Yoga is a great means for many people to sweat, stay fit and get a good workout. But the most important thing that people tend to forget is that their body needs some light and relaxing style of yoga flow time and again to restore and unwind themselves.
Restorative work on windows and doors involves removal of failed modern latex paints and glazing compounds, and reinstallation of linseed based glazing putty and solvent free linseed based paints. The historic linseed based materials will long outlast the modern finishes, which for a building like Kolb Studio (hard to access for repairs) is a good investment and more sustainable approach. GCA Photo by Terri Attridge.
Kolb Studio clings to the edge of Grand Canyon. It was the home and photographic studio of Grand Canyon pioneers, Emery and Ellsworth Kolb, and was begun in 1904. Today, this historic studio is open year-round. It contains an exhibit hall, bookstore, and information center operated by the Grand Canyon Association.
During 2013 and 2014, with help from donors, GCA is in the process of rehabilitating this valuable piece of Grand Canyon History in order to keep it available for generations to come.
Work includeds: Addressing structural degradation of Kolb Studio by:
a) rectifying drainage problems from public sidewalks and corresponding retaining walls,
b) stabilizing the concrete entranceway to assure safe continuing access to the facility
c) repairing and replacing exterior building features (e.g. log and shingle siding, structural beams, gutters, wooden porches) in order to assure long-term structural integrity of the building and
d) protecting restored exterior surfaces with paints, sealants and other coatings.

Restorative justice can take a form of a restorative circle meeting. Every person sitting in the circle has time to speak and to get what they need from the meeting, while feeling supported by those who are there for them. Circles are also often used when there is more than one person harmed or more than one person responsible – or for more community involvement or supporters to take part. In this type of circle, people who have experienced the same harm can come together, using the talking piece in turn to have their voice heard. Support is provided by specially trained facilitators.
Background:
Restorative justice is a voluntary process of supported contact between a person who has caused harm and someone who has experienced harm. Where appropriate, this can also include their families and supporters.
Restorative justice does not always occur between a person who has experienced harm and/or a person who has caused that harm. It can also be used to address secondary harm caused by organisations or systems, conflict experienced across a community group and/or circles of those who have experienced similar types of harm. This is often referred to as ‘restorative practice’ or a ‘restorative approach’.
Restorative justice takes many forms, based on what is best for the parties involved, their needs and their continued safety. This is explored through the planning, preparation stages and continued risk assessment. Approaches include face-to-face conferences or meetings, letter-writing, video conferencing, ‘shuttle dialogue’ and healing circles.
Restorative justice has many evidence-based benefits for those who have experienced harm and also those who have caused harm, their families and communities. These can include being given a choice, empowerment, recovery, improved wellbeing and the process can also help prevent people from causing further harm.
Restorative Justice in Scotland:
It’s a voluntary and consent-based process in Scotland and any party can discontinue their engagement in the process at any point without losing support from services in place, to ensure trauma-informed practice continues.
Restorative justice can be considered by adults, children and young people in Scotland in a way which is responsive to trauma and takes a rights-based approach.
Research shows people in Scotland want the option of exploring restorative justice across a range of crime types, including those considered serious and sensitive in nature. This does not mean it will always go ahead, but even the choice is found to be empowering.
Restorative justice operates in parallel to the criminal justice and youth justice systems in Scotland and is never used an alternative to this. Outcomes achieved and/or agreed through restorative justice have no impact on any decisions taken throughout the criminal justice process.

