As I grow as a photographer I have realized that I needed to spend more time photographing in my "backyard" instead of dreaming and lusting for opportunities far away. I am lucky enough to live on the edge of the Shenandoah Valley and the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains as I am a stones throw next to West Virginia.

In years past in Autumn/Fall I would be venturing ALL over the place and putting hundreds of miles on my car on the weekends as West Virginia is home to places like Blackwater Falls State Park, Dolley Sods, Spruce Knob, and Babcock State Park to name a few. This places are beautiful, but I feel I need a break from them for a little bit because they are SO well photographed. So this year I made a decision to stay within a county of where I live and force myself down some back roads that I have not traveled in a long while and some never at all. I have found some wonderful treasures because fo this decision..and this is one of them.

I went monochromatic because #1 I love monochrome, #2 I was shooting in mid day, #3 the clouds were amazing, and #4...again, I love monochrome! HA!

Most heroes are brave only until they realize they are the prey, not the hunter. Then the fear in your heart becomes the most dangerous monster of all.

Although I realized the potential for a good composition here more than a year ago already, it was only when I drove past this spot just before sunset a couple of days ago… that the conditions were perfect for what I wanted to try to achieve.

I realized that I never posted a Snow Goose image all year, so before the warblers come up in full force, I am purging my images from last month. Here are some geese in nice late light.

Is that Massive flying??

I realized this image via an exposure of 2 seconds.

In the first part of the exposure (maybe 1 or 1.5 sec) the little car model of my son was still. In the remaining part of the exposure, I pulled the car backward by using a tiny cord, in order to capture the "motion".

I hope that you will like the result, dear friend.

Have an Happy CrAzY Tuesday Evening!!! ;-)

[Realizing, everything I love is slowly killing me

I know I know, we're taking off together

Even though we always crash and burn

Tonight you and I will fall from the sky

Drag me all the way to hell

'Cause I'm never gonna let it go

Never gonna let it go…]

I didn't realize that Arches has a timed entry program and wasn't able to get into the park until after 1:00 P. M. Because of my mistake, I didn't have a lot of time to visit at each of the main arches. So, I only went part way up to this feature that actually has two arches. The hike on the trail isn't that difficult and was well maintained.

They have the timed entry system because of the limited parking at each of the arches. People were driving around this parking area more than one time to find a place to park. That being said, once you get out of your car and get to explore, the place is pretty magical. Everyone has a smile on their face and is in a great mood. There are so many different opportunities to frame different perspectives of each arch. This was my first arch and I couldn't wait to see what the rest had in store for me.

i realize now that this was subconsciously inspired by lexi (sea legs snapshots)

I realize this one doesn't have much to do with Japan Day, but heck, I took it during the festival so into this series it goes. ;)

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me?

I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The woman below replied, "You are in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You are between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude."

"You must be a programmer," said the balloonist.

"I am" replied the woman,"How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help so far."

The woman below responded, "You must be a manager."

"I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," said the woman,"You don't know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow "it's my fault."

Met you by surprise

I didn't realize

That my life would change for ever

Saw you standing there

I didn't know I'd care

There was something special in the air

Dreams are my reality

The only kind of real fantasy

Illusions are a common thing

I try to live in dreams

It seems as if it's meant to be

Dreams are my reality

A different kind of reality

I dream of loving in the night

And loving seems all right

Although it's only fantasy

If you do exist

Honey, don't resist

Show me your new way of loving

Tell me that it's true

Show me what to do

I feel something special about you

Dreams are my reality

The only kind of reality

Maybe my foolishness is past

And maybe now at last

I'll see how the real thing can be

Dreams are my reality

A wondrous world where I like to be

I dream of holding you all night

And holding you seems right

Perhaps that's my reality

Met you by surprise

I didn't realize

That my life would change for ever

Tell me that it's true

Feelings that are new

I feel something special about you

Dreams are my reality

A wondrous world where I like to be

Illusions are a common thing

I try to live in dreams

Although it's only fantasy

Dreams are my reality

I like to dream of you

Close to me

I dream of loving in the night

And loving you seems right

Perhaps that's my reality

I realized yesterday that my trip to Antarctica is only 7 weeks away! So I've been researching what clothing I'll need, how to carry 2 cameras, how to protect the cameras, etc. I was going to buy an expensive 2-camera harness, but decided I can manage the cameras with the Joby straps that I already use.

“Sometimes I long for a convent cell, with the sublime wisdom of centuries set out on bookshelves all along the wall and a view across the cornfields--there must be cornfields and they must wave in the breeze--and there I would immerse myself in the wisdom of the ages and in myself. Then I might perhaps find peace and clarity. But that would be no great feat. It is right here, in this very place, in the here and the now, that I must find them. ”

-Etty Hillesum, An Interrupted Life

Remember that dastardly duo I shared with you guys on Monday? Well, an hour and eight minutes later, I was returning up the path and happened to spot this fly - and then realized the scene before me.

What!!

Were they sharing?!

I don't know the story here. Did one of them snag the fly, but the other, on the other side of the fly, only see the fly and go for it, too, not realizing it had already fallen prey?

If they know the other is there, do they care?

If the spider injected venom into the fly, is the ambush bug in trouble?

