"According to legend, one should hold a borage in both hands, softly recite the name of his love and then let the borage fall into the water. If the borage moves with the water, the love for nothing is determined. If the borage floats quietly in the water, the love will last forever "
"Der Legende nach sollte man einen Borretsch in beiden Händen halten, leise den Namen seiner Liebe vortragen und den Borretsch dann ins Wasser fallen lassen. Bewegt sich der Borretsch mit dem Wasser, so ist die Liebe zu nichts bestimmt. Wenn der Borretsch leise im Wasser schwimmt, wird die Liebe ewig dauern"
Spilled salt has a long history associated with bad luck. This idea dates back to ancient and medieval times when salt was precious, making it unlucky in both practical and symbolic ways.
The most well-known way to counteract the bad luck from spilled salt is to throw a pinch of it over the left shoulder. This is believed to blind or ward off evil spirits, including the Devil, who were thought to lurk just over your left shoulder.
An artistic reference to salt is in Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’, where Judas is depicted as knocking over a salt cellar. This reinforced the idea that spilled salt is linked with betrayal or misfortune.
Some cultures adopt different versions of the ritual (like throwing it over the right shoulder), depending on their spiritual beliefs about where evil spirits dwell.
In some European traditions, you may also need to toss three pinches of the spilled salt or recite a short phrase for protection.

For the Smile on Saturday challenge: "Beads"
Using beads for meditation - focusing the mind, calming the mind - many spiritual traditions have used beads in this way.
These particular beads are Rudraksha Mala prayer beads. The Mala is a rosary containing 108 beads. It is used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra, a practice known in Sanskrit as japa.

DINGLY DELL - LINDISFARNE
Fading ideals and memories
hidden beneath the stack
of letters and photographs
piled so high; yellowing
on dusty shelves once painted black
now peeling and dimple-dinted
by hammers and glancing blows
like my heart has taken
what my soul already knows
that we can never get back those times
of sweet halcyon days
when endless rhymes
fell from my lips into your ears
you held me so tight and quelled my fears
but like back then and so like now
the memory of you still dries my tears
and I feel your presence throughout the years
but there's no real use in looking back
except as a reminder that once all was well
those days of laughter in Dingly Dell
the smudges of mud from our runs in the hills
collapsing and breathless and laughing like stills
from an old movie we watched on cold Winter nights
over and over until we could recite
each and every phrase word perfect to our delight
smiling eyes joined our souls and set passions alight
now all I have left are those memories
they keep me warm; those sweet histories
but that's alright as long as I know
that the struggle for you that ran deeper than snow
is no longer a struggle; no longer a blow
you found new horizons; new sunsets and sunrise
the pale yellow moon lights up all your highways
you travel alone without me by your side
tucked into your breast pocket a note where I lied
telling you I was ok and not to worry about me
I loved you so much; I let you fly free
I never much wanted a caged bird you see
I would never me happy; you would never feel free
that is what true love is
the ability to know
when it's the right thing to stay
or the right thing to go
and I know it's the right thing in letting you go
because I also feel freer and I hope that you know
it will never be over; this love that I have
but I no longer feel burdened and I rarely feel sad
we can live with the peace in our minds and our souls
and the space in our heart that's reserved for us all
to let new love in; like the cherry tree flowers
that fill up my senses and transform my hours
to days and then weeks; to months and then years
until finally I get it; there is no reason to fear
we all must let go before we get back
the love that we give; the freedom we lack
I hope you are thinking as I'm thinking of you
the love we created will serve someone new.

The name Goðafoss can be translated, from Icelandic, into "Waterfall of the Gods".
The name of this waterfall derives from a legend according to which, in the year 999 or 1000, the Lögsögumaður (the one who in the government assembly recited, with the help of poetry, all the rules, laws and customs) Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland.
After this conversion it is said that, returning from the Alþingi (Icelandic National Parliament), Þorgeirr threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall.

