Three armed, masked men entered the stores where he was working (Texas USA), one of the men shot him in the chest. The other two thieves took money from the register and from behind the counter before all three ran from the convenience store.
My gran in Austria passed away last Wednesday 20 April 2011, she was 98 and would have turned 99 on 4 July this year.
She was healthy right up until the end, having perfect vision and hearing. She underwent surgery a few weeks ago to have her gallbladder removed, and was recovering well from that. However, before being released from hospital negligent doctors gave her a blood transfusion which she didn't need and accidentally gave her blood of the wrong blood type. Despite realising their mistake and treating her, there was not too much that they could do. Shortly after returning home she had a dizzy spell and suffered a nasty fall and badly hurt her head which resulted in her needing stitches. The combination of these accidents marked a turning point in her health and well-being.
Born in 1912, the same decade that the Wright brothers successfully took to the skies, she missed the sinking of the RMS Titanic by a few months but lived through both World War I and II. You can only begin to imagine how much change these eyes have seen in the world in just under a century.
I took this photo of her during my trip to Europe in September 2008, which marked the second and last time I ever saw her in person.
Rest in peace, Oma.

My name is Elizabeth Madison. I am a sophomore and I’m taking digital photography. I love photography and I have no idea why its just fun to capture moments in a frame I guess. This was our final project in digital photography; we took a scene from the book we read and captured it in a picture. I read Dreamland it is a story about a girl named Caitlin who just turned sixteen and her sister runs away. She has always lived in her sister’s shadow now she’s trying to do things her sister wouldn’t. She joins the cheer squad; on her way to a party she meets Rogerson, a boy who’s unlike anyone else she knows. She leaves her world of cheer and normality, which she is used to, and begins a journey she won’t ever forget. With her now abusive boyfriend and the usage of drugs she starts to loose herself. She takes a photography class with her mother and neighbor, during the class there is a self portrait assignment. Caitlin takes a picture in the mirror. After her parents finding out about the abuse and the drugs Caitlin is sent to a rehab center where she rips the self portrait. As she progresses she starts to tae the picture back together kind of taping her life back together, this is what I portrayed the ripped picture put back together.
I tried to do a lot of different things for this project but nothing really worked, until I thought of this. To take a picture of myself in the mirror, print it, rip it up, and tape it back together. I think it shows that everyone is torn about something but you can always put yourself back together. I wanted to do something simple, just one simple picture so when I ripped it, it would be simple but not really. I tried to look lost and confused, because at the time of the picture (in the book) Caitlin was. In the book while dating Rogerson, Caitlin had to wear long sleeves and pants because of the bruises he left on her skin from the many hits. In this picture I’m wearing a sweatshirt and pants, not much of my skin is showing. I tried making it as much like in the book as I could. This was an amazing book and I hope I did it justice with this picture.