Born into Brothels, by Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski, is the winner of the 77th annual Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. A tribute to the resiliency of childhood and the restorative power of art, Born into Brothels is a portrait of several unforgettable children who live in the red light district of Calcutta, where their mothers work as prostitutes. Zana Briski, a New York-based photographer, gives each of the children a camera and teaches them to look at the world with new eyes.
The photographs taken by the children in Born into Brothels are available for purchase in the Kids' Gallery, and as a signed limited-edition portfolio, or as a compilation in our companion book. 100% of proceeds from sales of the children's prints go directly to support their education and well-being.
www.kids-with-cameras.org/aboutus/
Kids with Cameras was founded in 2002 by photographer Zana Briski out of her work teaching photography to children in Calcutta's red-light district. We believe that photography is an effective tool in igniting children's imagination and building self-esteem. We believe in the power of art to transform lives, for both the artist and the viewer.
www.kids-with-cameras.org/calcutta/
In Calcutta, there are over 7,000 women and girls who live and work as prostitutes. In 1997, New York-based photographer Zana Briski went to Calcutta to photograph the prostitutes, penetrating through the web of brothel owners, pimps, police, local politicians and organized crime syndicates to better understand their lives.
While she was living in the brothels she developed relationships with a group more stigmatized than the women: their children. Spurred by their fascination with her camera, Zana began to teach them photography, and to see the world through their eyes.
From 2000 to 2003, she conducted weekly workshops and taught them camera basics, lighting, composition, the development of point-of-view, editing, and sequencing for narrative. The goal of the project was to provide a safe place for the kids to be themselves, learn, have fun, and in the process, come to believe in their own self-worth. She watched in wonder as the children came back with vibrant self-portraits, family pictures, and street scenes that offered stunning tableaus of Bengali life.
Zana and filmmaker Ross Kauffman documented the children and their stories in the film "Born into Brothels," which went on to win over 25 major awards, including the 2005 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Through the film, audiences all over the world learned of and fell in love with the spirited and resilient young photographers. They witnessed how art and education can empower children growing up in difficult circumstances to transform their lives.
Zana founded Kids with Cameras in 2002 to raise money and awareness for the children through print sales, exhibitions, film festivals and a book of their work. The children's images have been exhibited in Calcutta, Europe and all over the U.S. A book of their photos was published in 2004. In order to help more children from Calcutta's red-light district, we have also been raising money to develop a safe home specifically for the children of prostitutes to provide an opportunity for them to learn, thrive and lead future generations. An educational curriculum based on the film has also been created to reach out to students and teachers across the U.S. and around the world.
Kids with Cameras has since sent other committed and passionate photographers to teach photography to children growing up in areas of poverty, abuse or conflict. We have developed workshops for Palestinian and Isreali children in Jerusalem, child domestic workers in Haiti and the garbage collecting community in Cairo
Directed by Jack Winget, a joyfully restorative tale set amongst the wine, wisteria and Mediterranean sunshine. Longing to get away from the malaise of post-WWI London and the stasis of their respective marriages, housewives Lotty and Rose are enticed by an ad in the paper that reads, "Small castle on the Mediterranean, Northern Italy. To be let for April. Cook, gardens, ocean view." Impulsively, they rent the Italian villa, recruit two very different English women to share the cost and plan their escape. All four women dive into the experience of a lifetime, shed inhibitions and blossom anew - rediscovering themselves in ways they could never have imagined.

By nature of their general training dentists can carry out the majority of dental treatments such as restorative (fillings, crowns, bridges), prosthetic (dentures), endodontic (root canal) therapy, periodontal (gum) therapy, and extraction of teeth, as well as performing examinations, radiographs (x-rays), and diagnosis. Dentists can also prescribe medications such as antibiotics, sedatives, and any other drugs used in patient management.
They also encourage prevention of oral diseases through proper hygiene and regular, twice yearly, checkups for professional cleaning and evalution. Oral infections and inflammations may affect overall health and conditions in the oral cavity may be indicative of systemic diseases, such as osteoporosis, diabetes, celiac disease or cancer.
Many studies have also shown that gum disease is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and preterm birth. The concept that oral health can affect systemic health and disease is referred to as "oral-systemic health".

A uterine prolapse occurs when the pelvic floor becomes weakened and the surrounding tissues, muscles, and ligaments are unable to provide proper support to the uterus. This may lead to the uterus descending down or into the vagina. In more severe cases, the uterus may protrude out of the vaginal opening.
Although uncommon, some complications may arise if left untreated. An ulceration of exposed tissues or additional prolapses may occur: rectal or bladder.
However, there are many different treatment options available to you! In this article we address uterine prolapse and how you may find treatment without the need of surgery.
What is a Prolapse?
A prolapse or a pelvic organ prolapse, happens when 1 or more organs become displaced. They can either bulge into the vaginal canal or into the rectum. The most common forms of prolapse are uterine prolapse, bowel (rectal) prolapse, and bladder prolapse.