Such a mystery!

While few people realize it, the ARR does own trackage outside the Last Frontier. Not much though!

The ARR owns the barge slip on Harbor Island in Seattle that they use as their interchange point to the UP and BNSF and the greater North American rail network. The ownership is actually 50/50 with Seaspan Corp (a Washington Group company) although Seaspan has never used the slip. Over time ARR’s ownership stake gradually rises since they presently pay for all maintenance and upkeep on the structure. ARR’s trackage ends adjacent the nose of the unit (hence the ARR logo on the sign) meaning the railroad owns about one car length on solid ground.

UP Seattle based yard crew YSE51R is seen here beginning the process of stripping the weekly barge that has arrived from the 49th State. Three barges owned and operated by Alaska Railbelt Marine (a member of the Lynden family of companies) are constantly cycling between Seattle and Whittier, AK carrying railcars on 8 tracks and containers stacked three high in the racks above. They are truly marvels of modern logistics!

Since the ARR owns no yard trackage in Seattle and has no locomotives of its own with which to switch the barge, the UP provides this service since it is the railroad that owns the connecting rails on Harbor Island. At the time this yard assignment was normally just a two man RCL crew, but on barge days an engineer was called and the barge is worked by a conventional three man crew.

In this view the UP crew has reached in with their handle (in order to keep the locomotive off the slip itself) consisting of a covered hopper and three old cabooses to begin pulling cars off the southbound ARMS voyage 1023 (the 23rd sailing of 2010). This particular barge is the Fairbanks Provider built by Gunderson in 2001 it is 420 ft long and 100 ft wide with 3190 linear feet of track on the deck and a dead weight of 15,300 tons.

Now that summer is over, I want to take some time to reflect upon my journey this year as a bird photographer. Last year a rare visit from the indigo bunting to my feeders was a cause of excitement. But this year, I have been reading about their general behavior. I realized that the country roads around my home are ideal summer habitats for these birds. And once we started to look for them, we realized there were hundreds of them around. I’d even state that this summer was the summer of indigo buntings for us as they were the most photographed birds this year, just like last summer was the summer of scissor-tailed flycatchers.

You have to look at this landscape at least 5 minutes to realize you are in real life.

Have you all realized about your second life addiction?

Until this day, the 15th year of my second life, that one click had a lot of struggle. Mainly on the time and money i've invested in this game. It was a relief, and I was able to do it because my brother assured me that secondlife isn't the only thing in the world. Thank you for those I have met, and I have decided to move forward to focus on my real life and my health since I needed the time and focus. There weren't any regrets, there was the occasional habit of looking for the firestorm button! but then I smiled then looked away, I knew that it was time to let go.

Happy Truck Thursday

"The shadow, when it is realized, is the source of renewal; the new and productive impulse cannot come from established values of the ego. When there is an impasse, and sterile time in our lives—despite an adequate ego development—we must look to the dark, hitherto unacceptable side which has been at our conscious disposal….This brings us to the fundamental fact that the shadow is the door to our individuality. In so far as the shadow renders us our first view of the unconscious part of our personality, it represents the first stage toward meeting the Self. There is, in fact, no access to the unconscious and to our own reality but through the shadow. Only when we realize that part of ourselves which we have not hitherto seen or preferred not to see can we proceed to question and find the sources from which it feeds and the basis on which it rests. Hence no progress or growth is possible until the shadow is adequately confronted and confronting means more than merely knowing about it. It is not until we have truly been shocked into seeing ourselves as we really are, instead of as we wish or hopefully assume we are, that we can take the first step toward individual reality.

There are at least five effective pathways for traveling inward to gain insight into the composition of our shadow: (1) soliciting feedback from others as to how they perceive us; (2) uncovering the content of our projections; (3) examining our “slips” of tongue and behavior, and investigating what is really occurring when we are perceived other than we intended to be perceived; (4) considering our humor and our identifications; and (5) studying our dreams, daydreams, and fantasies."

------ Connie Zweig from "Meeting the Shadow" -----

I didn't realize Alien 5 was a thing (or for that matter another Predator movie, but that's not until 2018 apparently) until Grantmasters started promoting it, so I decided to revisit the genera as my latest temporary obsession.

As such, this is just a small quick build to go with my Alien figure I built a while back. I was working to get a minifigure scaled Facehugger, and I think I largely succeeded--its a bit big, but it works. Incidentally, if anyone wants to build one, it's just six hands (it works with 4 actually, too), a Gollum arm, a jumper plate, and a 1x1 tooth plate (pointed towards the tail--which you cannot see at this angle).

I'd like to make tons of these, but like my Alien (black gun legs) I ended up using "rare" pieces, which makes it expensive to army build--didn't realize tan hands were hard to come by. Someone else get on that!

I realized a week or so ago that I only had 44 pics in the Mount Saint Helen folder and thought that odd as I've been there many times so I've been rooting around in my archive and realized that I once again had grabbed the wrong shot, this is nearly identical to 'Windy Ridge' but there is less fog and one can see the terrain much better so.....

Last May somewhere in lovely Rochester, UK. When I pushed the curtain aside that morning, I didn't realize that it was probably the last time I saw the warm sunbeams fall on a European England.
