Roma girl in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. She about ten or eleven years old. She is standing with her back against a tree trunk. Roma (gypsy) people in Central Asia are a subgroup of the Dom people, who likely emigrated from Multan, Pakistan many centuries ago. In Tajikistan they are known as Jughis, or sometimes Lyulis or Lulis. However they prefer the term Mugat (also spelled Mughat). For many Tajiks, Roma are probably the most disliked of all social groups. They face police harassment and are often discriminated against by ordinary citizens. Although they constitute a tiny percentage of Tajikistan’s population, probably numbering from several thousand to perhaps a few tens of thousands, they are highly visible because of their distinctive clothes and their begging. Photo taken on June 23, 2011.

Roma Termini is the main railway station of Rome, Italy. It is named after the district of the same name, which in turn took its name from ancient Baths of Diocletian, which lie across the street from the main entrance.