These conditions are not life threatening, but may cause painful or uncomfortable symptoms.
In many cases, we at RYC®, have noticed that these symptoms are often relieved and treated through corrective exercise and various lifestyle changes.
What is a Prolapsed Uterus?
Uterine prolapse is a particular kind of pelvic organ prolapse. Although it is more common during pregnancy and childbirth, a uterine prolapse can occur in women of any age and stage of life. Women who are postmenopausal or have had multiple deliveries may be at a higher risk of developing a uterine prolapse.
However, in many cases, surgical treatment is not required. A mild or minor prolapse may resolve through minor lifestyle, exercise, or diet changes. Some providers recommend surgery when prolapse causes pain or unbearable discomfort that interrupts your daily life.
Stages of Uterine Prolapse
A uterine prolapse is often categorized in two different ways: incomplete or complete.
An incomplete uterine prolapse is defined by a partial displacement of the uterus into the vagina, without protrusion.
A complete uterine prolapse is defined by a partial or full protrusion of the uterus out of the vaginal opening. A complete prolapse is then graded in severity, depending on how far the uterus has descended.
1st grade: when the cervix has descended into the upper vagina
2nd grade: the cervix has descended to the vaginal opening
3rd grade: the cervix has protruded outside of the introitus
4th grade: the uterus and cervix have both descended out of the vaginal opening
In many cases, exercise may be able to help. In severe cases there may be a need for medical treatment. If you have concerns, it is always best to consult a health professional for a diagnosis.
Symptoms of a Uterine Prolapse
There are many different symptoms that may arise depending on the severity. The most common symptoms of uterine prolapse include:
a feeling of heaviness or pulling in the pelvic floor muscles
increased vaginal discharge or bleeding
painful or difficulty having sex
urinary incontinence or urinary retention
chronic constipation, bowel movement difficulty
lumbar spine pain
bulge or protrusion from the vaginal opening
feeling or sensation of something falling from the vagina or like sitting on a ball
weak vaginal tissue
In many cases, prolapse may be asymptomatic. However, in the presence of symptoms, they often become worse or more noticeable at the end of the day.
What Causes Uterine Prolapse?
Although the cause of many forms of prolapse is not entirely known, there are some common factors that may put you at risk of developing a prolapse.
pregnancy
delivery complications
postmenopause, in conjunction with drastic hormonal changes
heavy lifting, emproper muscle engagement
straining during bowel movements
chronic coughing
past pelvic surgeries or operations
Prolapsed Uterus Treatment
If you search online, you will find a host of different sites telling you you need to do kegels or have surgery in order to properly treat a uterine prolapse. Although that may be an answer for some, it is not always the case. Kegels may encourage improper engagement of the pelvic muscles, especially if they are already hyper toned.
A minor / moderate prolapse may be resolved with:
treating and preventing chronic constipation (high fiber diet)
avoiding heavy lifting for a time
properly engaging different muscle groups when lifting is necessary
treating a chronic cough
exercise and diet changes
during menopause, considering hormonal therapy
If you have attempted to prevent your prolapse from getting worse through exercise and treating symptoms like a cough or constipation, medical treatment may be necessary.
Uterine Prolapse Surgery
In the case of a severe prolapse that does not resolve through exercise or physical therapy, your doctor may recommend prolapse repair surgery. A minimally invasive procedure (laparoscopic surgery) or a more invasive vaginal surgery might be an option.
These surgeries often involve:
Repair of weakened pelvic floor muscles and tissues: This procedure is intravaginal or intra-abdominal. The surgeon may repair the tissues via graft, donor tissue, or with synthetic material to help support your pelvic organs.
Removal of your uterus (hysterectomy). In very severe cases, a hysterectomy may be advised. Although generally considered safe, any surgical procedure holds a risk of complications.
Before considering surgery as an option, it is best to consult with your doctor and surgeon to ensure you are aware of any risks and benefits prior to your operation.
How to Heal Prolapse Without Surgery
Posture: Pelvic Alignment and Reducing Abdominal Pressure:
Our posture and how we use our bodies in our daily activities significantly impacts our overall core and pelvic floor health. Our posture can greatly affect our joints, muscles, and bone health. When it comes to working with my clients on their rectocele, I always ensure part of their treatment involves restoring and healing their pelvic floor function. An unintentional mistake many women make when standing upright is shifting their weight forward in their hips. Think of the hips leaning forward. This shift can actually increase tension in the muscles of the pelvic floor leading to varying types of POP. In the process of resolving pelvic alignment, I might work on hamstrings, upper back mobility, glute function, pelvic mobility and more. Resolving pelvic floor issues requires us to view the pelvic floor as a part of an entire system and therefore requires a whole-body approach. The process of learning how to align your body to better support you while you stand takes time, but is well worth the process. And your pelvic floor will thank you for it! Better alignment = less pelvic floor tension and pressure.
Now that you know that rectocele can be treated without the need of surgery, it may be time to learn more about how to use exercise to heal your pelvic floor. My 13 Week Program: Restore Your Core offers a step by step approach to developing a strong, healthy, responsive core & pelvic floor system, for the health of your whole body.

