The statue of the Goddess Roma was the 'heart' of the 'Altare della Patria' (Altar of the Fatherland) at the Vittoriano when it was first built.
Angelo Zanelli is said to have made the goddess less 'war-like' and 'softened' her look with some attributes from Athena. She is still helmeted, carries a spear, and on her left hand holds a Winged Victory.
A Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was later added directly below her statue and has become more of the focus of visitors attention.
