Vegetable gardening is one of my things. Didn't even realize it until it happened. Wasn't something I really yearned for. It just sort of happened. Over the years I've learned through trial and error what works in my yard, soil and climate, and what doesn't. Some seasons the harvest was mostly disappointment as crops either didn't develop or were devoured by wildlife or consumed by blight. The past few years I've come into a stride and produced some fairly impressive harvests. Back in late spring, I noticed my neighbor starting a garden in her front yard. I wandered over to offer assistance. Turned out it was her very first garden. I brought my tiller and turned over the dirt she had dug out of a section of lawn grass. The soil was strewn with rocks and debris, and didn't look like it could support any plant life at all. We cleared out the rock and enhanced the soil with some compost. I told her it takes time to develop good garden soil and not to expect much in the first year or two. A week later I noticed she had planted the garden, and for the first month or so it seemed my worst fears were coming true. Poor girl I thought; she's not going to get anything. But as we got into July the little garden began to flourish. The tomato plants shot up. Squash vines sprawled beyond the confines of the garden and were soon crawling their way up the porch railings. Even the potted plants looked lush. And all of this with virtually no maintenance. I would visit occasionally and couldn't believe the yield. Abundant tomatoes and more squash than ever came out of my garden. So funny to see them growing all the way up on the porch deck. Beginners luck? Dunno. Witchcraft? Probably. Just very glad it worked out for her. I visited the other day and asked her to pose in front of her plants. We shot this portrait under a blazing bright sun that blew out all of the highlights. The shot was as unusable as her garden soil, yet just like the garden, somehow it worked. I was taken with the oasis of tranquility that existed in her face, shielded from the harsh light by the brim of her hat.

Realized one day in late autumn that it was a long time since I took out my filters and tripod for some water long exposure, so I did that.
I just realized that this is the first square self-portrait I've uploaded since day 365.
I couldn't chose between 3 edits of this so- Black and White on Facebook and bluish BW on Tumblr.
As Sarah was giving me a ride back home after shooting the last photo in my stream we were talking about wanting to shoot in Bannack, a ghost town a few hours away from us, and we were talking about how (relatively) close Whitney Justesen was to us. When i got home I got a message from Whitney telling me that she was going to be in Bannack the next day shooting. Such a perfect coincidence! I texted Sarah and within an hour we had planned a mini-roadtrip!
Bannack was such a cool place, so many abandoned buildings that were completely open to be explored, such as this hotel and a school house. Definitely need to go back soon.
Realized I didn't have a photo focused on this on my stream, so here it is.
I've had this little guy for quite a while now. It's by far one of my favorite tanks of the war.
Enjoy!

I just realized that my Steam Sunday post from earlier in the week never uploaded so here it is belatedly...just a wider take on this scene from New England's own little steam Mecca.
For five weeks before Christmas the Valley Railroad (dba Essex Steam Train and Riverboat) runs an astonishing amount of holiday trains branded as the North Pole Express. Most are steam powered and this requires all three of their steam locomotives to be under steam at once. Excepting the Strasburg Railroad I don't believe there is anywhere else in the United States where it is even possible for three standard gauge locomotives to be under steam at once. But here, every weekend, it is a regular occurrence as the railroad runs 13 sold out departures between 2 and 8 PM every Sat and Sun (only 9 on Tue-Fri) using four consists one of which is led by one of the road's center cab GEs.
Through some fortunate twist of fate I only live a bit over an hour away from this magical place so every year I make a trip or two down just to soak it all up.
The 2:30 PM departure to the North Pole has just departed the Essex depot and is crossing Main St. / Route 154 near MP 4.1 on the old New Haven Valley Line. In charge and putting on a nice show is Valley Railroad #3025, a China Railways SY class 2-8-2 that was built in 1989 by the Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works for Pennsylvania's Knox & Kane Railroad where it spent its life until that railroad's demise following the collapse of that lines signature attraction, the Kinzua Viaduct. It was purchased by the VRR in 2008 and was rebuilt as a functional replica of a New Haven J-1 'Mikado' locomotive like the type that once plied this line in local service and re-numbered 3025, one number above the last of the original class on the NYNH&H.