Pelvic Floor Exercises
Tadasana – Mountain pose
A mountain pose is a standing pose which engages your abdomen, pelvic floor, and back.
Stand with your big toes together and your heels slightly apart. Ensure that your weight is distributed evenly between your feet. Relax your arms at your side with palms and biceps facing forward. Inhale, and gently lift your ribcage to be evenly distanced from your pelvis. Place your palms gently on your sides for lower back stability, and exhale slowly. Repeat 5 – 10 times as you are able.
Pelvic bridges
A pelvic tilt is beneficial in strengthening your lower and upper back as well as your hips and legs.
To begin, lie on your back with your feet aligned with your hips and your arms resting at your sides, palms face down. Gently curl your tailbone so that your spine is settled on the floor. This will relieve any pressure you may feel in your lower back. Inhale and begin slowly exhaling as you gently lift your hips upward, tilting your pelvis as you continue tucking in your tailbone. Hold for 2 – 3 breaths and slowly lower yourself back to your starting position. Repeat 5 to 10 times as you are able.
It is important that if you feel any pain or discomfort during these exercises, that you pause and wait until you are able.

Yoga is an ancient practice that’s sought to unite a person’s body, soul, and mind for whole body health and wellness. Today, yoga has been refined and used as a routine that boasts many health benefits and restorative exercise planning for men and women around the world. Some studies have shown that yoga poses health benefits in potentially helping with anxiety, depression, stress, and helping reduce inflammation in the body. Thus, yoga can go far beyond aiding in balance and flexibility by taking part in exercise routines designed to restore function to your core, pelvic floor, legs, hips, and lumbar spine.
As someone who has experienced a severe back injury and benefitted from restorative yoga, I prioritize how I move in my programs. Instead of reducing exercise, I have developed techniques for continuing yoga and exercise that prioritizes movement safety dynamically. In this article, I will address yoga poses I use in my program that focus on:

What are The 5 Basic Types of Yoga Stances?
In the practice of yoga, there are 5 basic stances or types of yoga. In order to find the right program for you and which yoga best suits your needs, it may be helpful to give an overview of the most commonly practiced types of yoga. Below is a list of the 5 basic types of yoga.
Standing Poses: Standing poses are often a warm-up practice to help prepare your body for movement. In slow flow yoga, standing poses are often practiced in longer sequences with stages of rest in between.
Balancing Poses: Balance poses are great for beginner’s. This form of yoga can help build the necessary core strength for more advanced movements, postures, and stretches.
Seated Poses: Seated stretches are great for loosening hips and hamstrings after a workout or at the end of your yoga class. Using a pillow or folded blanket for your bottom can help make these stretches a bit more comfortable.
Supine Poses: Resting poses and positions are important to learn for break periods. These positions can continue to relieve and loosen your hips, hamstrings, and provide gentle twists and inversions.

