Aerial view of a well developed rip current on Baragoot Beach in southern NSW Australia. Longshore feeder currents from either side converge to flow more strongly seaward in a deeper, well defined rip channel. This in turn causes localised retreat of the sandy shoreline. The rip dissipates in deeper water just seaward of the breakpoint. Dangerous swimming, good fishing and a quick trip out the back for surfers.

Prof Stephen Hawking, CH CBE FRS FRSA (8 January 1942 – 14 March 2018). Rest in peace, and kudos on beating the odds and having an amazing life!

Science is not only a disciple of reason but, also, one of romance and passion - Stephen Hawking

Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. - Stephen Hawking

However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. - Stephen Hawking

I believe alien life is quite common in the universe, although intelligent life is less so. Some say it has yet to appear on planet Earth. - Stephen Hawking

I had volunteer goat feeding duties this morning at Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester, Massachusetts. I gave them some pumpkins as an appetizer before their hay. This Boer goat is called Rip, named after the tear in her ear.

Yes, the man who said the iconic Star Wars line "It's A Trap!" in Return of the jedi has sadly passed away at the age of 93...Erik Bauersfeld not only voiced Admiral Ackbar in both Return of The Jedi and The Force Awakens, but also voiced Bib Fortuna. His work will always be remembered! Rest In Peace.

Update (Jan 7, 2018): Clarke Renard passed away peacefully with family next to him. He was with out a doubt one of the nicest human beings I have ever met.

My friend Clarke Renard, who it is in end stage Pancreatic cancer. This photo was taken in early September of 2016 at Willrette Rd in rural Dekalb County, IL Clarke is one of the folks I met on Flickr in 2009/10 who got me into rail photography. One of my best summers was in 2013 when I worked with him in Lawn care. This photo was during the last time I went railfanning with him. The following text in bold is from Jason Leverton (JAYLEV on Flickr) who captioned one of his facebook photos with the following text. His words pretty much sum up Clarke's incredible will to survive, which many of us probably would have given up on, facing such long odds. Please say a prayer for the TRAINUT

This is the guy who continues to defy the odds in his fight against cancer. When doctors said he probably wouldn't make it through August, he promptly told them he would make it to the end of the year because he likes Halloween and he likes Christmas. It's now the first of the year and Clarke has reached his goal. And he has faith that God will continue to extend his life. Clarke is thankful for every day and then quietly prays for one more. Yes, his days are numbered. But so are everyone's. No one wants to think about it, but your day might even come before his. This is why all of us should be thankful for every day. Each day is a gift. Do something with it. Really. Do. Something.

We could learn a lot from dogs.

Not the kind of things that make up a curriculum-

nothing that could be graded, or pass an exam,

but useful things.

How to be happy for no reason,

how to love without diffidence.

How to grab life and squeeze out all the best bits,

of whatever scrap you’ve been flung.

Wisdom - Jade Wright Dec 2020

Kassanndra adopted Marnie (named for several horror characters), and Penny (named for Pennywise the Dancing Clown, the cool Tim Curry version), both older dogs, from a Chihuahua rescue.

Unlike the growling, nipping stereotype of this breed, Kassanndra's dogs have been sweet and loving, never yappy or aggressive, always, to everyone.

Kassanndra made me promise, more than once, that if anything happened to her, I would take good care of her dogs.

Marnie used to march around the yard like a big patrol dog making security rounds, but she was moving a little slowly for a couple of days. Still, she was eating, drinking, and irking Penny so I chalked it up to old age finally catching up with her.

She passed away sometime during the night, after she and Penny went to bed.

I'm sure Kassanndra is looking after her again, and has introduced her to her first Chihuahua, Ruby (also a rescue).

R.I.P. Marnie. You're a good girl.

I visited this beautiful city three weeks ago. Today I am overwhelmed by what has just happened. RIP to victims

Now its time for you to spring into the abyss. Give Madilyn an unsolicited kiss if you see her. Your pain is released and you're free.

After a two year battle with cancer Herman decided on Sunday morning that it was time to move on.

Although obnoxious with his disregard for social norms regarding peeing in the house, inappropriately long kisses, and sniffing the foster dogs' private business, he stayed my loyal co-pilot for the last 15 years --- welcoming hundreds of foster dogs and children through our home.

For a decade I couldn't walk anywhere around the home or yard without Herman shadowing. He spent hundreds of hours patiently resting at my feet while I edited photos.

I love you.

The Ripper Loves The Wool...

Having suffered seizures during her final four months, my beloved Reisa finally lost her battle to live on May 16th. She was the sweetest and most devoted pet I've had the privilege to own. She will always be cherished and forever be missed. May she rest in peace ...

"Ripper" a composite of a couple of my images and a couple of other elements.

This one started it's life as a simple composite for an example in some course material I'm putting together.

My daughter adopted Korman from a shelter 9 years ago. He was truly a gentle giant, loved by family and all who met him. He was Tracey's protector and companion while her husband John served tours of duty with the Marine Corps in Iraq and Afghanistan. Korman died peacefully today. He was 14.

Rest in peace Robert Himler. I didn't watch his vids much, but he seemed to be very involved with the car community.

This officially kicks off a new feature, my RIP album. It will be comprised of my photographic subjects that no longer exist. I never like seeing former subjects disappear but am always glad that I have a record of them.

This neon is one of my earliest posts to the Mick L FLICKR photostream and one of the few times that I knew in advance that the building would be demolished. This version of the P-Club ended forever although a much lesser club resurrected the name later at another location.

I took many outside shots over a few days, and the owner of the club kindly allowed me to photograph interior signs on closing night. I was also a long-time patron of the P-Club, which had some good entertainment at times and always offered excellent free popcorn. It was a major entertainment venue in its halcyon days and many hockey and football stars sometimes visited.

I put 10 photos of other some of the other P-Club pics plus other RIP subjects in the album (see below) and will add more with new posts through time.

I was saddened When I heard the news of Jane Goodall passing.

What a strong, intelligent, beautiful and brave woman she was.

I hadn't been to AWT in months. A very sad revelation for me about Rhi.

I stopped in to see if the look had changed again, since I last visited.

I used to visit the dance floor all the time, a very long time ago. An illness robbed me of my exact memories there. But I do remember the good feelings AWT brought me.

Very sad news...