i realized that if you're shooting from a steep corner on top an unfinished building, you dont have much time to worry much about your horizon lines....
Despite the lack of a safety shoes and a helmet, we were given 5 minutes by the person in charge of the construction and took the lift to the 27th floor. i wasn't even contented that i took the stairs to the 29th. i was shaking when i tried to look down from where i was standing... this is the thrill of being on top -- the risks, the difficulties and the efforts just to get a shot... but it is worth it... even if i have a lot of pictures with unacceptable horizon lines, i will take more attention to it next time...
“Oct 5, 2020 at 8:59:59am, I Was Enchanted” A 20 year dream realized. On Oct 5th I was packed up a ready to go with two of my hiking buddies to head out for a 9 day high mountain fall color trip to chase the golden large before the snows came. We were all packed up for car camping, so we could climb a trail for sunset, night hike out, and sleep in the cars, then move to another location and repeat. But we had a dream to score a walk up permit to go to the Amazing Enchantments. I have been lucky enough to score a permit to backpack the Enchantments 6 different times in my 20 year career as a professional photographer, but I have never been able to capture a shot of Prusik Peak and Gnome Tarn with the Golden Larches. I even made it up one other time during Golden Larch Time, but there was already two feet of snow on the ground and Gnome tarn was buried, so no shot. So at 5am on October 5th, the three of us all manned our computers hoping to see the lottery permits for the week pop up, as they release them randomly between 5am -9am. We had all given up, we hat not even seen a core permit pop up. I got it in my head that they might release some at the very last second. I refreshed the screen, put in the pertinent information, and hovered over the last number, and entered it at 8:59:59, and 16 permits popped up, and I snagged one for us! They were gone in less than 5 seconds. Oh My God! We are going to the Enchantments! I texted my two buddies, they could not believe it! So change of plans, now we all had to pack up our backpacks and head to Icicle Creek to prep for the hike the next day. And would a first day hike it was. I carried a 62 Pound Pack, 14 miles, something like 6000 feet of elevation gain, to arrive at this spot just in time for Alpenglow. And finally I realized a 20 year dream to capture this shot and Put it In the Bank!!! Shout out to the two guys that joined me on this adventure, Bryan Moore and Randy Gemar. What an adventure it was to see the Enchantments again, the larch were unbailable! Thank you so much for looking, much more to come

Realizing that Monday September 29th is National Coffee Day, Wonder Woman takes a moment to celebrate! Whether it's the aroma, the energizing boost, or just the ritual of drinking coffee, many of us can't start the day without it!
Even though she makes good money at the IADC, Diana prefers to brew her own coffee at home.
As the photographer tried to get out of bed that morning, he began to realize that his dream had not been a dream. His wildest wish as a photographer had been granted. By the metamorphic magic of Franz Kafka, he was now really that fly on the wall.
However, after the thrill passed, he could only THINK the words "danger, danger," as he was now incapable of making his mouth utter anything remotely comprehensible.
"My name is Brad," he tried to say. But out came only, "zzzz zzz."
He did not even have hands anymore to operate the controls of his beloved camera. And he was just as big as his old self so the chances of him being undetected in a room–the whole point of being a photographing fly– was nil. His new compound eyes made him unsure of what he was even seeing.
"I am in big trouble," he thought to himself. "What will my family think?"

ARTIST: ? (I assume a Savannah College of Art & Design student)
ARTWORK TITLE: Book Bee? (SCAD mascot is Artie the Bee)
DESCRIPTION: A person-sized bee (not a macro image) hangs from the ceiling
VENUE: Ceiling of Jen Library entrance, downtown Savannah, Georgia
Description for this whole series: I already posted most of these, but at that time I was processing them on my iPad using Photoshop Touch, and I hadn't realized that that resulted in lower resolution than the originals. So, here, I have re-processed them in Aperture and am re-uploading them at full resolution. These were taken on a beautiful sunny fall day in Chicago, on Northerly Island, with a view of the skyline between the bright red trees. The differences in sky color between some of them are the result of me playing around with a polarizing lens - some photos with it, some without (and possibly, hard to remember, a couple with it turned the wrong way).
I used to enjoy my summer a lot, but nothing could make me happier than the fact that fall is coming slowly, and winter as well. Well I realize that the kind of fall I'd love to live, and the ones that we actually have here in Normandy are quite different but I still hope that once, I'll find that place where I could enjoy a REAL season without being disturbed by the pouring rain and the grey clouds all the time for example (I'm writing right now and it's raining outside haha - again)
Anyway, fresh air, coldness, sunbeams, orange colors, golden feelings, red trees and a billion leaves, cold sunsets and hot drinks, I hope I'll be able to take some cool pictures about all of that from now :)
And again as always, thanks for your support x
Realized I had not taken proper advantage of the Michigan fall color so I grabbed some of the last leaves of the season and started floating them on the pond. Especially liked that this leave was likely once on the tree in this reflection. 305