What are 9 Yoga Poses?
My program is designed to teach men and women how to help their bodies become more responsive in their daily activities. This means training the body to engage and respond appropriately when engaging in lifting, walking, standing, and other daily light activities. Posture, breathing mechanics, and how you move your body are crucial to full body health and wellness.
Below I will address a few asanas positions and stretches that I encourage in my yoga practice.
Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
The mountain pose is a standing position. This position aids in helping engage the major muscles groups while improving focus and concentration. This pose is the starting position for all poses within the asanas yoga practice. To begin this stretch:
Stand with your heals apart with your arms resting at your sides. Gently lift your toes and the balls of your feet while spreading your toes – laying them gently back onto the floor. Distribute your body weight evenly between your feet. Begin lifting with your ankles and firmly flexing your thigh muscles while rotating them inward. Inhale through your ribcage, as you exhale, relax your shoulder blades. Elongate your neck and gently broaden your collarbones. During this position – your body you are aligned: ears, shoulders, hips, and feet should be aligned. When you first begin practicing, you may want to ensure proper alignment by standing with your back against a wall. Remember to breathe appropriately and not forcefully during these poses.
Vrikshasana (Tree Pose)
The tree pose is another asanas movement that helps improve balance and strength in your legs and lower back. To practice this pose:
Place the right foot of your left thigh – your sole should rest flat on your thigh and be placed firmly. Try to keep your left leg straight and balanced. Inhale while lifting your arms above your head toward the ceiling, bringing your palms together. Keep your spine straight and take a few deep breaths. As you slowly begin to exhale, gently bring your hands down to a relaxed position and lease your right leg. Repeat these steps with the opposite leg.
Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose)
Downward facing dog stretches the hamstrings and chest while lengthening the spine. This position can also increase blood circulation helping you feel more energized. To perform this pose:
To begin, start on all fours – knees and hands firmly placed on the ground aligned with your shoulders and hips. It may be easier as you begin learning this position, to start with a downward facing”puppy” pose. Remain on your knees, and slowly shift each elbow down to where your hands previously rested. Gradually shift your knees a few paces back, and gently lower your heart to the floor while lifting your butt – head and spine aligned. Gently move your shoulders away from your ears and stretch, breathing deeply, yet gently.
To perform the downward facing dog, begin in the same position as before. Begin by lifting each elbow of the ground slowly and then raise your knees: elbow, elbow; knee, knee. With arms outstretched, lift your buttocks up, with your head and spine aligned, lowered toward the floor. It may help to pedal your feet as you remain in this position instead of staying static. Breathe deeply. Repeat.
Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)
The triangle pose is a great pose to help with hip mobility, stretching your legs and torso, as well as encouraging deep breathing. To begin this pose:
Stand with your feet wide apart. Shift your right foot to a 90 degree position while keeping the leg closer to your torso. Firmly place your feet into the ground, keeping your weight evenly distributed between both feet. Inhale deeply. As you exhale, slowly lower your arm to the floor while lifting your left arm up. Keep your waist straight and ensure you are bending sideways and not backward or forward. Continue breathing deeply and stretch as much as you can. Repeat with your left side.
Kursiasana (Chair Pose)
This pose is one that can be a bit challenging to do. However, it is a powerful pose that helps strengthen your legs and arms. In order to perform this pose:
Stand with your feet slightly apart, about a thumbs print between your feet. Stretch your arms straight out without bending your elbows. Now, this is the part that can be more challenging. Inhale deeply and as you exhale, begin bending your knees, pushing your pelvis downward like you are sitting on a chair. During this shift in your position, it is important to keep your back and neck straight. Posture and balance are important for this. It may be helpful to begin bending your knees in a way that your body tends to do – this can bulge your belly and keep your back a bit angled. During this stage, place one palm gently on your low back above your tailbone, and the other on your belly. Gently push your tailbone downward while lifting your torso into a straight, up and down, position. Take deep breaths and bend gradually.
Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)
This stretch is great for your lower back muscles and opening your chest for deep breaths. The cobra pose can aid in cushioning the spine, triceps, and aids in spine flexibility. To begin this pose:
Lay with your belly flat on the floor, legs and arms outstretched close together. Slowly place your hands below your shoulders and keep your feet and toes flat on the floor. Push your weight in through your foundation, shifting your shoulder blades closer together, and gently lift your chest and head up while deeply inhaling. Remember to make sure you are not pinching in your shoulders or neck. Gently engage in this motion, keeping your head tilted back and your shoulders away from your ears. As you return to the ground, exhale.
Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend)
The seated forward bend improves flexibility of the hips, hamstrings, and the back while lengthening the spine. To perform this pose:
Sit up straight with your legs outstretched, close together, with your toes pointing outward. Inhale deeply, raising your hands up over your head toward the ceiling. Stretch your spine by lifting upward, keeping your foundation firmly in place. While you exhale, gently outstretch your body, bending forward from the hips toward your feet – chin moving toward your toes. Place your hands wherever they reach, and place your face down between your shins or in between your knees. Inhale deeply 3 or 4 times as you elongate your spine – keeping your navel close to your knees. Stretch your arms back out, and lift from your hips, keeping your arms outstretched. Once you are back in a seated position, slowly lower your arms back down.
Child’s Pose
The child’s pose is a restful posture that restores physical and mental vitality. This can be a great pose to insert in between more challenging positions. To begin this pose:
Bend your knees and place your feet together like a triangle. Make sure you gently lower your body to a restful sitting position on your heels. While keeping your hips and butt firmly on your heels, lower your head down toward your mat. Place your hands forward close to your side. Press your heart against your thighs and breathe gently.
Sukhasana (Easy Pose)
Despite Sukhasna translating to easy, this pose is not always easy for beginners. Think of it more as a pose of ease rather than an easy practice. Sukhasana is a centering pose that is most commonly used for meditation, you may be familiar with the stance without ever actually performing the pose yourself. It is a comfortable pose that is great for beginning your yoga practice. To perform this pose:
Sit in a comfortable position, with your legs crossed (criss-cross, applesauce style). If sitting on your mat is a bit uncomfortable for you, you can use a yoga block or a folded blanket to sit on. Keep your spine straight and place your hands on your knees. Relax your body and breathe deeply.

