The Arabic letter that forms the central motif of Ali

Omar Ermes's painting-c—is a letter that can be read in a variety of ways, depending on its context. In classical Arabic, the letter resembles (yã); in North African Arabic however, that letter's lower dots are typically dropped, as seen here. Ermes may also have representeds ('alif maqsura). In so doing, he produced a letter that is open to multiple interpretations and meanings.

The abstract imagery of the work is complemented by a poetical quip that the melody of a songbird, while being sweet, can also be fatally overwhelming—in other words, in joy there is also sorrow.

When it was morning, he went to the Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and informed him about that as if he considered that the recitation of that Sura by itself was not enough.
