One of the things I love about wildlife photography is the unpredictability of it. I often go out with a subject in mind and end up photographing something completely unexpected.
After parking the car and getting my kit out ready to walk down to the river to check on the kingfishers, I happened to glance over the wall right next to the road and saw 5 young rabbits munching on grass a few feet in front of me.
Well, the kingfishers were put on hold and I spent the next hour or so with the rabbits, getting strange looks from passers by, but getting some great close ups of this family of rabbits.
This is one of the parents (presumably) that turned up within a few minutes of my arrival to keep an eye on the youngsters.
Taken with a Canon T3i DSLR and Sigma AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG with the following settings: f/5.6, 1/50 s, and ISO 400.

Couldn't resist the tile; majors apologies to to the late John Updike. This could very well be a story of a creature in the throes of suburban angst, however. This Audubon's Cottontail is living along the banks of the largely cemented San Gabriel River, in the Los Angeles Basin. With homes on one side and a freeway on the other, this cannot be the world's most well adjusted rabbit.
According to my 3 kids, it brings luck for a month, if the first words spoken, on the first of any month are "Rabbit, rabbit". Worth a try, eh?