The Lazy Girl’s 4-Step Guide to Getting Healthy
Step 1: Sleep More to Protect Your Heart
Next time you feel guilty about sleeping in,
just remember you’re doing your heart a favor.
If you can’t get 2 hours of continuous sleep, it means
you’re not completing the restorative sleep cycle over the
course of the night, which can have a harmful effect on
your health. In fact, studies show that people who struggle
to stay asleep had a 30% higher risk of heart attack.
This is because insomnia can lead to excess production
of the hormone cortisol; levels rise depending on the
amount of stress you feel, causing your blood pressure to
rise in turn. Your heart is equipped to handle a normal level
of cortisol, but excess levels at night can lead to arteria
l damage, aneurysm, and eventual heart failure.
Step 2: Order In and Eat Right
Take-out and delivery restaurants can provide the laziest
of us with delicious and healthy meals, so long as you
know what to order. Here are three suggestions, all of
which are under 500 calories, low in carbs, and provide
30 or more grams of protein so you can feel full longer.
Pizza: Chicken and cheese pie.
Be sure to order whole wheat or thin crust, add as many
veggies as you’d like, and ask them to go light on the
cheese to cut back on the fat.
Mexican: Black bean burrito.
It’s important to incorporate plant sources of proteins, like
beans, into your diet.
Order this bean burrito with corn and spinach to add extra
protein, brown rice for extra nutrients, and go light on the
cheese. This option is so healthy, you can even get a side
of guacamole and salsa.
Chinese: Beef and oyster sauce with mixed vegetables
Oyster sauce is a great option in any Asian meal, as it’s the
lowest calorie Asian sauce. Be sure mixed vegetables make
up half the meal.
Step 3: Indulge in Chocolate and Fight Cancer
You may already know that dark chocolate has been
shown to lower blood pressure, decrease cholesterol,
and even improve blood flow to your brain.
Now, a new animal study suggests that eating cocoa,
the raw material in chocolate, may help prevent colon cancer.
Apoptosis is natural process in which your body
eliminates unhealthy cells. Compounds in cocoa
known as flavonoids may assist in the apoptosis
process, destroying cancer cells.
You can get your cocoa in two forms.
One option is to eat no more than 20 grams, or about
one-fifth of a chocolate bar, twice a week.
Be sure it’s dark chocolate that’s 70% cocoa
content or more.
The other option is to take Cocoawell, a supplement that
contains the antioxidant equivalent of 8 bars of
dark chocolate, without any of the sugar, fat or calories.
Step 4: Burn Calorie Without Stepping Foot in a Gym
There are two simple things you can do to burn calories
without going anywhere near a gym.
First: Take a stand!
Next time you’re on the bus, at work, waiting for an appointment,
or folding laundry, try standing up instead of sitting.
You’ll burn an extra 50 calories an hour.
Test 1: Check Your Tongue
Check your tongue in the mirror. If you notice a white,
yellow or orange coating, it could indicate acid reflux, which,
in severe cases, can lead to esophageal cancer.
Normally, a one-way valve at the bottom of your esophagus
makes sure that whatever food or drink goes down doesn't
come back up, but acid reflux occurs when this valve
opens spontaneously and the acids in your stomach flows
up into your throat, causing damage.
To treat acid reflux before it reaches dangerous levels, try
over-the-counter antacids and avoid acidic and spicy foods.
For more on fighting acid reflux, click here.
Test 2: Check Your Nails
If you notice white horizontal stripes on your unpainted
nails,it could indicate kidney disease.
Healthy kidneys filter waste from the blood but leave
vital protein. Impaired kidneys may fail to separate the
protein from the wastes, harming your body.
If the bands on your fingernails are not caused by injury
and are accompanied by fatigue, this could be a sign of
protein deficiency and you should see a doctor for a urine test.
Test 3: Check Your Eyelids
Pull down your lower eyelid and look in the mirror.
If you notice little bumps inside the eyelid that look
like cobblestones, it’s a telltale sign of allergies.
Some of the most common culprits are dust, pet dander,
and mold. To combat allergies, try using a HEPA filter in
your home and keeping your beloved pooches and kitties
out of your bedroom – or, at least, off the bed.
Test 4: Check Your Elbows and Knees
If you spot an itchy or blistery rash on your elbows
or knees, it could mean you have Celiac disease
If so, your body is treating the gluten in wheat and other
grains as an invader and reacting with this inflammation,
which can also appear on your bottom.
The rash affects 10 to 15% of people with Celiac disease.
If you notice it, try giving up gluten for a period of time, then
follow up with your doctor.

The dental insurance companies divide the dental plan into two parts including the dental care services and benefits. If you recently found out that you have developed a diastasis recti, it is common to feel stressed and overwhelmed by all of the information out there. In this article I hope to answer your most pressing questions.
Diastasis recti is not usually a permanent condition and can often be healed through strategic core rehab. It does take time and it will require hard work and dedication on your end, but it is usually possible to close the gap. Your gap may not close all the way. Diastasis recti is still being researched, however, recent studies have shown that the focus for diastasis healing should revolve around restoring core function rather than closing the gap entirely. Meaning that a small diastasis recti can still be considered totally functional.

