We drove out to Black Earth looking for freight cars parked along the former Milwaukee Road line to Prairie du Chien. There weren't any freight cars, but there was a pile of rails.

Riding the rails in the rain, en route to a little rural town named Orccha which means “the hidden.”

These double-track rails were unoccupied (and not sure they get too much business), but this 19th century transportation system is still around. The lore of the locomotive and train continues to fascinate....especially, when one considers the emphasis on speed in more contemporary modes.