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas! May everyone's lives be filled with joy and happiness as pure as these kids' laughter.
Kids from Rajouri, Kashmir, India
We met these Gujjar kids on our way to the Thajiwas Glacier in Sonmarg. Gujjars are a nomadic tribe of shepherds who move up to the greener pastures in the hills in the summer. Come winter, they move down to the plains with their entire households and flocks. Due to this lifestyle, the kids usually miss out on conventional schooling. These kids had attended a nomadic school and as proof, they recited to us the alphabet, numbers and also some song and dance. They were happy to receive chocolates as their award.

I hope your eyes immediately spotted the "Why Worry" road sign. Such a perfect name for a road surrounded by so much beauty!
My mother used to always recite a little quote to me by Corrie Ten Boom: "Worry does not empty tomorrow of it's troubles, it empties today of it's strength."
Have a great week everyone, and no matter which road you take, I hope it's one that is full of STRENGTH!

Manikarnika Ghat is the primary cremation ghat in Varanasi. - beside the River Ganges.
In Hindu traditions, cremation is one of the rites of passage and the Ghats of Varanasi are considered one of the auspicious locations for this ritual. At the time of the cremation or "last rites", a "Puja" (prayer) is performed. Hymns and mantras are recited during cremation to mark the ritual. The Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghats are dedicated to the cremation ritual. Annually, less than 2 in 1000 people who die in India, or 25,000 to 30,000 bodies are cremated on various Varanasi Ghats; about an average of 80 per day. This practice has become controversial for the pollution it causes to the river. In 1980s, the Government of India funded a Clean Ganges initiative, to address cremation and other sources of pollution along the Ghats of Varanasi. In many cases, the cremation is done elsewhere and only the ashes are dispersed into the river near these Ghats.
Bodies must be cremated within 24hours of death. Being cremated and ashes thrown in the holy river bypasses the 7 states of reincarnation that devotees would ordinarily go through.
Bodies are prepared for cremation with scented oils and butters (no odour)

The answer of course, is plenty can happen. A couple of fishermen were soaked not far from this spot and not too long after I took this photo.
And I got one of my cameras completely wet by an "errant wave" back in 2016, which totally ruined it.
As I climb around on the wet rocks (reciting my mantra, "Mike Don't Fall Down, Don't Fall Down") I look to make sure I've got an escape route, although sometimes Mother Nature refuses to play by any but her own rules. It's her planet, anyway!
Didn't stray too far from White Point today, and I went home when the blue area in the sky closed up and more rain could be seen on the horizon.
Got some great shots. Didn't get wet. Didn't fall down. And all the cameras are fine as well. Thanks for asking. LOL.
When I stand before a marsh I always think about standing in front of the classroom in my high school senior English class and reciting lines from Sidney Lanier's famous poem. We all had to do it. I dreaded it in 1968 but if Mrs. Margaret Curl were still around today, I would thank her. Those lines are still in my memory and it made titling this photo easy.
I can see that the little island in the marsh has some interesting trees that I would love to photograph. It is so close but it might as well be a thousand miles away as the marsh grass and soft mud make it totally inaccessible.

The Noh Play - Aridōshi
The play Aridōshi is attributed to Zeami Motokiyo (1363-1443).
In the play, the poet Ki no Tsurayuki (waki) annoys the grounds keeper (shite) by riding his horse within the precincts of the Aridōshi Shrine. Tsurayuki soothes the feelings of the shrine deity by reciting a poem he has composed, after which, at the poet’s request, the god recites some Shinto prayers.

Classic plastic at the Bijou Planks...
When the slitheries and slickies
come out of the wet,
the ladies scream "Crickies!"
and run in a fret!
Up to the porch and up on a chair,
But the froggies and lizards
really don't care.
Mountains of human are not their desire,
but a plump juicy fly...
...now that lights a fire.

Happy Caturday!
For the 10/19/2024 Happy Caturday Group theme "Song, Movie or Poem"
Parliament used to meet here for two weeks each summer. No permanent buildings were ever erected, temporary turf huts being built each year. The parliament was presided over by the Lawspeaker, a position elected every three years. For several centuries, before the laws were written down, the Lawspeaker was expected to recite the laws from memory. Not a job I could ever do.....