Identifying The Severity of the Diastasis Recti
To identify the severity of a diastasis recti, you must perform a self-assessment test, or have a physical therapist diagnose you with diastasis recti. Although I would recommend having a professional diagnose you, there is a self-test you can perform at home to help you determine whether or not you may have a diastasis recti.
A self-assessment can be performed as follows:
Lie on your back in a comfortable position. Bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor.
Place one hand on the midline of your core with your fingers pointing straight down on your abs.
If you need support for your head, place your other hand under your head and neck for support. Slowly lift your head and add minimal pressure to your fingers placed on your core. With no diastasis recti, there is the feeling of a toned wall as you lift your head up. If you feel a gap, or your fingers sink into your core, you likely have diastasis recti. In very obvious cases, you can feel the sides of your core muscles in between that gap on the left and right sides.
Repeat the process for the areas just above your belly button and below your belly button to determine whether or not the diastasis recti is isolated or in your core as a whole.
A gap that is only one or two finger widths wide might not be a big concern, unless it is deep – but caution is recommended. However, if you discover that you have a gap ranging from 2.7 cms or larger (2.5 fingers or larger) you should consult a PT or OT.
If a self-test determines that you may have a diastasis recti, make an appointment with a physical therapist to assess you further. They will be exponentially helpful in helping decide what the next steps for you may be and how to begin your healing process.
How to Fix Diastasis Recti
Preventing or healing a DR can be a bit tricky to wrap our head around. A common diastasis recti myth: having a toned, slim abdomen is the primary result of healing. This just isn’t true and many athletes and bodybuilders have diastasis recti. One of the primary focuses in healing your diastasis recti is helping prevent you from making common (but harmful) workout cheats and to correct problematic exercises that end up damaging your abdominals rather than promoting core function. The end result is a functional core through intelligent core rehab.
Due to diastasis recti being more common during and after pregnancy, many methods of avoiding its development involve postural awareness, corrective exercises, and a conscious prehab approach during pregnancy. Yet, there are several things to keep in mind regardless of whether you are male or female, pregnant or not.
Understand a good / healthy / functional core strategy
Practice appropriate breathing patterns
Ensure your abs are free from excess tension
Avoid exercises that increase focalized tension in the abdomen
Practice good posture
Although diastasis recti is not completely avoidable in some cases, the list above helps paint a clear picture on how to protect your core while still staying active. The key is to be mindful of your body’s function and how to increase your functionality and build strength without causing harm to your body.
7 Exercises for DR Recovery
Below is a list of diastasis recti exercises that I have found to help heal and correct a weakened core.
Candles/Core Engagement:
Come to sit tall or stand. Inhale and on the exhale, imagine you are blowing out 100 candles. As you blow, you should feel your core tighten and draw inwards. This can and should be practiced whenever working out and managing a load, a weight, a core move. It automates the core and begins to integrate the function of the core to the activity that you are doing.
Tabletop or Reverse Marching:
Lie down similarly to that of a diastasis test. On each exhale, practice candles. As you exhale, alternate bringing your knee, while still bent, toward your body.
Seated Side Bend:
Sit comfortably. Possibly on a block or some pillows. Hold a yoga strap or belt overhead. Bend your elbows slightly to take the stress off of your neck and shoulders. Exhale, blow candles, tighten your core and side bend right and then exhale to go left. Your core should not bulge, brace or push out as you do these. These are great for upper body mobility, torso length and strength and are a great way to work your core without strain.
Goddess Side Bend:
While standing with wide feet placement (knees aligned with feet), begin candles exhale and bend your knees slowly until they are level with your ankles. Stabilize your body by pressing your heels into the floor. Side bend by raising your arm while maintaining resistance. Repeat side rotations 3x and then return to a standing position.
Goddess Squat Twist:
Repeat steps outlined above but have your arms stacked across your chest. While in the goddess position, twist by using your ribcage and not your arms. Repeat side twists 4x and return to a standing position

