, lawn waste, and food items.
Residential single-stream collection is hand-sorted at the ECVC Recycling Sorting facility, where contamination (non-recyclables, and other materials not being accepted) lead to increased processing costs and lower sorted material value. Non-recyclable materials, and materials not being accepted, are ultimately sent to landfills after sorting, but at a much greater cost than if disposed of through regular garbage collections.

This was my first trip to the recycling plant. It was a 20 minute drive; did I help the environment at all? At least it was beautiful.
This Lovely skein of yarn was produced from recycled/preloved wool yarn.
This yarn was originally a grey color; I overdyed the skein in vibrant shades of turquoise, aqua and green with highlights of magenta and fuschia. The grey undertones give the colors a muted, less 'neon' look.
I turned stackable recycling bins into a two-level litterbox + hangout spot for BeBe. Lured her in with some catnip. She never wants to leave, now.

G pulled this stuff out of the recycling can and designed this truck (yes, that's what it is) himself. So proud! He especially liked the part where I got out my glue gun so that we could attach everything!
Discarded Paper
4th Grade, Montclair Elementary, Oakland , CA. 2008
Students transformed a 2-D material, paper, into a 3-D creature sculpture by folding and gluing construction paper. Then they named and wrote character descriptions about their creature.
The students created an environment for their creatures. The collaborative piece, titled "Montclair Menagerie" was entered in Oakland's Re-Cycle Art Contest where it earned an honorable mention and was exhibited in city hall.