The cure of time
taken with early stops from the November dew to the uproar when spring awakens.
It pauses in the embrace, exhausted, waving on the shores until the full moon of August sinks into the sea.
Then the decayed arrives, and the earth once trodden by bare feet is renewed...and even the most melancholic recites a poem to the love that departed on the last summer night.
How many will remain to come, walking with different skins and forgotten footprints from childhood.
Will this cure have a sweetness on still-juicy lips or will it bring forth some furrow, shy and salty, in that same mouth.
It is a heartbeat in the chest
a creation without absence
the train of life.

St Mary's Chapel of Ease (Dublin) - usually referred to as "The Black Church" is mentioned in James Joyce's Ulysses. Legend has it a person walking anti-clockwise with one's eyes closed, two or three times around the church at midnight, reciting the 'Hail Mary' backwards will meet the Devil. (Wikipedia)

Veterans For Peace is a group of military veterans, family members and friends who are joined in association by our pledge to serve the cause of world peace and abolish war. We bring a different message to Memorial Day than the themes usually promoted by popular media, the government and traditional veterans’ organizations.
We do not seek to glorify either warriors or war. Rather, Veterans For Peace seeks to educate the public about the folly of war and the human, economic, civil rights and liberties and environmental cost of war. VFP members march in parades, lay wreaths, give talks and speeches, recite poetry and vigil to honor U.S. service members who died in and as a result of war, as well as all the civilian victims of war.
At dawn I recite the rules of love upon
His ears, and he embraces me longingly.
At eventide I sing to him the song of
Hope, and then print smooth hisses upon
His face; I am swift and fearful, but he
Is quiet, patient, and thoughtful. His
Broad bosom soothes my restlessness.

Teach me that life is beautiful.”

I got so excited when we were last at our local landfill and I saw
RAVENS !!! so after we backed our trailer towards the pile, I quietly exited our car but they already had spotted me and a few flew off immediately, so I just started clicking, captured these three just before they flew off in a huff. It was the closest I'd ever been to ravens, so it was a thrill.

Queimada is an alcoholic beverage of Galician tradition.
Queimada is a punch made from Galician augardente (Orujo Gallego) - a spirit distilled from wine and flavoured with special herbs or coffee, plus sugar, lemon peel, coffee beans and cinnamon. It is traditionally prepared in a hollow pumpkin.
Typically, while preparing the punch a spell or incantation is recited, so that special powers are conferred to the queimada and those drinking it. Then the queimada is set alight, and slowly burns as more brandy is added.

京都 知恩院 方丈庭園
Chion-in (知恩院 Chion-in) in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Japan is the headquarters of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land Sect) founded by Hōnen (1133–1212), who proclaimed that sentient beings are reborn in Amida Buddha's Western Paradise (Pure Land) by reciting the nembutsu, Amida Buddha's name.
The vast compounds of Chion-in include the site where Hōnen settled to disseminate his teachings and the site where he died.
The original temple was built in 1234 by Hōnen's disciple, Genchi (1183–1238) in memory of his master and was named Chion-in. While the temple was affiliated more closely in the early years with the Seizan branch of Jodo Shu, its 8th head priest, Nyoichi (1262–1321) was deeply influenced by the priest Ryōkū, a disciple of Ryōchū who was the 3rd head of the Chinzei branch of Jōdo-shū Buddhism, and disciple of Bencho. Later Nyoichi's successor Shunjō (1255–1355) advanced this further by citing a biography where Genchi's disciple Renjaku-bo and Ryōchū agree that there existed no doctrinal differences between them.
Then Renjaku-bo said, "There is complete agreement between what Genchi and Bencho say in their basic teaching. So my disciples should from now on look at the Chinzei teaching as their own. There is no need to set up another school."
By 1450, Chion-in had become fully under control of the Chinzei branch, but had little direct control, due to the outbreak of the Onin War.[1] Numerous buildings in the complex were burnt down in 1633, but were entirely rebuilt by the third Tokugawa Shogun Iemitsu (1604–51) with the palatial structures that stand today.