Lunge with a Twist and Chop:
Practice lunging. As you bring one leg forward–all while maintaining correct posture–lift your hands, palms crossed, in front of your face. Then slowly begin to twist toward your forward leg. As you twist toward your forward leg, bring your arms across your thigh in a chopping motion.
Opposite Reach:
For this exercise, you will come onto your hands and knees and slowly lift the opposite arm and leg. If that is too hard, do just one at a time. As you lift, you exhale and blow candles, feel your core engage and be extra sure not to bear down, brace or bulge your core! Amazing for your shoulders, arms, core and booty.
Although diastasis recti is not completely avoidable in some cases, the list above helps paint a clear picture on how to protect your core while still staying active. The key is to be mindful of your body’s function and how to increase your functionality and build strength without causing harm to your body.
Surgical Option
In some cases exercise routines and strength building therapy do not accomplish the desired result. When this occurs, surgery is an option for fixing diastasis recti. However, surgery should be the last option you consider.
Diastasis recti surgery is very invasive and it may not be covered by your insurance due to it being considered a cosmetic surgery (abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck”). The recovery process can also take several months to a year depending on the severity of your diastasis recti and the extent of the surgery. That is why I encourage at least a year’s time of rehab before considering surgery.

Dental filling is a restorative dentistry option which many people get at least once in their lifetimes. If you have got your teeth filled a few years ago, you may want to know that there are many other options available now. These may be the options you have been looking for at the time of your dental filling. Now, you can surely look at these options and ask for them at the dentist’s office the next time you get your teeth filled.
Having that said, it would be worth discussing how the dental fillings were, and how they are now.
Mercury fillings
These fillings involve squeezing a mold of metal alloy which is known as dental amalgam. This dental amalgam contains silver as the main element but it also contains mercury in almost equal amount. Having that said, mercury is the proven toxic material which can lead to several health issues. Although mercury in dental amalgam makes up the amount which can be considered insufficient to cause any health concerns, it is now considered as a factor which can lead to initiation of health issues.
Apart from the risks involved in the application of dental amalgam as dental filling, many dentists believe that there is a rare chance of mercury leaking into the general body system. Moreover, these fillings are found to be stronger than any other fillings.
Tooth colored composite
If you are concerned about the color of filling due to dental amalgam, you can ask for the tooth colored composite to be used as dental filling. These dental fillings are white and translucent, and these are apparently not different from natural teeth from the perspective of shape and color.
Another advantage of using these fillings is that you will not have to get your tooth prepared like a socket in order to adjust the filling material. Silica and plastic present in the tooth colored composite filling get hold of the rough texture inside the tooth’s area which needs to be filled.
Other materials used for filling
Gold and other metals are also used for the dental fillings. These shiny fillings are quite stronger and they can last for at least a decade. Apart from these fillings, there are porcelain and ceramic fillings which have the color and surface same as that of natural teeth. However, the ceramic fillings can be a bit abrasive. When you touch your tongue on the ceramic filling, you may feel something capable of distracting you due to abrasion. Typically, gold and porcelain fillings are more expensive as compared to other types of dental fillings.
While you can certainly decide about getting your teeth filled with the material of your choice, it is important to take dentist’s recommendation into consideration.

KINTSUGI
The Restorative Art of Naoko Fukumaru
Kintsugi, (pronounced keen-tsue-ghee), uses powderedgold over lacquer-repaired seams to magnify the beauty that emerges from breakage. This 500-year-old method ofmending damaged ceramics evocatively reminds us of theremarkable human capacity to overcome challenges and adversities. Artist and professional ceramics conservator, Naoko Fukumaru, combines state-of-the-art restoration techniques with traditional kintsugi repair methods to create work that highlights imperfections while exploring new possibilities for this noteworthy craft. Here in the Calvin and Mayho Tanabe Gallery, our kintsugi exhibition features Fukumaru's experimental work, which courageously divergesfrom tradition to express the redemptive potential [really?] born from the act of sensitively reconstructing something that has shattered. For Fukumaru, practicing kintsugi is not merely about repairing damaged physical objects, but finding new nways to celebrate the history, artistry, and symbolism of each piece by choosing to cherish rather than trash what has been broken.
Fusing kintsugi-repaired vessels with unconventional materials like thread, textiles, and surprising plaster forms of mushrooms, succulents, crystals, and animals, Fukumaru conveys a journey from vulnerability to strength. Urushi lacquer is at the heart of much of Fukumaru's work. In addition to helping rejoin the broken fragments, urushi can be layered to develop texture and three-dimensional forms.
It can also be used as a paint, which draws from the maki-e lacquer decorating tradition, where surface designs are meticulously painted with urushi then sprinkled with powdered gold or other precious metals to accentuate the designs. However, instead of the typical maki-e motifs of plants and animals, Fukumaru's urushi decorations are reminiscent of neurons, sparking connections between disparate pieces that she has attentively attached to the restored vessels. Delving into what it means to be beautifully broken, Fukumaru expands the horizon of kintsugi as a powerful art form.
The exhibition continues in the Pavilion Gallery
