Bush taxi station
Manakara (Madagascar) - Even if you booked your tickets the day before, it is always recommended to arrive well before the official departure time of the bush taxi, even if I have never seen a bush taxi leave on time. Being one of the first at the foot of the vehicle means you are sure to have the reserved seat. It is important to choose your seat carefully because in a bush taxi, you are packed in like sardines. The best seats are in front where there is a little more space so as not to have your chin on your knees. This is important when you are leaving for a journey of 6 to 15 hours or more.
Bush taxis operate like charters. They only leave when all the seats have been sold. You should also know that two seats will be shared by three passengers. If there are two of you, buy three seats so as not to travel with a stranger half on your lap.

This morning was a lovely dramatic sky. Went down to Mahons Pool with Kajo and coincidently ran into Xenedis (aka Jay).
Sunrise started as a bit of a non-event, but then eventually the sun broke through the clouds to give quite a dramatic dawn.
Kajo, likes photographing "on the edge"... literally. It was funny watching him sprinting back whenever a large wave headed to the rocks.

The evening view from Lago Grey towards Cerro Paine Grande. Note the icebergs underneath the mountain!
I did some cross processing and tone mapping on this shot. But, to be quite honest, the original was pretty much like this. Only filter used is a polaraiser to get the nice deep blue sky and fluffy clouds.

I highly recommended a visit to the Falkland Arms if you are a fan of lovely old pub interiors that don't seem to have changed since the 18th century. The bar area, the stone roofed part, is basically one small room of low dark ceilings, a flagstone floor, wooden settles and ancient mullioned windows with a huge open fireplace. The dining area rambles through the adjacent cottages and the toilets used to be a visit outside and back through the gap in the hedge to the cottage with the light above the door, but they have now been made accessible through the pub itself.
It's a little while since I've been in and I hope the open fire has remained the same with just a basket on the hearth for burning logs.
The Chelsea Set/designer clothes brigade have moved in en masse to the exclusive Soho Farmhouse spa hotel which is just a few fields away, and although they don't tend to trouble the pub too much, that fire can leave you smelling a bit kippered so I should image not too popular with those wearing designer labels.
Then you’ll understand the bear. If you still read books, Richard Wagamese’s books are well worth your time.
'The Harry Potter Tree', Blenheim Park, Oxfordshire.
This took me totally by surprise as I rounded a corner on the narrow winding footpath around this part of the lakeshore. (And it is quite scary).
Very few people around despite the promise of decent weather, and I had the place to myself.
This amazing Cedar of Lebanon had role in the 2007 film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and stands overlooking the lake and bridge, close to the place I took a recently posted image of them.
Now sensitively fenced off by a wicker fence to avoid over-excited children (many now adults) doing any damage it is probably part of the original planting by Capability Brown when he created the lake and landscaped the park between 1763-1774.
The tree is only a few yards from the bridge on a very beautiful, unsigned and easily to miss path that winds along part of the lakeshore and woodlands and can be part of a very attractive series of looping walks.
It can also be accessed FREE OF CHARGE as it is one of the public footpaths that cross the park.
(The Blenheim Palace website doesn't mention this annoying gap in their extraordinary commercialisation of the estate. Unless I've misread it there is a very hefty entrance fee of £28 that says 'Park and Formal Garden Only'. Fine(ish) if you want to visit the formal gardens which I wouldn't recommend at this time of year.
However I suspect by the amount of people strolling around, this is not policed, and a friendly blind-eye is turned to locals and dog-walkers.)
There are two free public footpath entrances quite close to each other just on the outskirts of Woodstock on the Chipping Norton road. As the road drops down to the little river as it leaves Woodstock, there is an entrance through a green gate that looks like a driveway entrance (painted ubiquitous Farrow and Ball 'Lichen' green as is the unspoken law in this part of the world.)
The other entrance is about 100 yards up the hill at the end of the raised pavement...
Both completely legal, loved and well used.

I recommend this drive to anyone who has a pickup or high ground clearance vehicle. It is a beautiful drive. It is advisable, however to carry a chainsaw, bar oil, extra chains & plenty of gas as the road is sometimes blocked by fallen trees. I went thru there during a windstorm and there were 3 trees down & across the road.

This was one of my destinations on this trip - Hopi Point. Gary Ladd recommended it for sunsets and sunrises. This was my scouting trip.
I took a little winter trip to the South Rim. Hardly any crowds at this time of year. Temperatures in the upper 20's during the day, mid teens at night with windchills into the single digits. I am well prepared for these temperatures and was comfortable most of the time. I stayed at the El Tovar Lodge.

This viewpoint offers panoramic and breathtaking views of the canyon along the scenic Hermit Road. An ideal location for sunrise or sunset, Hopi Point also offers five views of the Colorado River. Vault toilets available.

Stop number four along the west rim shuttlebus (the red route) is Hopi Point, the northernmost spot on this part of the south rim, and the first point where much more of the western Grand Canyon comes into full perspective - another 20 miles, since the Colorado begins a big bend northwards, allowing views all the way to Havasupai Point and the Great Scenic Divide. Hopi Point has a fenced viewing area next to the road, and a vista over the canyon centered on Dana Butte, a flat mesa 2,000 feet below the overlook. Salt Creek runs to one side, meeting the Colorado at a series of rapids, while Monument Creek is on the other side, joining the river at another set (Granite Rapids).
Opposite Hopi Point on the North Rim are a group of prominent mesas either side of Trinity Creek, named after figures from ancient Egypt - largest are Isis Temple, Horus Temple and Osiris Temple. Like many other Grand Canyon features their names were assigned by writer and geologist Clarence Dutton in the 1880s.
Because of the wide-ranging, unobstructed views, Hopi is the most popular place on the west rim for watching the sun set.

Vromans Bookstore (www.vromansbookstore.com/) is a Pasadena tradition. Founded in 1894, it is the oldest bookstore in Southern California. It really was in trouble in fall 2020 due to the Covid pandemic. The owner asked the community to help -- and the community came out and took advantage of curbside service, delivery by mail, giftcards -- and the store was saved and is back to thriving. If you are ever in Pasadena and like bookstores, this one is a sure winner.