I just realized that it's five years ago today since I moved to Eigerøy island.
I didn't realize then how close I would live to all the birds that I loved from my home island (3.5 hours away by car).

I realized I mostly shared some animal pictures from my recent trip to Costa Rica. However, the landscapes were also breathtaking. This pictures was shot in a remote beach next to our hotel in the peninsula of Osa, close to the northern border of the Corcovado National Park. A bench was inviting people to enjoy the sight of the sea, the surrounding and the sunset.

Just realized how much this looks like the one I captured one year ago. Haha. Oh well. Perhaps I'll make it a yearly thing. :)
Standing in the mud, water dripping from the crumbling roof and down the sagging siding of this once-beloved farmhouse, I realize this might be the last time I take my traditional New Year’s photo here. In the past, I’ve taken shots of the mantle above the fireplace in the upstairs bedroom, but going upstairs is no longer an option. The entire back of the house is basically having a midlife crisis and collapsing in on itself. One of the barns has already toppled like a house of cards in a windstorm. The other barn—where I took one of my favorite photos, the one with the Christmas tree in the doorway—still stands, but someone seems to think it’s an all-you-can-steal buffet. I patched it up once, replacing the stolen siding, but now I’m pretty sure it’s a lost cause. Nature will reclaim it eventually, and whatever’s left will be “reclaimed” by people who think they’re doing the barn a favor by stripping it down to its frame. Spoiler alert: The frame will soon crumble and fall too.
So, no, it’s not exactly the most cheerful scene. Is this the Universe’s way of telling me to move on? To spend my time on something more useful—like, say, not trying to restore a barn that’s one storm away from being a pile of wood chips? Maybe it’s time to focus on new places and new projects that aren’t quite so… doomed.
Every New Year’s I get the same existential question: Is this the year I finally get organized? The answer, as it has been for the last 30 years, is probably not. But hey, one can dream, right? Is this the year I stop hoarding supplies I’m “definitely going to use one day” and embrace minimalism ? (though, full disclosure, have you seen the inside of my car lately? Not likely to happen!) Maybe it’ll be the year I give up junk food and adopt a healthier lifestyle—though I’m pretty sure any “adoption” this year will only involve more homeless cats, adding to the already existing chaos.
So here we are, staring down a shiny new year, filled with fresh hopes and even fresher intentions. Maybe—just maybe—this is the year I’ll make actual progress toward that elusive “better future” I keep promising myself. Because, honestly, I’m running out of new years to make it happen—
And with this, as always.... my wish for you... it’s exactly the same each and every year...
“And you asked me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we’ll find better days
‘Cause I don’t need boxes wrapped in strings
And designer love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we’ll find better days “

I just realized I never uploaded any pictures from my trip to NYC! For those of you who don't know this photo was taken in a place called "Dumbo". When I went to summer camp in NYC I was down the street from here and went almost daily. It brought back so many memories. It's so nice there, hopefully one day I'll be able to watch the sunset there again every night.
I realized while continuing this project that I definitely enjoy doing schoolwork when it feels like personal work more than anything else. I started this project as a personal thing but showed it in class, which led my teacher to tell me to continue. I took another three photos for this series yesterday but this is the only one I really like. So you may or may not see the rest.
However, I probably can and will post little previews of the others on my Instagram so you should definitely go follow me there. And go "like" my Facebook page as Im starting a small little giveaway soon in celebration of being near 1,000 likes!

"Life is"
- a poem by Mother Theresa
Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is life, fight for it.

I realized I was sick of my Katie Jump Rope collection sitting on the shelf collecting dust. I decided to cut into it and am using the Swoon pattern. The pattern calls for making these stars with just 2 colors, but I wanted to try a scrappy version and love how it looks in this block.
This was not the easiest block to come together. I am not a sewist that likes patterns and I realized you need to have a PERFECTLY consistent 1/4 inch to make this block perfect. But, I still love this pattern because it lets me have big pieces of my beloved fabric and not have to chop it up too much.
There's one mistake in this block (a half square triangle placed the wrong direction) but I'm leaving it in and didn't unpick it so that I won't have the pressure of this having to be THE perfect quilt. Also I see some prints I could have placed differently to mix it up better, but I'm just going to go with it and know that the whole quilt will be sufficiently scrappy to make it all mix in!
Don't look too closely or with a critical eye - also it hasn't been trimmed up! ;]
This is a huge block - if you aren't familiar with Swoon, this is a 24" x 24" block, you make 9 of these huge guys for a square quilt. Can't wait to sew more!

I realized that it's already one year today since I moved to my boyfriend on Eigerøy island, on the south-western coast of Norway.
Even though I don't know that many people here and I don't get to see my friends much, I love the stunning nature around our home, the possability to watch both beautiful sunrises and sunsets, to go on nice walks with my dog in all directions from our doorstep, and of course spending time with my cohabitant Richard ツ

They are some photographic short stories, collected walking on the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...
are photographic shots taken a few days ago, from all media it is suggested to respect social distancing, the use of masks especially in closed places, washing hands or, if this is not possible, in any case disinfecting hands; very important tips, especially for news of new infections that come constantly both from Italy and from the rest of the world where the pandemic is at the highest levels ... .. as someone has said ... about our Italian beginning of summer .... the covid-19 virus is not goes on vacation .....
that are Confused-moved-blurred-imprecise-indecisive-shots ... the Anglo-Saxon term encompasses with one word this photographic genre with the term "blur", these photos were thus taken during the shooting phase, lengthening the exposure time, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in post-production.

I realized that I never showed my first TrickyBricks weekly challenge builds here, so here's the first one from August of last year. This challenge was to build something in a monochromatic color scheme so I chose grayscale. It's a small observatory with a telescope inside! I didn't have a lot of time to build this one so I couldn't get much more done than what you see here. The seed parts here were the curved balloon sections.
I was really inspired by Richard's lighting design tips for this one. For the cooler "moonlight" I used 2 Power Functions lights hanging from above and stuck them through chrome reflector dishes. The interior is lit by AA-powered fairy string lights that I got from the dollar store. The background is mostly real; blue and green paper with a double exposure overlay for the sky. I hope you guys like it!

MSH0315 / MSH0315-14 - The Wave
Erma Felch was the first daughter of Herbert and Emma, a couple who moved west to North Dakota from Vermont and then to Illinois and Iowa.
In Vermont, Erma's Grandfather, Eli, was a corporal in the Topsham Rifle Company in the early part of the Civil War. After the move to Illinois following the war, the family lost their farm in a terrible storm.
It seems the elder Felches stayed in Illinois, but two of the sisters, Hattie and Evaline Jane, as well as Herbert into Iowa with their own families.
Erma was probably born in Illinois and moved with her parents, Herbert and Emma to North Dakota.
In 1909, they had a second daughter, Nina Violet. But a few months after Nina was born, Erma died. She was 11 years old and there's no information that I could find on why or how she died.
Her stone is odd, with a dead bird lying under the small stump of a tree. I've seen dead birds on gravestone before, and I've seen stones made to resemble stumps, but the combination is curious. I would love to know the story behind it.
This is the third "dark" image in a row that I've shared. No, most of my new work isn't this. Most of it is, well, normal. These day-for-night shots are experiments, they're passing.
It's fun to look at them and certainly fun to create, but ultimately, they're a little gimmicky. But then, film photography is a little gimmicky.
I don't think this is where I'm headed with photography, but I can't promise there won't be more. I'm sure there will be. The newness will expire and the novelty will fade, but there will still be some of these dark shots.
And that's okay. I'm not apologizing here.
I realize that some folks really like them, just as I understand some some folks really don't. Both are valid and fine by me.
I'm not really saying anything different with the dark photos. Maybe I'm saying it differently, but it's the same idea - I'm just imposing an obvious spotlight on the subject.
So I'll take a little break from this and see where my new photos lead me (or, at least, the new photos that I've gotten around to developing already).
